What's covid like these days?

amoreoamicizia · 08/12/2024 11:02

I am (or was!) well out of the covid loop but spent an hour or so with a woman who was just recovering from a nasty virus- that she was at pains to insist wasn't covid- a couple of days ago. I've woken up with slight vertigo today which was exactly what happened the last time I had covid but that was 18 months ago now. Is it still a sign of it? Is there a working test these days?

I wouldn't test any more, it’s not relevant, it’s a virus like any other

Actually it isn't a virus like any other. My step dad died of it. And when I had it, it took me about a year to get my running to the same level as it had been before. A year. Though it's true to say that as so many are sedentary or obese these days, they wouldn't notice the difference.

And other virus’ can give post virus syndrome, it’s not new to covid.
My DF died from a virus 20 odd years ago, before the epidemic.

If you can't answer please go away.

Ah, so you only want answers that you agree with. I’ll happily go away then.

amoreoamicizia · 08/12/2024 11:17

Good, thank you.

Doesn't realer matter if it's covid or not, there's still no medicine you can take

Wendolino · 08/12/2024 11:18

OP what's the point of asking a question on a forum if you don't want people's opinions?

JadedCat · 08/12/2024 11:20

Have you done a test?
Whilst the tests have been updated less than the vaccines, might still be worth doing. The best way to get a correct result is to ensure you swab 5 areas - inside upper and lower right cheek, same with left, throat, right nostril, left nostril.
Best wishes for a full recovery.

Winter41 · 08/12/2024 11:21

The op didn't ask anyone if they thought she should test.

amoreoamicizia · 08/12/2024 11:21

I haven't asked for people's ill-informed opinions on covid. As if we haven't had enough of that. If anyone cares to answer the questions posed, that is welcome. Otherwise keep your opinions to yourself.

Are you new here, OP??

OfDragonsDeep · 08/12/2024 11:23

I had Covid about a month ago. It felt different to a cold for me (although DH’s was very much like a cold). I was shivery, hot and cold. Very tired for a few days. Bit of a sore throat and croaky voice. I’ve only had Covid once before and o recognised it straight away this time.

I still took a test which came up as an immediate line as I didn’t want to pass it on if I could help it. I didn’t stop my day to day life, but wouldn’t go round elderly relatives houses for example. I think that’s the decent thing to do.

So rude 🤣🤣🤣

Why not just do a test then??? Then you'll know. Other people can only tell you if their Covid is similar if they know they've had it. And they can only know if they've done a test. Means nothing if you haven't tested.

Delatron · 08/12/2024 16:06

I would test. Just so you know what you are dealing with. I have a rule that I don’t f**ck about with Covid. So if positive - I’d rest more than normal.

The risk of long covid (mainly from overdoing it) is higher than many other viruses. Covid tends to be more inflammatory. My main symptom has always been crushing fatigue and dizziness. No runny nose or cold symptoms.

Think only newer tests work and it takes a while to show up.

The tests still work the same as before - no evidence for any reduced accuracy. They’re easy to get hold off, e.g. Tesco, Home Bargains etc.

Symptoms still very loads.

Cynic17 · 08/12/2024 16:10

Nobody knows, because none of us would ever test. It's irrelevant. If you're a bit snotty, it could be a cold or Covid but, as always, it will soon pass.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/12/2024 16:12

Had this kind of reaction when I once light heartedly asked. I had Covid a couple of weeks ago. I woke up with a really blocked nose and sinus pressure but didn’t feel ill per se maybe a bit hot at times. Thought it was allergies but when it didn’t subside a couple of days later something told me to do a test. I always wondered why people bothered but I knew I felt different as hadn’t felt ill up to it. Then about two days after I tested I felt awful, tired and achy and spent two days in bed. I lost sense of taste and smell but only for a day or two

JaneWolfHall · 08/12/2024 16:17

I had covid for the first time a few months ago. I ordered tests online and tested positive. Family were asking me to check and it did prove I had a reason to say I felt unwell. I am older but did not have a serious illness. I had a runny nose, sneezing at first like a cold, then very tired, achy and temperature. After several days I lost my appetite. I was more tired than normal for 2 weeks but fine after that.

There is if you're eligible, you can have paxlovid
I did

DaisyChain505 · 08/12/2024 17:09

Just like before Covid was a thing, some colds or illnesses I have hit harder than others. Some colds I just go about my usual life and feel a bit rundown and bunged up, others I have to take a day or two off work.

stop testing and just take it as it comes like any other cold or virus you get.

comeondover · 08/12/2024 17:17

I had it in October. The tests worked. Took 2 weeks to test negative again. Coughing, sneezing, loss of sense of smell, some gut disturbance, and minor exertion brought on a sweat and fatigue.

rewilded · 08/12/2024 17:24

The ever supportive Mumsnet!

I hope you are feeling better soon OP.
