had to go to emergancy docs thurs night due to pains in back and chest whilst breathing doc gave me painkillers and said it was a muscle. been to my own docs today as pain is still there and the doctor as diagnosed plurisey. dont no much about this other than it being an inflamation in the lining of the lung. has anybody ever had this and how long did the pain last?

I've had it - the pain was unbelievable. The tablets did a good job of knocking the pain off but it took probably about 10 days for them to wear off to just an ache instead of stabbing.

I have had it too - when I was 18 and sleeping rough.

It was horrible - incredible pain in my chest and back, made worse by muscle damage that meant I couldn't move my left arm without weeping.

IIRC (was nearly ten years ago!) it took about a week for the pain to die down. Was given anti-inflammatory drugs (diclofenac?).

Poor you - hope you feel better soon.

tye · 29/04/2008 22:38

Yep AGONY. WEEKS i had it, wouldnt shift.3 lots of antibiotics and still dont feel as healthy as i did before, was 3 years ago now.
Get antibiotics. It wont go on its own.

Ledodgy · 29/04/2008 22:40

Yes I have had it and it's horrible I got some relief by putting a hot water bottle on my chest and took nurofen round the clock.

beaniesteve · 29/04/2008 22:40

My sister did - I thought she was dying. nuff said.

charliecat · 29/04/2008 22:40

yes it did, prop yourself in bed so the fluid isnt drowning you. DO you have pills? you need to be taking antibiotics. Made me sweat and delerious too.
Really ill, thought i was gonna die.

Spidermama · 29/04/2008 22:42

Yes. Very sore. Very scarey.

I had it then it recurred about ten years later. I haven't had it for ages but I'm always worried it will come back.

The severe pain lasted about two days .... then pretty bad for a couple of weeks more ... now nothing.

I find it hard that they seem to be vague on the diagnosis and prognosis of this.

eemie · 29/04/2008 22:43

You may not need antibiotics. It's often viral, mine was. None the less painful for that. It got better on its own but rest in hospital, painkillers and anti-inflammatories helped. The first week was the worst, then the residual pains took several weeks to go.

Get well soon

YouWillBeDeleted · 29/04/2008 22:50

I've had it twice. It is agony for 10 days or so. Make sure you take your painkillers and anti inflammatories on time and sleep propped up a bit as it helps. It feels like someone is stabbing you in the chest with a knife, its awful but its not forever. You might need anti biotics too. Try and make sure you finish the course, i ended up with pneumonia and i totally blame not finishing them. You have my sympathies, hope you have someone to help out with the kids.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 29/04/2008 22:51

My sister had it and was in hopsital for 3 weeks. She did have it on top of a sickle cell crisis though which I'm sure complicated matters.

She said it was the worst she'd ever felt and the pain lingered for a few months (although not in the same way as when she was actually ill with it.)

I hope you get over it a lot sooner.

madamez · 29/04/2008 22:53

Not quite but terrible chest infection 15 years ago and could not lie down to sleep as I was drowning. Pile yourself up with cushions and pillows, take all your meds, rest as much as possible, it is vile but you will get better.

tye · 29/04/2008 22:54

yes charlie cat i have pills the doc gave me painkillers there called diclofenac all though im not sure there helping that much. i no what you mean about the dying bit to have never known pain like it. suppose i feel so rubbish due to bein on iron as lost a lot of blood during my misscarrige so really weak to. things couldnt get any worse at the minute. thank you all for your posts

ds1 had pleurisy and pnuemonia and when it was finally diagosed he was admitted to hospital for a week with IV antibiotics. They did talk about draining his lungs but didnt need to in the end

OP posts:
ChocolateRockingHorse · 29/04/2008 23:22

Co codomol IS a pain killer! It's codiene and paracetamol.. don't think you can take anything else with it, except maybe Ibuprofen, but you'd need to check that...

tye · 29/04/2008 23:26

oh best check with the docs then im bloody usless with tablets dont no whats what.

charliecat · 01/05/2008 16:11

Hows you doing now tye?

NomDePlume · 01/05/2008 16:43

My Mum had it a couple of years ago. She was admitted to hospital with it as they thought she was having a heart attack and as a long term smoker with a maternal family history of heart attacks in the late 30's/early 40's, they took it very seriously indeed.

She was kept in for a week. She said the pain was agony and v scary (she lives in a v rural area, the nearest 'proper' hospital is an hour away by car).

bran · 01/05/2008 16:52

I had it years ago and it was agony, I got pneumonia because I wasn't breathing deeply enough and part of my lung collapsed. I was in hospital for 5 nights and had 4 different types of anti-biotics. I think I was off work for over a fortnight. Even now, 15 years later, I still get a stabbing pain in the same place if I have a bad cough.

You will have to rest a lot, but make sure that you take a few deep breaths a couple of times an hour at least to keep your lungs open (it'll hurt though). I hope the pain eases soon.

YouWillBeDeleted · 01/05/2008 16:55

Glad you're being well looked after. How are you feeling today?

TheFallenMadonna · 01/05/2008 16:56

I had it quite recently, along with pneumonia. It hurt! Was dreadful for about a week, then gradually improved over the next two weeks or so. Hurts a bit now (6 weeks on), but not all the time. And nothing like as much.
