Really sore throat (and I mean really sore!!)

pelvicflawed · 29/04/2008 08:02

I have had a really sore throat for the last two days - no cold though. Its so painful that its agony to swallow and kept me awake quite a bit last night). I also have a slight temp. Paracetamol/ibropfen just about makes it bearable but I don't ever remember having such a bad throat. I don't want to waste the GP'S time as I know if its a virus there isn't much they can do but how long would you give it before making an appointment??????

could be tonsillitis?, i've just had it myself, sorest throat i've ever had plus a temperature. it took ab's to shift it for me. has it made your voice sound different?

pelvicflawed · 29/04/2008 08:10

In theory I shouldn't have any tonsils as I had them out when I was five - but can you still get it in your throat?? - strage thing IS voice is fine (though obviously I don't want to talk much)- its like at the very top of my throat that is sore. Thanks for the post.

Try gargling with some soluble aspirin.

I would go to the GP tbh if you've had it this long as well as a temp.

lucykate · 29/04/2008 08:13

i've heard you can still get it if there was a small amount of tonsil tissue left behind, if it's painful to swallow, i'd go to gp. have you tried gargling with diluted tcp? i've always found that helps sore throats

pelvicflawed · 29/04/2008 08:19

Thanks all - I think I will make an appointment - I'll try the gargling as well. I've kept poor DH awake last night with lots of huffing and ouching every time I swallow. I'm just not used to sore throats - when I get colds it always goes in my nose/eyes not my throat - but that said I don't seem to have a cold.

pelvicflawed - I have no tonsils and am now recovering from something very similar. weirdly mine started on one side and then switched to the other. doctor said it was a virus and no anti biotics needed. Now however it has turned into a horrid sinus type thing. Hope this doesnt happen to you and that you are on the mend soon. I feel a bit short changed to have a sore throat when I have no tonsils !!!

Elibean · 29/04/2008 23:09

dh has just had four utterly miserable days with ulcers in his throat - I've had this in the past, and its the worse pain I've ever had. Sympathy to you if its like this - and FWIW gargling with soluble aspirin every few hours (or before meals) helps.

BTW, GP gave dh Tramadol, which is really strong - and when I had them I was given a form of morphine (!) and, when that didn't really help, regular Voltarol suppositories - which did. A nurse once told me that throat pain is one of the worst kinds, because of all the nerves....it helped me feel less of a wuss.

If its ulcer/s, they tend to start to heal on the 4th day and then suddenly get better on the 5th...if thats any consolation.

Hope you're better soon!

Friendlypizzaeater · 29/04/2008 23:16

You can get a spray from the chemist that has a long stick and makes you gag but numbs the back of your throat.

mylovelymonster · 29/04/2008 23:18

PF - Gargle. A few times a day, with a good mouthwash or boiled and cooled to warm salty water (don't swallow). Should help.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 29/04/2008 23:20

Ooh ues Chloroseptic is it called??! Very good for killer sore throats I've had in my time.. that felt like I'd been swallowing minced up razor blades!!!

sarahsixtoes · 30/04/2008 07:18

You need antibiotics if there are white spots on your swollen tonsils. If your throat is just very red its usually a viral thing. Regular ibuprofen (Neurofen Meltlets work really well as their soluble IMO) and I like Throaties and Tyrozets which can both be bought over the counter! Icy cold drinks to keep you cool as well ...Hope you feel better soon.

mousemole · 30/04/2008 07:24

Elibean - I have had ulcers in the back of my throat with this virus as well. It's a miserable bug. Hope your LO is on the mend.

Bridie3 · 30/04/2008 08:56

Manuka honey is what you need. From some supermarkets and health food shops. It's fantastic with sore throats--zaps the infection.

Take a teaspoon 3 times a day and let it kind of melt over the back of your throat.

mousemole · 30/04/2008 09:26

thanks Bridie, will get some today. Have been using regular honey to date.

Bridie3 · 30/04/2008 10:49

Regular honey is also good but Manuka is a real bug-buster! I'm currently using it externally on an infected spot on my son's leg.

winebeforepearls · 30/04/2008 10:52

Just had similar - It was agony. Do you have horrid looking white spots at back of throat?

Went to doc, got anti-bs, now better. Hope you're feeling better too.

moondog · 30/04/2008 10:56

Oh God, I suffered like never before with this recently. It was hell.To make things worse it was on a romantic weekend away in v. poosh hotel. I couldn't enjoy any of it and was pacing streets like a mad woman at 8:30 looking for a pharmacy and when i found one I burst into tears.

I had to see the GP (never do usally) but what was helpful was that numbing throat spray nad gallons of clod water with chips of ice.

My sympathies,I truly can't ever remember feeling in so much pain.

mistlethrush · 30/04/2008 10:57

I've got same very sore throat very high in throat - problem swallowing, sneezing, coughing, awake at night etc. Can't take paracetamol or anything similar at the moment - might have to head into town for some manuka honey...

mousemole · 30/04/2008 11:17

obviously some nasy virus doing the rounds. I have found this 'shot' to be effective
in a shot glass put
1 teaspoon cayenner pepper
1 teaspoon honey ( manuka as per bridie's sugg)
1 ground garlic clove
1 teaspoon olive oil
top up with warm water and DOWN IT ! Your eyes will water but then your throat and sinuses will feel much better.

winebeforepearls · 30/04/2008 11:22

Also ice-cream, for many reasons but especially for this throat.

should've said, I realised afterwards that the doc had given me the anti-bs for bronchitis, and this was probably a virus on top of that.

Gosh I have been really ill and have Struggled On. Must book a day in bed when DH gets back

morningpaper · 30/04/2008 11:28

sounds like Strep throat

See a GP - there are some nasty streps going round and you might need a swab or antibiotics

bluefox · 30/04/2008 11:30

DD is ill in bed with this and her first GCSE is Friday. Might try the honey stuff.

morningpaper · 30/04/2008 11:34

there have been recent fatalities due to complications with Strep - our hospital went into over-drive recently - see a GP if you are worried

winebeforepearls · 30/04/2008 11:34

Yes, MP, I thought Strep throat. Doc didn't say. I got through about one packet of Strepsils a day ...

Bluefox, I hope she's better in time. It does knock you out a bit.

mousemole · 30/04/2008 11:49

what exactly is strep and what are the complications ?
