Just noticed a slight lump on the front of my neck

It’s about the size of an adult finger print and just to the right of the centre of my neck about two thirds of the way down.

Not sure whether I should get it checked or whether I will look ridiculous. It’s only very slightly raised and not painful or anything.

should I just watch and wait to see what it does ie whether it goes down or gets bigger?

How's your thyroid?

user6372812 · 01/02/2025 23:05

Erm, not sure how I would know?

Personally I'd get it checked, wait and watch approach is all very well but you'll be nervous and it's better to get yourself reassured sooner.

A GP wont mind putting your mind at rest or running some bloods for you.

comedycentral · 01/02/2025 23:06

You might have had previous tests, it sounds like you haven't. It might be worth contacting your GP for a consultation.

user6372812 · 01/02/2025 23:10

No, no previous issues or tests. I have had a really dry feeling throat for the past few weeks. Not sore or anything, it just feels very dry. Might be completely unrelated of course

I think the only way to get to the bottom of it is to book a GP appointment. 🙂

user6372812 · 01/02/2025 23:27

Thanks both. I think maybe I should

Definitely get a drs appointment it could be thyroid related. Don't wait.

Oftenaddled · 01/02/2025 23:27

Definitely get it checked. Thyroid cancer is extremely treatable and that's a possibility here. Nothing to panic about but should be addressed as quickly as possible.

CagneyNYPD1 · 01/02/2025 23:38

Definitely worth getting that checked out. FWIW I found a lump where, if I was a man, my Adam's Apple would be. Could feel it when swallowing too. Turned out to be a lump in my thyroid. Had it whipped out because it was pressing my windpipe. Nothing serious. No meds needed etc. All fine.

Lumps in neck/throat s very common but should be checked out.

BertieBotts · 01/02/2025 23:42

It could be a swollen gland if you have a bit of a sore throat (a usual sign of a cold for me). But no harm in getting it checked out just in case.

NHS page about swollen glands say to see GP if it hasn't gone within a week, or if it's hard and doesn't move when you poke it.

Swollen glands

Read about swollen lymph glands, which are usually a sign of infection. Find out what the symptoms are, how to ease them and when to get medical help.

Sounds like a goiter, definitely worth getting your thyroid checked

user6372812 · 01/02/2025 23:55

I don’t have a sore throat at all. It just feels sort of dry at the very bottom of the throat. A bit like my neck is being pressed upon at the bottom.

Any lumps on the neck should be checked by doctor

GG1986 · 02/02/2025 14:48

It could be your thyroid gland has become inflamed, this happened to me and it was hashimotos disease/underactive thyroid, I'm on levothyroxine now. Definitely see your Dr and they will probably run some blood tests and possibly a referral to ENT to get it looked at.

Absolutely this.
Figure out now now to make an appointment, then get on to it tomorrow morning.

Doors247 · 02/02/2025 21:08

I've got thyroid nodules, I was seen on the 2 week pathway.
I was seen within a week by ENT who put a camera down my nose (really wasn't that bad at all) To check that it wasn't blocking anything.
I then had an xray a few days later,
it was nothing to worry about, most are completely harmless but need getting checked.

user6372812 · 03/02/2025 17:48

Just to update. I saw the GP first thing this morning. I'm having blood tests tomorrow at the hospital and am on the 2 week pathway waiting for an ultrasound

It's good they are being so thorough for you, how are you feeling?

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/02/2025 18:06

Glad it's being checked, best wishes

My mum had similar and had a partial thyroidectomy. It was non-cancerous, but grew quite large.

user6372812 · 03/02/2025 18:48

the doctor was lovely, she said she was pretty sure it was nothing to be concerned about but wanted to refer it to a partner who was more experienced. He wanted to refer it to the hospital.

I feel fine thanks. A little concerned of course but the doctor was very reassuring.

TheSpottedZebra · 03/02/2025 20:01

I'm glad you went too. And thank you for updating!

Hope you get a very speedy referral, and of course hope it's all nothing to worry about.

user6372812 · 12/02/2025 14:02

Update is that bloods are fine (which sounds good but is apparently not) so next step is ultrasound..

OP posts:
comedycentral · 12/02/2025 21:33

I'm glad the doctor was reassuring and you've been referred for more tests to get to the bottom of it.
