Why did they scan my lungs ?

I had an appointment to have an ultrasound scan today to check the health of my ovaries. During my appointment, the radiologist also scanned my lungs and said this was routine now. I didn't really think anything of it but now I'm wondering why ? I don't smoke or anything. Does anyone know?

An ultrasound of your lungs? Did they touch your breast or do this through your back?

Edited because I stupidly asked if you’re a women.

helpfulperson · 22/11/2024 21:08

This happened to me when I had stomach pains.. I queried it and they said that infection can sometimes show up there when not showing up in urine test. It was a female radiologist.

Gummybear23 · 22/11/2024 21:09

No, when you undergo a medical scan focused on the ovaries (such as a pelvic ultrasound or a CT scan of the pelvic area), it is not intended to scan your lungs. These scans are specific to the pelvic region, which includes the ovaries, uterus, and surrounding structures.
However, if you're undergoing a CT scan or similar imaging that covers a broader area (e.g., an abdomen and pelvis scan), part of the lower lungs might incidentally be included in the imaging field, depending on the purpose of the scan.

LadyGabriella · 22/11/2024 21:10

They used the ultrasound machine to look at your lungs after looking at your ovaries?

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 22/11/2024 21:17

TB is on the rise, so maybe there's been a spike in cases in your area and they thought they might as well check since you were there anyway?

lightsandtunnels · 22/11/2024 21:17

I have had this too. I was in having scan on my kidneys as I had suspected kidney stones and they also did a lung xray which they said was routine. I was in too much pain to ask why!

Greybeardy · 22/11/2024 21:19

depends what they were looking for on the ovarian scan, but it's not necessarily as 'out there' as it sounds. I'd have asked them for a bit more info though if I didn't understand/wasn't happy with the explanation before carrying on.

ForPearlViper · 22/11/2024 21:21

I don't know why but given an increasing focus on preventative medicine it does make lot of sense is you are already under the CT machine and the area is nearby.

I've been on a trial of 2 year CT scans for current/former smokers which I understand is going to be rolled out nationwide. My last scan picked up what looked like an issue in my upper colon so I was fast-tracked into the system - it was fine but I am pleased it happened.

Cysco · 22/11/2024 21:21

What I had my scan the person checked my kidneys too, as he said it's routine now, did they say they were checking your lungs?

BobbleHatsRule · 22/11/2024 21:23

Ultrasound isn't used on lungs. Was it an xray?

If ultrasound did they say it was lungs and where was the probe placed?

ultrasound can be used for some lung stuff.

shootingstar1 · 22/11/2024 21:25

Yes it was definitely my lungs as they asked me to breathe in and out and hold for a few seconds . It wasn't a CT scan - it was the same type of scan they use during pregnancy (so ultrasound?).

They were checking my ovaries and pelvic area due to having pain in this area.

I'm not worried or anything. More curious to be honest

Just to be clear, they scanned my pelvic area first and then moved the probe to my rib cage area. I had to be on my side for this with my arms behind my head .

I also had an internal scan for the pelvic pain but totally understand this part.

Did they put the ultrasound wand on your chest?

Not on my chest, more rib cage area and at the side.

Right side? Or both sides? Wondering if they were checking gallbladder maybe.

Branconche · 22/11/2024 21:44

I do ultrasound scans as part of my job. They have scanned your kidneys, definitely not your lungs. The breathing in and out is so the diaphragm pushes your kidneys down so they're much easier to see - standard when scanning kidneys.

That makes sense. I've always had my kidneys scanned as part of a pelvic ultrasound.

shootingstar1 · 22/11/2024 22:01

Yeah kidneys would make much more sense. It's likely I have misheard then and it was my kidneys and not my lungs 🤦🏻‍♀️. I have a follow up appointment with the GP in a fortnights time so can double check then too.

Would of been kidneys

You breath in and out for them
Had my kidneys scanned many times

It wouldnt of been your lungs

Not routine lung scans as part of a gynae exam. It's definitely kidneys and OP has mini catastrophised

SmallChanges01 · 23/11/2024 09:26

I’m not sure but when I went to A&E and had various tests including a CT scan I was told to speak to my GP the next day who told me I had a kidney and lung infection (no symptoms for either and I had gone for something completely unrelated.)

shootingstar1 · 23/11/2024 12:35

@BobbleHatsRule I don't think I "catastrophised" anything. I asked a question because I was curious and have admitted I was probably wrong based on the answers given.

She didn’t catastrophise.
She states that she isn’t worried just curious.

Interestingly I was asked to have a phone appointment about my lungs and assumed it was a general chk.
After a few questions it transpired that 28 years ago I was wrongly recorded as a smoker by my then gp practice.
Thank goodness I never had to claim on any health or travel insurance.

fivebyfivebuffy · 23/11/2024 13:10

Funnily I went for a kidney scan and got back there was nothing wrong with them but they had spotted a big cyst on my ovary

I'm thankful as it actually turned out I have severe endometriosis which was why I had so many UTI symptoms and now I'm on the pathway to surgery
