Upset stomach

Yesterday I had the most horrendous diarrhea. I managed to get to the pharmacy to get some Imodium to stop the diarrhoea and it did stop.

However I still feel unwell today so I've got some dioralyte to replace lost salts. The pharmacist said once I start taking this I should feel better but I don't know how often I should take it because the instructions say take it after every bowel movement but I'm no longer having bowel movements but I just feel absolutely drained and exhausted.

You probably have a stomach bug - you don’t need to see your GP unless it continues for a week. Drink water and dioralyte and if you’re hungry stick to dry toast or rice.

Its too laye. Ive made the appointmemt but i can canceo. However i need some professional advice about what to eat.

A friend currently has a stomach bug and its been 3 months and he is no better and npw he os going private

Dry toast and also rice it said you can eat eggs and fish and porridge and vegetables like asparagus

midgetastic · 23/01/2025 09:55

If you have a tummy bug don't take Imodium - let your body flush it out

Then don't eat for 24 to 48 hrs

Lots of liquid - dioralyye can be part of that as it helps make you feel better

Then eat things like dry toast and see what happens - eat beige food to start

Once the bug has cleared then worry about other stuff

Being impatient with a bug can make things much worse

PerkyOchrePeer · 23/01/2025 09:56

Just eating rice and dry toast is so boring

Justwingingit2005 · 23/01/2025 09:59

My understanding was imodium shouldn't be used for tummy bugs/ food poisoning as your body is trying to get rid of whatever is causing the issue.
My DH had two days of stomach upset then the flu. Maybe a coincidence.

Yes it is. But so is having diarrhoea for weeks because you don’t modify your diet until it passes. You don’t need to ask your go what you can eat, you can just google it. Bland, gentle food is what is always recommended, usually the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast) and no dairy. Ready salted crisps are usually ok too, and rich tea biscuits.

PandoraFrontier · 23/01/2025 11:22

I actually had diarrhoea for 3 weeks last year and the reason it went on so long was because I was following the BRAT diet which isn’t actually recommended any more. Lack of fibre = liquid stool in my case.

Just eat what you want.

Itsasintokillamockingbird · 23/01/2025 11:29

I had gastroenteritis recently. The GP told me to take rehydration tablets /sachets in every glass of water I had, eat if I felt hungry and let the illness run its course.

He didn't advise I take Imodium.

The blackcurrent ORS hydration tablets are really nice, by the way. I've become a bit addicted to them since my illness, but I have to stop because I don't think you're meant to take them unless you need to.

Itsasintokillamockingbird · 23/01/2025 11:31

The GP also said there is evidence to show that not eating in these circumstances can make the illness worse because it messes up your internal flora or something. Better to keep eating (maybe little and often).

PerkyOchrePeer · 23/01/2025 13:47

I'm taking the blackcurrant drink and somebody I know had to give a poo sample to be analyzed at her hospital and they then diagnosed her with food poisoning

OP posts:
PandoraFrontier · 23/01/2025 14:13

Yes OP but that’s only if the diarrhoea doesn’t settle or you’re severely ill. You don’t need stool samples done 2 days after getting diarrhoea, no doctor would give a shit.

PerkyOchrePeer · 23/01/2025 14:18

I just had my doctor's appointment and she said only eat dry biscuits so I said when I look this up it said I can eat porridge and white bread and white rice and she said no.

I absolutely refuse to live on dry biscuits for the next few days

I already said this in my posts yesterday OP, but the BRAT diet is recommended in this situation! And yes, I'm a health professional.

You can eat some dairy products when you have diarrhea, but you should limit or avoid them if they make your diarrhea worse.

What dairy products you can eat
Low-fat dairy: You can try low-fat milk, cheese, or yogurt.

Fermented dairy: Yogurt may help prevent or relieve diarrhea.

Non-fat yogurt: Non-fat yogurt may be beneficial, unless you are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk proteins.

I am so confused because this information I have posted conflict what the doctor was telling me

OP posts:
faithbuffy · 23/01/2025 14:53

Well follow whatever you want but bland stuff is best nothing acid or spicy
I ate salted hula hoops and fruit pastilles and that was it

If it's food poisoning it'll be campylobacter and you'll know about it. I had a 40c temp, sweat dripping off me, headache and constant diarrhoea to the point I lost 17lbs, and it's 24hrs a day

One day of an upset stomach could be anything

Then I have no idea why you are wasting your doctors time and the constant moaning on here if I’m honest. I hope you’re about 17, because you’re behaving like a child.

leaving the thread now because you’re so argumentative.

Livinginaclock · 23/01/2025 15:12

Christ, what a palaver for a day or two of the shits.

BeachRide · 23/01/2025 15:24

OP, how do you manage everyday life with this level of dependence? Hope you feel better soon, and don't misuse the NHS.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/01/2025 15:30

Wtaf is the point of consulting a doctor if you’re not going to listen them? Someone who really needed that appointment could have had that.

I am not vomiting and I will not take any more Imodium and I wonder why they sell emodium because if you should let nature take its course then Imodium is rubbish and they should take it off the market

Imodium has it's uses. I go through 3 boxes a week. I wouldn't have a life otherwise outside of the bog.

But I can tell the difference now after all these years. If I feel ill on top then it's best to just let the body have it's clear out. Eat what you feel up to eating. Dioralite has it's uses, it'll perk you up for a bit, it doesn't need an exact schedule. I don't tend to use it unless I'm on day 3 of illness induced runs though.

It's not a massive deal, you don't need a GP for a couple of days of diarrhoea.

There is a COVID going around though that affects the guts. It'll give you 5 days + of bright yellow diarrhea and imodium doesn't stop it.

It ends though.

CountingDownToSummer · 23/01/2025 19:33

Op you said you needed professional advice on what to eat, you got it but are disregarding it.

Why on earth did you take up a doctors appt, firstly an upset stomach does not need a drs appt , but to then decide you're ignoring the advice is unbelievable.

PerkyOchrePeer · 24/01/2025 07:30

The loose bowel movements seems to have stopped. No diorrea all day yesterday but now i have constapation. I believe if you have no diorrea for 2 days then you are no longer infectious

OP posts:
Mindymomo · 24/01/2025 10:59

Glad your diarrhoea has stopped, don’t know why you needed to see a GP when you clearly know all there is to know about your condition and the advice you were given by GP you are not going to accept.

PerkyOchrePeer · 24/01/2025 11:09

Yes but even though it has stopped I feel exhausted so I am taking it easy. I had 9 hours sleep last night but I feel as though I've hardly slept. Tomorrow evening I was meant to be going to a friend's birthday meal but although I could technically go I'm too tired and I need to do a Sainsbury's grocery shop but I'm too exhausted to go down there so I've done an online shop instead.
