DF got her removed after years of reccurent sinus infections with no other solutions found. She removed the too 2 and never had a sinus infections ever again. Apparently they are linked.

I had 2 out under local (one upper one lower) a few years ago. It was a "difficult extraction" for the lower one so had to be done at the dental hospital and I was nervous but it was honestly ok. Lots of pressure/tugging but it was over quickly and the recovery was a breeze. Just keep on top of the ibuprofen and ice packs for the first 24 hours or so. I stuck to the guidelines for healing (soft food for a few days, avoiding super hot drinks, doing the salt rinses as advised) and it healed up fine.

FionnulaTheCooler · 18/02/2025 20:51

I had a lower impacted one removed under sedation, the sedation was brilliant, I remember nothing about the procedure. The pain afterwards was minimal, I took the day after it off work as I wasn't allowed to drive for 24 hours after the sedation but was back at work the day after and any twinges were manageable with cocodamol from the chemist. Just remember not to drink anything with a straw or rinse your mouth too vigorously afterwards to avoid dislodging the blood clot.

Had two out under local anaesthetic on the Wednesday and was partying the night away on the Friday! Bit sore but nothing paracetamol couldn’t deal with.

HoppityBun · 18/02/2025 20:58

Yup. 4 removed 30 years ago under a local anaesthetic by the NHS. The dentist wanted to remove them in 2 sessions but I wanted them out in one go and he said he’d try but couldn’t promise.

3 came out easily and he’d saved the difficult one for last. That one was wrestle but I kept still because I wanted it done and dusted. Took around 40 minutes in all, as I recall. Went home and I had a little blood overnight but they healed up fine. No issues.

No way did I want it general anaesthetic and that wasn’t offered, unlike a friend’s son who had it done privately with bells and whistles.

LondonFox · 18/02/2025 22:45

Local NHS dentist, looks like a takeaway from the outside.
I had dificult one as it was growing horizontally into another teeth.
It took around 10min for anaestetics to get it and me to calm down. Getting the tooth out was around 10 seconds max.

Took paracetamol and ibuprofens (as you can mix them) to be fully covered every 4h in swap for the first two days.
Second day I was eating normally.
If you need more done just ask for them on the same side if you need like 3 or 4 taken out as you can still chew on other side.

I've had one out. It had been hurting me for a while chopping into my gum, so it was a relief.

It didn't take too long. I didn't have sedation - just anaesthetic. I can't remember it being at all painful. The anaesthetic injections don't hurt if you haven't had one. If you press a nail into your gum, it'll feel no worse than that.

It was pretty sore for a few days afterwards, so I'd get yourself some co-codamol in from the pharmacy if you're ok to take it. It's not excruciating but you'll feel more comfortable with some good pain relief.

You absolutely won't regret it. Once this is done, you'll never have any bother from that wisdom tooth ever again.

SallySummerPop · 18/02/2025 22:57

I'm the biggest wimp in the world and it was fine. They do a check to make sure the numbing has worked before the get started. I was worried about complications, there were none and It healed really well and quickly (just be careful what you eat first of all). It was a weird sensation having the numbing though. I'm sure you'll be shocked how well it goes! :)

NameChanges123 · 18/02/2025 23:22

Yeah, years ago I had a wisdom tooth out. I'm terrified of the dentist and have a needle phobia but the whole thing was fairly quick and nowhere near as bad as I was expecting (I'm not saying I enjoyed it though 😂).

I did get a dry socket afterwards but sort of blame the lack of direction by the dentist re: eating and drinking afterwards.

But yeah, the procedure wasn't too bad (I've forgotten what it was like so it couldn't have been too awful).

POTC · 18/02/2025 23:23

Two out, under local at the dentist. No issues, don't even remember it!

Futb · 18/02/2025 23:24

I had 4 removed in a oner and was fine! As will you be.

StayAwayFromTheSugar · 18/02/2025 23:28

I'm in my 50s and had one removed end of last year. It was fine and although the dentist told me to use pain relief I barely needed it.
I'm a nervous dental patient so the thought was much worse than the event.
Make sure you follow the post removal instructions so as not to get dry socket.

Cityzen74 · 18/02/2025 23:29

Yes I had one removed a few years ago. I had dreaded it for a long time but actually it was fine. The dental nurse advised me to take paracetamol as soon as I got home so that I would have some pain relief once the local anaesthetic wore off. I did this and it helped. I was in a lot of pain with it prior to removal and it was a relief to have it removed. Sending you all best wishes 🌸

JaneIves · 18/02/2025 23:33

All 4 out under GA 20+ years ago.
I'd had a couple of abscesses on my lower set, the pain alone from them was worth the abstractions.
Still get the odd phantom pains though!

teonaidh · 18/02/2025 23:37

Had a surgical extraction of both lowers as they were badly impacted- was done under local anaesthetic, i wore headphones as the sound of the dentists’ handpiece makes me feel a bit queasy. All over and done in less than an hour and home for some soup!

AuntyMabelandPippin · 19/02/2025 20:49

I had an upper one out last year. The worst bit was the needle with the local anaesthetic in.

The only thing I found strange was how different my mouth felt for ages. I bit the inside of my mouth a few times!

worldwidetravel2017 · 20/02/2025 18:23

Thank you all
It was okay

( drinking colonoscopy prep mix = worse)

Been strictly told to rest for 24 hrs
No walking
No washing up
Nothing that raises my blood pressure etc

Bit nervous of pain when numbing wears off
And wana avoid dry socket

Smooth soup and smooth yogurt 4 bit

Nothing can get ' stuck' there then

Thanks for the update , glad you are ok. The pain won’t come when the local wears off if you make a timetable for your meds and set an alarm on your phone so you don’t forget . I assume you are on paracetamol and ibuprofen so you can stagger them.

Has your dentist told you to keep going with the ibuprofen for the swelling even if you don’t need it for the pain ? Do you have a sheet of paper with your instructions from the dentist? If not, phone them tomorrow and ask them to email it to you.

Very gentle with the salt mouth wash - don’t swish it around your mouth , just tilt your head and let it pool. And DONT spit it out, let it dribble out.

Now go and sit on the sofa / in bed and binge in a box set. With an ice pack on your face ( in a tea towel ) as instructed . Keep going with the ice for the next 24 hours if you can as it makes a HUGE difference to the swelling.

0ctavia · 20/02/2025 18:31

Oh and no drinking out a straw and no alcohol. I’m sure you’ve been told all that.

Huckyfell · 20/02/2025 18:31

It'll soon be over and behind you. I had mine done 15 years ago. Can't remember it anymore.

He didnt tell me to use ice.

I took paracetamol at 530pm

Ibroprofen at 6pm

Will take more pain relief at 1030pm

Gave me a sheet that firmly says no rinsing out mouth for 24 hrs.

As it was a late afternoon appt -
Think il start saline solution when its been 24 hours ..

Cuz it says ' on day after treatment

( doesn't really allow for if treatment was am or pm

Dentist told me to make sure i took pain relief in the 2 hrs after

Just to warn you (because no one had told me it was a possibility) a few days after removal, my gum expelled a bit of bone that had been stuck between the roots of the tooth. I felt something hard and sharp in the gum and a few hours later it had sort of pushed itself out. Was very weird but not painful.
