My little girl had this happen to her tongue this afternoon whilst she was in childcare. Does anybody know what this is? She screamed for about 2 hours when she got home. Im still waiting for a call back from 111, but she’s sleeping now so will take her to the GP tomorrow.

The only thing i can think of is a burn? It was noticed during tea time. She had been fine all day!

The pictures are the three different stages. Last being how it currently is, Its still peeling now!

I have no experience of scarlett fever, but as an adult (44!) I burnt my mouth. It was sooooo sore. I microwaved a jacket potato a and ate it too fast.
My mouth was soooo sore and painful. I went to the walk in centre who sent me to A and E. Apparently burns in the mouth need to be checked as they can continue to swell.

I had a message to say that it looks like she has thrush. But she was fine up until tea time! Shepherd’s pie for tea which made me question a burn!

It’s possible I suppose, she could have thrush, which may then have made it more likely to have burnt with shepherds pie.
shpehards pie is dodgy for burns anyway. Latent heat of meat bits under vs mash on top. Science stuff. Meat can be burning hot under in middle while potatoes on top is cooler - won’t know till goes into mouth ..land little one wouldn’t necessarily realise to spit out immedately.

whatever. A and E . It could be chemical burn or anything,

bradypuss · 24/02/2025 22:35

This can happen as part of a virus .
Scarlet fever or strep A are examples.

I never think A&E is appropriate on these threads but I'd be there like a shot with this.

Summerbornhelp · 24/02/2025 22:48

Absolutely A&E!! Poor little thing, must be in a lot of pain.

Hope she gets sorted

tinkersfig · 24/02/2025 22:54

It looks a lot like geographic tongue, especially with it sort of "moving" to a larger patch. I have it and when it's kicking off, it can be quite sore.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/02/2025 22:55

Bacterial ulcer? I think it needs A&E. She may end up having trouble drinking if it's very sore.

Her tongue is very white and the redness very red by contrast (and not a typical pink tongue colour) - any sore throat? My son's strawberry tongue began like this when he had scarlet fever. It looks so sore, poor wee thing. I would probably get her checked out by an out of hours GP if that's an option? Good luck!

My DD had exactly this and it was scarlet fever.

MissyPants · 24/02/2025 23:17

Just go to A&E. None of us are medically trained that have commented. You're wasting time on here.

TeaRoseTallulah · 24/02/2025 23:20

A and E ,don't bother with 111.

stayathomegardener · 25/02/2025 09:03
