Constant bloody mouth ulcers???

Charr001 · 17/11/2024 19:41

Does anyone ever get ulcers all the time!!
I might go couple weeks without them at most, none yesterday and 3 today.

They bloody kill & put me right off eating any food because of it, on my tongue my cheek etc!!

I started to use listerine daily along with brushing my teeth and it didn't make a difference. Is it a deficiency?? Driving me mad!!

Thanks!!

I get crops of them when generally run down or lacking in sleep.

Taking fizzy vitamin C plus an iron supplement daily helps a lot.

Try switching your toothpaste for one without SLS (foaming agent). I use some eco stuff that doesn't foam and that also helps.

Stirrednshaken · 17/11/2024 21:31

Do you eat a lot of crisps? I've found them to be worse when I do. Also when stressed which I can't do much about. My brother has Crohn's though and one of his symptoms was constant mouth ulcers and multiple at a time, so if you have other symptoms I'd get checked out.

Tooty78 · 17/11/2024 21:36

Try Lysine supplement, when you feel the start of one of the bloody things take a couple of Lysine tablets. Usually sees the buggers off, had success treating cold sores as well.

Rosybud88 · 17/11/2024 21:44

Another poster has already mentioned this but please switch your toothpaste to one which doesn’t have any SLS in it. Sensodyne whitening I believe doesn’t have any but always check because a lot of mainstream toothpastes have this. I don’t get any mouth ulcers anymore unless I’m caught out with toothpaste (forgetting it whilst away etc) and then they come straight back with a vengeance. Please please please try this and I really hope it helps. I suffered for years until I found this tip online.

ProfessorInklingsCousin · 17/11/2024 21:45

I get them a lot when I’m run down - corsodyl mouthwash really helps with the pain and helps them heal quicker too.

DuesToTheDirt · 17/11/2024 21:47

Same here with the toothpaste. I used to get loads, but switched to SLS/SLES-free toothpaste (most Sensodyne, but check the ingredients) and I hardly get any now.

Delorian · 17/11/2024 21:49

Mouth ulcers indicate B12 and iron deficiency so I'd start there. If it is very persistent then a celiac test.

ChateauMargaux · 17/11/2024 21:54

Could be celiac disease, gluten intolerance and / or deficienciea in B vitamins, Iron or zinc.... and the SLS in toothpaste..

WinterMorn · 17/11/2024 21:54

Anbesol gel worked a treat for my husband and he had them for weeks!

Motherrr · 17/11/2024 21:56

Used to get them all the time in my 20s so feel your pain. It's miserable when you can't eat or talk easily!!

Apparently they happen less often as you get older. Defo happened when run down. My dad feels he had them less often when he stated using mouthwash but I'm not sure they are to do with oral hygiene?

I also agree with this. It worked for my daughter too.
Avoid any toothpaste with sodium laureth sulphate in, hopefully you’ll find it’s a game changer.

simplesimply · 17/11/2024 21:59

I stopped getting them once I switched to sensodyne toothpaste that is sls free.
Also Listerine mouthwash is not great corsodyl daily mouthwash is a lot more gentle but works well.
Corsodyl in the little round bottle helps heal them and takes some of the pain away when you have them.

dinopants23 · 17/11/2024 22:02

I feel your pain. I get really bad ones every month or so. I used to think it was when I was run down but now I'm wondering if it's linked to my cycle. Either way they are shit. I've had a particularly nasty one on the back of my throat recently and it felt like tonsillitis. Agony swallowing, pain that radiated to my ear and head. Really horrible. It wasn't until I got a torch and had a proper look that I realised it was a massive mouth ulcer.

I always thought salt water rinses were meant to help but my dentist said it can irritate them more. For me it's just paracetamol, lots of water and plenty of rest if possible. I treat it like an illness because for me I genuinely feel totally wiped out when I get them and really do need to rest up.

dinopants23 · 17/11/2024 22:02

Oh and anbesol liquid (not gel) for temporary but effective pain relief.

DaphneFlower · 17/11/2024 22:06

I had that when I got run down. The only thing that worked for me was multivitamins and minerals including zinc.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/11/2024 22:08

Can be a sign of b12 deficiency so might some bloods checked.

Nat6999 · 17/11/2024 23:48

I had a mouth full of ulcers & bleeding lips last winter when I had pneumonia. I did saltwater rinses & used Azulenal cream on my lips. Normally I have awful split lips whenever the heating goes on but touch wood since increasing my fluid intake this year I haven't had to use the cream once.

Enough4me · 17/11/2024 23:50

Vitamin C with zinc. Heals and strengthens from within. Cheap own brands are as good as ones with additional branding.

DottyDodger · 17/11/2024 23:57

Gluten and dairy intolerance caused mine, I'm pretty sure.

Rarely get them now, but they do crop up if when I cheat with food..

vegaspotty · 18/11/2024 00:01

Avoid gluten!!

Autumnweddingguest · 18/11/2024 00:02

Could be a sign of being run down, viral infection or more.

But if you feel okay generally, it could be a reaction to a toxin. As PP have said, avoid toothpaste with sodium laurel sulphate. And avoid bananas. A trace pesticide used on them can cause ulcers in some people. DS1 used to get constant mouth ulcers but once he cut out these two things, they vanished.

Kilroywashere · 18/11/2024 00:03

I get mouth ulcers if I use pink gel type toothpaste. Also from eating certain foods too often - Brazil nuts, walnuts are the worst. A couple are OK.

Charr001 · 18/11/2024 18:34

Thank you ALL for your suggestions!! 🥰
I will switch my toothpaste and see if any difference if not I'll make an appointment! X

I have a feeling it's stress but I do seem to get them bad at least a couple times a month! I don't eat many crisps I used to!
