Hot baby, what to do??

Sounds like an exciting steamy thread title doesn't it??
But it isn't
DD is poorly ... I took her to the docs this morning as her temp was up and she has been off her food and grizzly for a couple of days.
No infections anywhere (according to the doctor) and he says it is viral. So throughout the day she has got hotter and hotter. 39.4 at 5pm. I have given her paracetamol and she is asleep in her cot and is still burning up (39.3 ... I have one of those ear thermometers). It is 9.56pm here now.
To be honest this is the first time she has had a high temp (she is 11 months) apart from a virus at 8 weeks and we were in hospital with it and I have forgotten what to do
Should I wake her for some paracetamol at midnight (she had her last lot at 6pm)?
She is in a light short sleeved, short legged all in one vest with a grobag ... should I take her out of the grobag? It is summer here now but it isn't a heatwave or anything ... but warm.
DH says she should be out of the grobag but if she is free of that she gets caught in the cot bars ... and I am worried about her getting cold in the night.
Should I call the doctor as 39.3 seems very warm????????
Ta

Poor you, ghosty and poor dd.

hope she gets better soon

marj · 14/01/2005 21:04

Hi ghosty. I am marj and i am new to mumsnet. sorry to hear of your miserable time lately. my ds had it a while ago and i got to the point where i was running out of clothes due to being up to my neck in either puke or poo. hope she gets much better soon. it took about five days for my ds to get back to normal. Rubbish doctor sending you home and not doing anything. if you had come to the hospital i work in we would never do that. dehydration in little ones can be really serious. anyway, good luck and hope you have a bit of sleep tonight.

marj · 14/01/2005 21:06

by the way, give your dh a good talking to when he gets home. selfish pig.

ghosty · 14/01/2005 21:07

Thanks everyone ... it helps knowing you lot are there for me
It is daytime now (10am) in NZ so I can pop down to a and e at anytime (except I have to pay $20 every visit at weekends but that doesn't matter .... )
DH is a git ... I love him but he is a git.

Hope dd is better soon and that you get some rest. Sorry your dh has gone and left you to it.

piffle · 14/01/2005 21:23

Ghosty babe, cannot believe I have missed this thread.
Have been through this too before.
It is soo soo stressful and you worry so much and men are SHITE at that point, ask them to fetch carry but nothing else.
I think he really deserves the cold shoulder about this uponst his return, I really hope DD is feeling better now. It is so hard when they are unable to tell you what is wrong or how they feel.
The docs usually say if she is drinking and weeing then try not to worry. I know how hard it is though,DD had vomiting bug that lasted a month, we were going nuts but the docs treated us like we were paranoid freaks...
Love to Ghosty and dd Get Well Soon

piffle · 14/01/2005 21:24

OMFG they now charge for babies at A+E in NZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????

highlander · 14/01/2005 21:54

big hugs ghosty; hope your DD is better soon.

I remember when I first found this site you had just had your DD and posted on how you were BF on the Auckland museum steps!

BTW, big boot up the arse for your DH

ghosty · 14/01/2005 22:54

Piff, it's true ...
They wouldn't charge if I took her to the proper hospital but they have these 24 hour A&E clinics all over the place and you have to pay, even for babies
My lovely friend has just taken DS swimming ... she is so lovely, a surrogate auntie/grandma (her boys are all grown up now) ...
DD seems a bit perkier but is still grumpy and her temp is still up (37.8) but getting lower thank god. She looks awful still though.
She has had a 100ml bottle mixed with P and so far no vomit or diarrhoea (how DO you spell that word???????) ... so I think we may be slowly on the up ...

I hope the wee one is geting better, Ghosty - it's so horrible when they are very poorly, it's in your mind all the time and just impossible to do anything else. Best wishes for a quiet night for you all.

hazlinh · 15/01/2005 07:07

ooh ghosty...hugs....hope you and the little one are doing ok....
am having kind of the same thing here with my 11 mth old dd. she's been having a slight temperature since tuesday but nothing too serious until thurs and fri when she suddenly hit 39 degrees celsius and started vomiting everywhere.
luckily after some suppositories, her temp is ok now, but her fever always gets worse during the night and she just cant sleep and cries and cries and cries.on friday, i had a fright cos she started going all limp and quiet, totally unlike her normal monkey-ish self. and bloody dh seems to think it's no cause for concern.
(^)&*$%

i totally understand what you're going through cos dh has a cycling trip tomorrow which he's still going for. and i'm working this weekend. he says his mother can babysit. over my dead 6%#%#*&^

let us know how you and your dd get on/
grrrrrr

ghosty · 15/01/2005 11:05

Dear hazlinh ...
Almost identical situation isn't it? Poor you and DD ... my sympathies {{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}} I hope she feels better soon.
I am happy to report that DD seems to be on the up ... she has had a few disgusting nappies today but thankfully no more vomiting.
She has managed quite a lot of the rehydration fluid mixed with a little bit of milk (I can't get her to take it alone or with water), her temp has been only slightly above normal and she managed to have a good play this evening with me and DS before she went to bed (rather than constantly whingeing and wanting cuddles).
My friend took DS out swimming, then to lunch and then to the museum so I managed to have a half hour kip at lunchtime with DD on my bed ...
bliss ...
DH back at lunchtime tomorrow so I will be decidedly frosty I think ....

ScummyMummy · 15/01/2005 16:17

Frosty reception is the least he deserves; hope he will be full of remorse and you'll be able to make up soon, tho. Glad dd is on the mend.

ScummyMummy · 15/01/2005 16:18

hope your dd feels better soon too, hazlinh.

Twiglett · 15/01/2005 16:25

Ghosty .. just caught up with this .. poor you .. how frustrating and upsetting .. so glad she's on the mend now though

virtual slap for DH though

hugs and stuff

ghosty · 15/01/2005 20:45

DD had a pretty awful night ... awake from 10pm till 2am ... am shattered.
Her temp is normal but she has conjunctivitis in both eyes now and she seems to have a headache, keeps clutching her head and crying.
I guess it is back to the doctor today then
DH is coming home at lunchtime ...............
Gosh, it is getting chillier and chillier in here

OP posts:
TracyK · 15/01/2005 21:04

poor you - are you still bf - put some milk in her eyes??
Soon as dh walks in - hand dd over to him and go and put your head down for an hour!

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 15/01/2005 22:51

Ghosty, might you even 'forget' you'd changed the locks? ! Oh I hope she is better soon, poor love, please let us know won't you?

ghosty · 16/01/2005 07:13

LOL WWW ...
Another boring update for you ...
DD still an unhappy bunny today ... temp is normal but she is very very clingy, very tired, absolutely refuses any food apart from milk and today she developed a nasty itchy rash all over her tummy, back, behind her ears and all over her head.
I took her back to the 24 hour doctor today and he told me it was an allergic reaction. "To what? She hasn't eaten anything in a week!!" I said, but he was adamant and prescribed an antihistimine, calamine lotion and some awful stuff that goes in the bath (pinetar????)
She has conjunctivitis in both eyes ...
She's a wreck. I have had to put her modelling career on hold .
I am beginning to wonder if she will ever eat again
Ho hum ... Monday tomorrow and another day of DS climbing the walls in frustration.
DH came home and I have been pretty cool with him. I told him I thought he was a selfish pig and that the fact that I can't be arsed to have a go at him means that I really don't care what he does and he should be worried about that.
He said, "I know I have been selfish, but it is done now!"
My only consolation is that he has awful sunburn on his face, arms and legs ..... he is a redhead so is very sensitive to the sun ... am I sympathetic??? B*gger that!!!

OP posts:
Twiglett · 16/01/2005 10:37

aha lobster revenge .. excellent

Ghosty .. it will end honest it will .. poor wee mite is just run down so probably catching anything and everything (even if it isn't an allergy the anti-H will stop the itching)

hope she's better soon

ScummyMummy · 16/01/2005 10:40

She'll turn a corner soon, ghosty, I'm sure. We've all four got raging flu here so I really sympathise. Seems never ending, doesn't it?

V. pleased to hear about dh's sunburn

ghosty · 17/01/2005 08:59

LOL at 'Lobster revenge'
Just wanted to say thanks for all the support on this folks, it was so helpful
Update on DD ... she is still poorly ... won't eat a thing, will only drink little bits of milk ... I am offering her bottle every 2hours at the moment ... like having a blinking newborn in the house!!
I am a bit worried still as she has very dry nappies (between the runny poos .... ) This morning she got up with a dry nappy after 12 hours .... I phoned the nurse and she just said to keep up the fluids and the pedialyte (which DD now totally refuses .... ) so milk it is then.
She is slightly better within herself though, seems to be getting her sense of humour back but is still very clingy and whingey.
Fed up with this now ....

OP posts:
hazlinh · 18/01/2005 03:09

oh dear, sorry to hear it ghosty...am V. Pleased with the lobster revenge tho!!!

hang in there..so the nurse didn't say she was dehydrated or something?

my dd's slightly better now, fever's gone but she's still not sleeping well...a lot of crying, fussing and thrashing about...doctor said it was probably just due to teething....but it really seems much worse!!

i got my own revenge too! he lost his wallet, money, cards etc during the trip!!!
(must have an evil face emoticon, really)
