Does anyone know under what circumstances the ambulance service phone your GP the next day as they have concerns about someone’s health? It’s worrying me

It’s was a phone call about me not someone else

I used to work for the ambulance service, a clinician on the 111 line.
A GP would be contacted if there was a genuine danger to life, your own, or people with you, otherwise it would be social services, if children were involved.
Patient confidentiality would prevent any other sharing of medical information.

CheckedSquare · 31/01/2025 20:08

Thank you, that helps. It was because of very high blood pressure, bordering on emergency high, but it was decided not to do anything as it came down. So could they have phoned so GP is aware quicker?

They would have advised you to contact your GP. They don't have time to make follow up calls on behalf of people, unless it's something life threatening or likely to cause harm to yourself or others.

FlouncyMcFlouncers · 31/01/2025 20:16

We had the ambulance service out last year. Didn’t need to go into hospital but a report was sent to the GP for follow up.

same with 111. Used them recently out of hours and a report was sent to GP.

That’s why I’m worried as they did phone my GP, I just wanted to know the circumstances of when they would/why they would as I didn’t expect it. I can contact my GP which is why I thought it odd & it worried me

Do you live alone? That would put you at greater risk of your blood pressure is unmanaged and gets that high, so they might've thought you need an urgent GP appointment

Thank you. Yeah I know they do that, it was a phone call though, which is what worried me. My health has gone crazy because of a reaction to a medication

My GP has always had a follow up after any A&E trips, call outs with kids/me/ex. Don't understand why you would be concerned about this?

rainythursdayontheavenue · 31/01/2025 20:32

I had to call an ambulance for DH when he was waiting for cardiac surgery for AF. His heart rate was 160bpm but he passed out cold on the floor and his BP was barely registering on the machine, luckily I rang our DD and she was able to rush down the road and take it manually (she's a midwife). The paramedics were brilliant, and here for nearly 2 hours to check he was stable again. They sent a report in and his GP surgery phoned him the next day for him to go in.

Thank you. Yeah maybe, I guess maybe they just thought they needed to let them know.

That must have been so scary, is he ok now? It’s that the ambulance service have phoned GP not GP phoned me. I think I’m probably not going to work it out on a forum. I’ll have to ask doctors surgery.

Thank you everyone. I’m not going to know unless I ask the GP. Doesn’t make sense to me tbh. But thank you for all your replies I appreciate it

Yes thanks, he had his surgery post lockdown at a regional specialist centre, and he only now gets the odd issue if he's really stressed/unwell.

mashingwachine · 31/01/2025 20:43

How do you know they have phoned your GP?

I’m glad things are better now. Must be hard to manage.

Wouldn't they have just called your GP surgery to make them aware quickly, so the GP can have you in for an appointment to discuss what's happened/ the plan moving forward if this has been caused by medication? I would see it as helpful.

Because I was told

I understand that, but by who?

AnotherVice · 31/01/2025 20:47

OP, the crew won't have contacted the GP without your knowledge or consent. They would possibly have asked if they could send a 'GP summary' (like an email) to your surgery for them to follow you up.

RuthW · 31/01/2025 20:48

We never get calls from ambulance staff unless they are with the patient.

We are notified by email after each call.

Yeah that’s what I think. Going to try to not worry
