contraception and lutenising hormone ...........................can someone help explain hormones and menopause and babies to me

zippitippitoes · 07/05/2008 12:48

...........ok i went and got the results of my blood test and i have raised level of one hormone and normal levels of lutneising hormone

but i am 51 this month

so the gp has suggested i have a mirena coil

i asked her if it is necessary at my age and she said yes you could get pregnant

i had a thread before about the risks

does anyone know about hormones

Can't help you with the hormones I'm afraid but I always thought that while you continue to have periods (even irregularly) that it is possible to gt pregnant.

But if you have had no periods for a whole year then you are deemed menopausal and therefore no longer fertile.

(or is that a myth??)

zippitippitoes · 07/05/2008 12:56

i think that is the case

it just seems a hassle at the moment

OP posts:
solo · 07/05/2008 12:57

Is it worth the risk of pregnancy though, not to be cautious?

Rosylily · 07/05/2008 13:15

What about an ordinary coil with no hormones? Bit less heavy duty contraception?

zippitippitoes · 07/05/2008 13:16

apparently because i have extremely heavy periods that wouldnt be suitable

OP posts:
Rosylily · 07/05/2008 13:53

hmm, well the mirena would help the heavy period thing I suppose. If I were you I would use the old condoms and wait /hope for things to settle down, but lots of people find the mirena coil no bother.

Blandmum · 07/05/2008 14:01

OK, a hormone is a chemical messenger that is made in one part of the body and acts in another part of the body.

The hormones are showing that you still have some eggs left that can develop, and theoretically you can get PG.

The mirena pill is low risk, because only progesterone is used (and most of the combined pills side effects are caused by the oestrogens) and because it is used locally, a much lower dose of hormone can be used than in the Mini pill

This type of coil would help with your heavy periods, whereas an ordinary copper coil tends to make the bleeding worse.

Does that help at all, and do you have any more question?

zippitippitoes · 07/05/2008 17:03

but isnt the chance of getting pregnant somewhere like 1 in several hundred or something or even less probably

if i have normal luteinising hormone levels then is that usual at this age or unusual..or what perdcentage of women have normal levels at 50/1

OP posts:
Blandmum · 07/05/2008 18:48

But that figure will be for all women of your age. Not the young, sprightly ones, like you, who have a normal LH level

have you thought about a diaphragm if you don't want a coil?

zippitippitoes · 07/05/2008 19:02

lol at young and sprightly

i am going to have to go into serious training for my summer hols..if im going to keep up..i think mountains are on the horizon and camping

i dont really know anything about diaphragm

does it have to be made to measure and do you put it in ages beforehand..i expect i would be useless at inserting it

we are supposed to getting more spontaneous

that was part of the popint of doing away with condoms

OP posts:
Blandmum · 07/05/2008 19:24

You do need it fitted, but you can wang it up your flaps ages before you do the dance of lurve, so it is a lot less obvious than using a condom

zippitippitoes · 07/05/2008 20:58

can you feel it is it dificult to insert and do you need creams and stuff

and do you have to take it out after or can you leave it in in case

OP posts:
Blandmum · 07/05/2008 21:32

You can't take it out immediatyly, I can't remember how long you have to leave it in situe.

You can put it in 'just in case. You do need creams

probablyaslytherin · 07/05/2008 22:22

zippi, why not give the mirena a go? It was great for my heavy afs and I had no probs with it at all. I also got to leave it in an extra year just to tide me over till I was post menopausal.

You don't know how long it will be before you are one year beyond afs - you could be 55 - I was.

emma1977 · 07/05/2008 22:55

I'm guessing that the 'other hormone' you mention is probably Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), which tends to be raised after the menopause.

As it is possible to still ovulate sporadically (and conceive) for up to a year after the menopause, it is generally advised that women should continue using contraception for a year.

As well as helping with heavy periods and providing contraception, mirena also counts as the progesterone component of HRT should you ever wish to use it.

solo · 07/05/2008 23:25

I've had the Mirena for 13 months now and Since November last year, I've only had about 5 weeks with no bleeding at all...just finished a two week, full bleed period. I'm not sure if it could be because I'm still bf ing, but it's driven me crazy. I've also started to gain weight in recent times and I've been a demon for a year, though I'd not considered it might be anything to do with the coil until I read here about mood swings. A few other side effects too...
On the other hand, I know many other women who've been using it for many years and swear by it. No side effects or periods full stop!

zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 10:50

im not sure what the other hormone the gp was just the other side of useless...as in worse than

i found her grasp of mental health negligible so cant say i trust her at all

she said perimenopausal

i have read tyhe leaflet for this coil and i cant say it holds any attractions

id rather have a baby

if someone could give me a statistical possibility like 1 in 1000 chance then that sounds acceptable to me

1 in 200 sounds acceptable

i dont like at all the sound of bleeding or mood swings heaven help me i have enough of those i shal go mad

or perforations

or infections

im not at all sure i want to fuck up my hormones or put on weight

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 10:53

perhaps i should ask him if he wants to take the risk

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 08/05/2008 11:27

i found this reference it just seems that the risk of pregnancy is tiny

i am thinking the risk of messing things up using the mirena are much greater

"Giving birth after age 50 is not common. Of the roughly 12 million births in the U.S. between 1997 and 1999, only about 500 involved women who were 50 or older.

The vast majority of these births involved donor eggs from younger women, a practice that has made childbirth among menopausal women possible."
