Mouth ulcers

mothertrucking · 18/01/2025 20:53

I've always had recurring mouth ulcers, I switched to SLS free toothpaste and rarely get them anymore. I ran out of toothpaste this week so just used an ordinary one.

I've now got a really painful ulcer at the back of my mouth/roof of mouth, start of throat area. It's really red and swollen, hurts to eat and I can't open my mouth properly. I've been pretty stressed this week and obviously have used toothpaste with SLS in it 😠 which I'm presuming is why I've got this now. My throat is sore AF and my ear is hurting from it.

I don't have any Anbesol that I'd usually use. Are there any other remedies I can try to ease the pain from it?

There are several good over the counter treatments for mouth ulcers. Your first line of treatement will be seeing your pharmacist.

pizzaHeart · 18/01/2025 21:10

I usually use Bonjela gel.

Tooty78 · 18/01/2025 21:20

Lysine tablets, I had an ulcer starting on the side of my tongue this morning took two of the Lysine tablets and it's gone! They are also good for stopping cold sores.

Tooty78 · 18/01/2025 21:21

P.S. Gargle with soluble co codamol or aspirin for the pain.

mothertrucking · 18/01/2025 21:22

Thankyou for the tips. Can you buy Lysine over the counter?

I gargle very warm salt water and pop a lot of vitamin B pills whenever I have a mouth ulcer. Also drink lots of water, i only get them when I'm dehydrated at night.

I used to get them very very often but not too much any more. I used to be borderline anemic but I'm not any more, and I think that's why I no longer get them as much. Might be worth checking out

First sign of vitamin b12 deficiency is mouth ulcers. I used to get up to 20 a month.
I started SI b12 every week 3 years ago.. haven't had one scince.
It's help many other ailments too.

mildlydispeptic · 18/01/2025 21:25

Difflam mouth rinse multiple times a day should help.

Tipperttruck · 18/01/2025 21:26

Chew on a clove. It's very very disgusting but it's very effective at numbing things.

Oldcrockpot · 18/01/2025 21:27

@Moier that’s odd because I get them a lots and last blood test showed I had too much b12?!

POTC · 18/01/2025 21:27

Corsodyl mouthwash was recommended by my dentist when I had regular mouth ulcers

Chunkychipsohyeah · 18/01/2025 21:28

Try asking pharmacy for Difflam spray; my daughter’s dentist prescribed this for her when she used to get a lot of mouth ulcers - it’s effective.

Yes you can, as it is a supplement, but I get mine off Amazon as they are better value.

PickAChew · 18/01/2025 23:10

Calpol is very soothing - I discovered this as a teen when had flu with the usual break out of ulcers that I get with viruses and only aspirin tablets in the house for adults which made me feel worse and gave me horrible tinnitus so I nabbed some of my little sister's Calpol, instead. Bliss.

Foxgloverr · 18/01/2025 23:14

Not the point but wondering what SLS free toothpaste you use? I've been having problems with sore/tingly patches on my gums/tongue and wondering about trying these. All my blood tests were normal.

badwife23 · 18/01/2025 23:15

I get recurring mouth ulcers too op. Actually had one and the same place you're describing a few months back and was miserable for weeks. The pain travelled into my ear and head. Swollen glands, the lot. So I sympathise.

For me, corsadyl mouthwash (or the cheaper dupe from home bargains), salt water rinses, loads of paracetamol and remembering to take vitamin c/zinc supplements help. But really it's one of those things I've learnt I just have to ride out. Hope it clears up soon. Anything more than 10 days-2 weeks and I'd see your GP.

Gels and pastes won't work in that location but if you can get anbesol liquid it's a good (albeit short lived) pain reliever.

There is a theory that very high b12 levels can be because your body isn't absorbing it so it's floating about. A lot of people think this is due to the mthfr genetic mutation which apparently 50% of the population have. It means you can't absorb folic acid (the synthetic form of folate). Instead you need actual folate. Although, this is a rabbit hole online and the true science on this is wound up in people pushing folate supplements and anti vaxxers.

Garlicnorth · 18/01/2025 23:19

If it isn't B12, it could be zinc. Deficiency in either can cause mouth ulcers.

The spot where you say you have an ulcer could be tonsillitis (you can get if you don't have tonsils, too). Unfortunately, it still comes down to gargling with whichever mouth-safe antiseptics you have to hand and maybe taking ibuprofen or something to ease the pain.

Changebing · 18/01/2025 23:22

I had this and it was due to an iron deficiency. I would ask for a blood test to check your iron levels.

You can't ever have too much B12 ever. What your body doesn't need it comes out in your urine.. so not sure who told you that. It's impossible.

I use Sensodyne. It's really stopped me getting any mouth sores since I started using it.

I always have a pack of soluble aspirin to use as a gargle (and then swallow). Kills the pain a bit.

mothertrucking · 19/01/2025 15:50

Thanks everyone. The last time my b12 was checked it was on the low side but within the normal range. I've been and bought corsodyl toothpaste. It isn't as painful today as it was yesterday so hopefully it's going. The only problem I have is opening my mouth to eat because it's so sore right on the joint of my jaw from it.

Funnily enough I have another horrid one now! I had a referral to the hospital but they basically just said it’s one of those things some people are susceptible to. They didn’t even take any bloods but I have had bloods for something else and all came back ok. I honestly just have to medicate with paracetamol and accept I’m going to feel shit for a week until it heals.

I’ve tried all sorts of ointments, gels, mouthwashes, salt water but nothing really helps. Anbesol liquid is about the best thing for instant pain relief but it doesn’t last long.
