DH needs to stop and I'd like to hear how you gave up. I am looking into something other than nigotine patches or will power alone.

is he totally and completely committed to stopping?

he should see his GP or his nearest NHS smoking cessation clinic. they can tailor a programme that is best for him and his needs and provide statistics about methods and their success rates.

NRT can be extremely valuable to some smokers looking to stop.

WideWebWitch · 03/05/2008 18:28

I read Allen Carr's Easy way to stop smoking and I was pregnant so KNEW I had to stop. It's been 5.5 years now.

expatinscotland · 03/05/2008 18:31

i think charliecat stopped with Allan Carr as well.

expatinscotland · 03/05/2008 18:31

my dad stopped with Zyban, but he had tried all other options, was a heavy smoker for over 50 years and REALLY needed to stop to preserve his sight.

WideWebWitch · 03/05/2008 18:32

Allen Carr

jwithin · 03/05/2008 18:43

I stopped by using a lady hypnotist, brilliant, four years ago. Hand on heart, probably had two cigs over that time and tasted disgusting. Well worth the money and she even "programmed" me not to mind when DH smoked right by me. I imaginary smoked if I got really stressed, using a pencil or whatever and it took about two weeks for that to stop too. Dh has stopped now, using patches and he's never looked back either. Good luck!

I used Paul McKenna which cost the same as 40 cigarettes!.

Listened to the cd twice a day, morning as I woke and evening as I fell asleep for 3 weeks and haven't smoked since.

Good luck

charliecat · 03/05/2008 19:02

allen carr and www.whyquit.com till you know it inside out back to front. Its like hypnotherapy, you change the way your mind thinks about fags. For every reason you can think to have JUST ONE whyquit has drummed it into you that its just not worth it....it is PERFECTLY reasonable to be thinking like that BUT your not going to smoke. Never Take Another Puff.
Worked for me for ....er....3years and a half now....
Tell him to give it a go

CoteDAzur · 03/05/2008 19:43

Another vote for whyquit.com here. I quit at the beginning of the year after a week spent reading that website over and over again. No patches, no drugs, no cravings.

Once you really don't want to smoke, you don't. The way to get there is through convincing yourself that it really is disgusting and stupid.

colacubes · 03/05/2008 19:53

I stopped, cold turkey, had the date planned, had my last fag at 12.20, went to bed got up and thought, today is the day. Not smoked since, been 2yrs 6 months, best thing i ever did.

Jzee · 03/05/2008 20:12

Thanks all for your tips: Do you have to enrol in classes for the Allan Carr method? If so, how much? DH has given up before, and doesn't smoke at home it's really a work related habit.

sorry i think allen carr only works if you really wanna believe it.
Ive read it twice now and still smoking. I think a lot of allen carrs stuff now sounds shit (since his death I mean, it doesnt ring as true)

I have thought about hypnotherapy though

Another vote for Allen Carr. Worked for me, 19 years ago

mosschops30 · 03/05/2008 20:26

VO i cant quite remember, the first time I read it was before his death. The 2nd time I remember reading it and thinking 'well alan thats not quite right is it', but I dont know what.

Ive also heard that new drug champix is good, I met a rep and he explained it to me, in principle sounds very good, dont know anyone thats quit with it though

Elibean · 03/05/2008 20:26

And tbh, of course it only works if you want it to - but don't you have to want to stop for anything to work?

Its just a tool - not magic (unfortunately).

I know what you mean about his death, poor man - but the fact that he was human and therefore fallible doesn't make his book any less useful, to me.

i'm saving up to go to the clinic, you can use tesco vouchers

sophiewd · 03/05/2008 20:37

Gave up using hypnotherapy, tried everything else including ALan Carr and was the only thing that worked

StressTeddy · 03/05/2008 20:46

Apparently, there's a new wonder drug available from your gp - you have to take it for 12 weeks. It can make you feel very sick I believe but even hardened smokers are succesfully quitting with it. Sorry, can't remember the name but I think it has a very high succes rate
Good luck to him

mosschops30 · 03/05/2008 21:05

thats champix, its bonds to the same neuro-receptors as nicotine or something like that

Hobo · 03/05/2008 21:08

I gave up 19 months ago with nicotine gum.
It helped that i had flu to begin with.

Top tip....give up with the flu.

undervalued · 03/05/2008 21:08

It's called Champix(sp?) stressteddy, and I can say it is brilliant. I have given up for 10 months now. I still have some cravings but it was easier than I thought. Good luck to those trying.
