Hot baby, what to do??

Sounds like an exciting steamy thread title doesn't it??
But it isn't
DD is poorly ... I took her to the docs this morning as her temp was up and she has been off her food and grizzly for a couple of days.
No infections anywhere (according to the doctor) and he says it is viral. So throughout the day she has got hotter and hotter. 39.4 at 5pm. I have given her paracetamol and she is asleep in her cot and is still burning up (39.3 ... I have one of those ear thermometers). It is 9.56pm here now.
To be honest this is the first time she has had a high temp (she is 11 months) apart from a virus at 8 weeks and we were in hospital with it and I have forgotten what to do
Should I wake her for some paracetamol at midnight (she had her last lot at 6pm)?
She is in a light short sleeved, short legged all in one vest with a grobag ... should I take her out of the grobag? It is summer here now but it isn't a heatwave or anything ... but warm.
DH says she should be out of the grobag but if she is free of that she gets caught in the cot bars ... and I am worried about her getting cold in the night.
Should I call the doctor as 39.3 seems very warm????????
Ta

Thanks Ghosty...it was probably the longest 10 days of my life!!!

sanchpanch · 13/01/2005 21:26

I am glad things are better for you, would definetely give the ibrufen and calpol together as that should work a treat,
I would avoid the sponging down, it is the first thing you think to do but it isnt normally a good idea, because it will cool the outside of the body down, the body will then shiver cause it feels slightly cold, like we all shiver when cool, or get goose bumps, to heat body up, this will then bring temperature up even more,

ghosty · 14/01/2005 04:14

Well, now we are having a shocker ...
I took DD to the doctor again today because she started having diarrhoea (sp???) despite not eating for the last few days and just having milk.
He was pretty worried as he said she is pretty dehydrated (sunken fontonelle, sunken eyes etc). He almost sent us to hospital but has given us Pedialyte (like dioralyte) to try and get fluids into her.
The only problem is that she WON'T take it. We have tried everything, bottles, cups, mixed with water, juice, with a syringe, from a spoon but she just screams and screams and won't take it.
Aaaaaaaaaaagggggggghhhhhh!!!
We have to go back to the doctor tomorrow morning .....
She is still hot.
He thinks she has either got a tummy bug or a 'super bug' whatever that is.
They put a wee bag on her to see if we can catch some urine but that one came off in her nappy so I have put another one on to see if I can catch some ... thing is she isn't weeing ....
The worst thing is that early tomorrow, DH is going camping for the weekend ... doesn't seem to be planning to cancel it ... so I will have yet another two days with DS climbing the walls because we can't go out.
I know that there are people worse off than me and all that but I am having a crap week.
Sorry for whingeing ...

get her to hospital now - dehydration in babies is very serious. It's not going to get better if she's not taking the rehydration fluid

eldestgirl · 14/01/2005 06:07

I agree. She might need to be put on a drip. And make DH cancel his weekend! You need the physical and moral support. If she does get admitted, DH will need to look after DS.

ghosty · 14/01/2005 06:28

I know, I know ...
She has just had half a bottle of milk with the pedialyte in it (about 50mls) ... that was the only way we could get her to take it.
Her temp is down again now, not normal but not as high and she is asleep.
When she wakes I will give her another bottle with more pedialyte.
I have lost my patience with DH, most of the time he is fantastic but he can be really selfish at times ... at all the wrong times.
Shit.

OP posts:
weightwatchingwaterwitch · 14/01/2005 06:38

Oh no Ghosty! He has got to cancel it, he really has, there's no WAY he should go, but you know that. I really hope she picks up today.

ghosty · 14/01/2005 06:51

Thanks WWW ...
I know he should cancel it. But he is just getting on with his packing etc. I said to him, "Have you considered cancelling the trip if DD gets worse in the night?" And he said, "I have, but it is a bit late to back out now!"
I didn't pursue it because a) I was speechless at that response and b) DS was in the room but when he goes to bed we will talk about it.
I don't want to say, "I want you to cancel your trip" I want him to say, "Don't worry darling, I will cancel my trip!"
He just doesn't see how serious this could potentially be ... he thinks she is fine because she was playing nicely just before she went to bed. He hasn't sat here all day trying to get her to take a drop of water and having her wailing on his knee all day.

Thinking of you Ghosty. Please do go to hospital if she won't let you rehydrate her. Is dh still going?

nailpolish · 14/01/2005 07:52

oh no ghosty, and i thought things were looking up too

are you taking her to the hospital? i hope your dh sees sense soon

mishi1977 · 14/01/2005 08:26

aww ghosty hun your dh needs to cancel even if she is a bit better the last few days will have physically taken their toll on you.....hope she is a little better today
take care
mishi

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 14/01/2005 08:52

Ghosty, ikwym about wanting him to want to cancel. Sometimes imo though you need to say 'I want you to cancel' otherwise you can lay yourself open to accusations of 'you didn't tell me that was what you wanted

ghosty · 14/01/2005 08:55

No, he is, at this point still going
She took another 50mls of milk mixed with the pedialyte at about 8pm ... but she then had a very nasty nappy ...
I have taken a sample of the poo (as per the doctor's instructions) and will take it in first thing in the morning when I take her to the doctor.
I will try and get some more milk down her tonight if I can.
Boy, am I knackered ......................????

OP posts:
weightwatchingwaterwitch · 14/01/2005 09:07

Ghosty, sorry to hear that. fwiw, I'd be furious but that doesn't help you much. I just hope she improves and you get some sleep.

ghosty · 14/01/2005 09:18

You know, the reason I am not furious is that I am sick and tired of being the naggy "'er indoors" wife ...
I just can't be bothered anymore.

I will just get through tomorrow as best I can and if we end up in hospital then he will have to turn back and come home.

Thanks Batters ....
We just got her up (it is 11pm) here and she managed to have 2oz of milk mixed with pedialyte. She's still hot (38.4) and I think I will camp down in her room tonight.
Will report back in the morning.
It is good to talk.

Hope she feels loads better soon, ghosty. Lots of love to you.

(and a virtual slap for your dh.)

westmidsclaire · 14/01/2005 18:42

been through the same thing with both my children now 9 and 6 having febral convulsions (fits due to temperature) i am very aware of the slightest temperature rise and have them stripped off and the room cold within seconds

I would agree with the message saying if you cant dehydrate the child then would go to hospital, if the doctors arent available.

ghosty · 14/01/2005 20:38

Well, we had an awful night.
I camped out in DD's room and when she woke at 4am I gave her a bottle of milk mixed with pedialyte which she promptly threw up
She slept with me from then till 7am ... then had 50 mls of milk and P mixed and 20 minutes later filled her nappy with yuk
Temp was normal at 7am but up again by 8.30 so I took her to the accident and emergency clinic where the doctor said to keep up the fluids and that was all we could do and sent us home again.
DH went off on his trip. He is going kayaking and right now I hope he drowns (... well, obviously not really but YKWIM??)
I am shattered.

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 14/01/2005 20:56

Oh Ghosty, I so hoped I'd open this and find you saying she was better and all was well. Poor you and poor her. At least you got some dioralyte stuff down her. I cannot imagine your dh's justification for buggering off canoeing, but here's an face on your behalf.

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 14/01/2005 20:57

But it's daytime there now right so you could go to a and e again if she gets any worse?

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 14/01/2005 20:57

But really hope you won't have to of course and that it's all going in the right direction from now on.
