Upset stomach

Yesterday I had the most horrendous diarrhea. I managed to get to the pharmacy to get some Imodium to stop the diarrhoea and it did stop.

However I still feel unwell today so I've got some dioralyte to replace lost salts. The pharmacist said once I start taking this I should feel better but I don't know how often I should take it because the instructions say take it after every bowel movement but I'm no longer having bowel movements but I just feel absolutely drained and exhausted.

I’ve had food poisoning with the most awful diarrhoea which lasted all day, once I stopped I did take an Imodium tablet but I felt worse than I did before, so presume my body hadn’t quite got rid of everything. I was really sore for a couple of days, I find drinking flat coke helps.

PerkyOchrePeer · 22/01/2025 17:36

My question was about the stuff I bought to replace salts and they do say you should not drink carbonated drinks if we've got something like this

You won’t be having diarrhoea if you’ve taken Imodium but you shouldn’t be taking it really, especially not knowing the cause.

you have diarrhoea because there’s something your body wants out of it. Virus, bacteria, parasite. Imodium just makes it last longer.

CountingDownToSummer · 22/01/2025 18:57

My DS was hospitalised and his consultant said the best thing to drink after having an upset stomach was flat coke so I agree with @Mindymomo

Then why did the pharmacist tell me to take Imodium.

When you have got runny watery diarrhea every 10 minutes you will want to take something to get rid of it and I was so grateful when it stopped

Coke doesn't contain enough sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes to replace what you've lost through diarrhea.

OP posts:
PerkyOchrePeer · 22/01/2025 19:39

Drinking flat Coke after having diarrhea is not recommended because it doesn't provide enough fluids or electrolytes. Instead, you should drink oral rehydration solutions (ORS).

PandoraFrontier · 22/01/2025 20:50

Probably because you asked for something to stop the diarrhoea? Christ.

PerkyOchrePeer · 22/01/2025 21:56

Well it's all started up again I've got diarrhea

OP posts:
PerkyOchrePeer · 22/01/2025 22:02

Ok but he did sell it to me and if he was doing his job properly he would have said no sorry you're better off without it

PandoraFrontier · 22/01/2025 22:18

Just let it run its course. Eat, stay hydrated, your body will do its thing.

Your body wants to get whatever caused the diarrhoea OUT! The pharmacist should NOT have recommended imodium in this situation! IMO this is negligent on their part! I wouldn't take any more.
Are you also vomiting or keeping things orally down fine?
Any fever or blood in the stool?
Have you been abroad recently?

-Dioralyte can be made into ice lollies/cubes and sucked as an alternative option to get fluids in, and also helps disguise the salty flavour. Even making the sachet up then putting in the fridge for an hour also helps make it more palatable
-Bananas contain potassium, which is lost via diarrhoea and can also have a binding affect on the stools
-Plain (non oily/non creamy) consume soups can help with salt replacement and jelly can help add some sugar/protein.
-The BRAT diet can help till things settle

Its more a concern if you are also vomiting and extremely dehydrated. Call 111 if you are still concerned, but generally diarrhoea clears within 48hrs of so- depending on the cause.

PerkyOchrePeer · 22/01/2025 23:04

I am not vomiting and I will not take any more Imodium and I wonder why they sell emodium because if you should let nature take its course then Imodium is rubbish and they should take it off the market

Imodium has its place for those with chronic diarrhoea from a long term health condition- but this normally prescribed. The only other time I'd ever take it, would be say you were abroad and had travelers diarrhoea and desperately needed to travel on a train/bus with limited toilets for a single day. In your case, the cause could be bacterial, viral or any other cause- which you want out of your body ASAP! There are cases of people using imodium and the bug/toxin staying within their body made the condition much worse.

As I said in my thread earlier, the pharmacist should have explained imodium usage, and IMO is negligent in selling it for a sudden onset of diarrhoea like this- but I have no idea what you asked for, the conversation etc?

If you aren't vomiting, at least you can keep food and fluids down and should recover soon.

PerkyOchrePeer · 22/01/2025 23:52

Yes you are right. I was at work once and had the runs and had to get home so i took immodium so i could use the train

Ive also been advised by the pharmacist that i dont have to aĺter my diet if the diarrhea stops. However i did read inline that eating high fiber foods or caffeen or dairy cab bring it back or make you feel worse so i wonder if this is why my diarrhea statď again last night, because it stopped and i thought i could go back to eating normally again.

I think i need to make a telephone appointment with my GP. Thankfully my GP is very good.

Ohwtfnow · 23/01/2025 08:20

Imodium is either for people with chronic diarrhoea rather than acite diarrhoea or for use in emergencies, for example, if you are taken ill whilst out and need to travel home without shitting yourself. For acute diarrhoea it is definitely better out than in.

Ohwtfnow · 23/01/2025 08:21

You probably have a stomach bug - you don’t need to see your GP unless it continues for a week. Drink water and dioralyte and if you’re hungry stick to dry toast or rice.

PandoraFrontier · 23/01/2025 09:28

You don’t need your GP. Eat what you fancy when you fancy, plenty of fluids and rest. It’ll pass on its own.

faithbuffy · 23/01/2025 09:33

You'll be fine even without the rehydration
I had diarrhoea every 30 mins for 7 days and it was only on day 8 I got dehydrated
Keep drinking, apple juice diluted with water is good as well
