...and is there a lot of faffing about with creams

and is it likely to cause allergies etc

It's pretty ok once you get used to it! I found I got cystitis quite a lot - well, more often than I may have got otherwise. The cream numbs your mouth . I tasted it to see what it was like.

oxocube · 08/05/2008 18:14

I did years ago and got pregnant so wouldn't really recommend A bit of a faff at first, never really liked it but you can put it in quite a while before having sex which can be an advantage. Agree with other poster re cystitis

weebleswobble · 08/05/2008 18:15

Bladebla what were you thinking?? Hmm...this looks yummy??

weebleswobble · 08/05/2008 18:16

zippi - No need to taste the cream! Other than that I wouldn't have a clue...sorry.

MrsTittleMouse · 08/05/2008 18:22

I had one and I liked it. I didn't get any kind of infection (cystitis/thrush etc.) from it, and I found it really handy to be able to insert it and forget it. I hated the pill and we were getting a bit careless with condoms in the heat of the moment.

I would be using one now, if we hadn't found out that we were severely infertile.

zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 18:27

there is a minimal chance of me getting pregnant but it has been suggested i should use something

all the options sound tedious

i never get cystitius normally i dont partiicualrly want to start tho

lol at cream numbing mouth

wont be a problem for me as im not that flexible

i guess it could be a problem for him tho

Blandmum · 08/05/2008 18:35

I used one for quite a while and it was great

Good for spacing a family or to use it when your natural fertility is on the wane.

I am prone to cystitis, but never had any probs with the diaphragm. Put the cream on, squeeze the side together (the diaphragms not your!) , squat, wang it up your flaps, check its in the right place.

Shag within 4 hours (iirc)

zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 18:37

like shag within four hours have visions of going on a manhunt

well i might give it a whirl

i am not at all fussed on the coil and it seems a bit ott as well as too many downsides

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 18:38

i am ridiculously obsessed with this topic

12 months time i shall be on the having a baby one again

OP posts:
Blandmum · 08/05/2008 18:43

It isn't the contraceptive of choice for many if they are young and in the peak of fertility.

TBH if getting pg would be an utter nightmare for you, then the mirena coil is probably the way to go.

But if you feel that the probs of that are too much then the diaphragm is a good alternative to consider

zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 18:47

well it would be bloody ironic

bf might be slightly concerned i have no idea if he wants kids and if/when he does it would be unlikely to be mine/now

OP posts:
Blandmum · 08/05/2008 18:50

I thought the diaphragm was a good method for me, when I used it. I liked the feeling of control that it gave me, I'd used the pill but I'd had enough. Once I'd had the kids I had my tubes tied, so it isn't really an issue for me.

Lots of women never consider the diaphragm, but for the right women it can be a good choice

MrsTittleMouse · 08/05/2008 19:04

I found that it became a habit. Eat dinner, insert diaphragm, watch a bit of telly, go to bed. Whether we needed the diaphragm or not, I took it out in the morning and washed it as soon as I got up.
Mind you, this was pre-children so there was rather more call for it than there would be now. I wonder whether I would be a bit disappointed at how often it wasn't "used", if you see what I mean.

zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 19:12

well it might be a bit disappointing not using it lol

OP posts:
Blandmum · 08/05/2008 19:13

It is rather like taking you harp to the party and no one asks you to play!

MrsTittleMouse · 08/05/2008 19:15

Mind you, maybe I could do with a bit of "encouragement" nowadays, what with the pregnancy hormones and the scar issues.

morningpaper · 08/05/2008 19:21

Can you definitely get one? The are phasing them out

MrsTittleMouse · 08/05/2008 19:24

I got mine a few years ago. Although the doctor did ask if he could invite the student in - I suppose it was something "unusual" for her to see. I hope they don't phase them out, it's a safe and easy method, and the more options, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

theheadgirl · 08/05/2008 19:39

I like mine. But like mrs TM, the nurse got a student into check positioning, cos its not used that often these days! But fine to insert, no problems in use and I like the idea of something non hormonal, that I'm in control of.

zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 22:52

oh i have no idea

dont they have granny contraceptives then

OP posts:
stuffitall · 08/05/2008 22:56

it ca be a bit messy but i am v rubbish at contraception and think it's great

i am thinking of giong back to it as i cannot force my husband onto the operating table

expatkat · 08/05/2008 23:03

I've been happy with the diaphram, but ironically am 2 weeks into a urinary tract infection that seems to be resistant to antibiotics. I didn't realize there was a connection between diaphrams/cystitis/thrush. I get both recurrently--but I did BEFORE the diaphram too, so I can't jump to the conclusion that it's cause and effect (for me).

zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 23:09

im not sure if that means i might get cystitus etc or not

my mum used to get it but she was diabetic

idont have any sex urinary problems now and tbh i have enopugh other problems

i do just revert to thinkin g that i just wouldnt nget pregnant if i did nothing

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 08/05/2008 23:12

I used one.

I liked it!

DH is going for the snip after this one, though, so will be ditching the contraception once the snip works.

zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 23:19

i just think it would be handy to wake up now and be 30
