Can’t take anymore, chronic diarrhoea for 3 weeks

WaffleDogg20 · 08/11/2024 08:35

I don’t know what to do anymore.

all started 3 weeks ago when I was on holiday in Yorkshire. I had fish and chips and that night I was in agony. The whole holiday I couldn’t leave the house as I wad diarrhoea every 5-10 mins with such urgency. I pooed the bed multiple times.
i tried absolutely everything, 10s of Imodium, gut health stuff, liquid iv.. nothing. The cramping was insane.

last week it was still really bad and I couldn’t leave the house much but this week it’s gone awful again. The weight is falling off me ( a stone in 2 weeks), I can’t eat a thing and when I do it feels like it’s stuck in my stomach. The diarrhoea is with such urgency I struggle to make it in time. It’s bright yellow and gassy/greasy. The wind is horrific. I have a horrible acid taste in my throat all the time. I’m so mentally drained and exhausted. Iv barely slept longer than 30 mins a time. I’m struggling to take my kids school.

im waiting for the doctor to ring me but when I rang them the first week they said there wasn’t anything they could do and to not take imodium.

im self employed and really really need to work.

im having such bad stomach cramps it feels like im in early labour. Mostly in the centre under my ribs or on my left side. But also in my back.

please help, I really don’t know what to do.

Ring the doctor again and get a poo swab done

I had campylobacter and it sounds incredibly similar
Keep taking rehydration drinks

spiritgoat · 08/11/2024 08:41

You need to explain you want it to be tested urgently because at this point it sounds like you'll need antibiotics if it's gone on for this long.
You'll already know this but stay very hydrated x

Sunshineandrainbow · 08/11/2024 08:42

Don't hold back on how bad this is. You need a sample testing.

Feel better soon

HerbalRefreshmentt · 08/11/2024 08:43

Is the wind of a terrible odor, like no other wind you've ever smelled before? This type of urgency could be a c. diiff infection that will need drugs to clear it up. I had one in June and after about five days I couldn't take it anymore - it was just liquid yellow, cramping, and THE worst most foul smells ever. Lots of urgency. The doctors are right in that you dont want to take Immodium to stop it up but you need to take something to clear up the infection itself and its normally confirmed with a stool sample.

If you are losing this much weight and likely this dehydrated you need to get to urgent care or be more insistent ASAP with your GP. Really really push the dehydration, the terrible smell, the liquidity with them and how much weight you have lost - much more of this and potential dehydration could land you in the hospital so they need to act!

Incakewetrust · 08/11/2024 08:45

With the weight you've lost, I'd go to a&e. You'll need fluids and tests xx

MiscellaneousSupportHuman · 08/11/2024 08:47

GPS usually say that in the first days as such conditions are usually self-limiting

But 3 weeks and over and you should be seen

augustusglupe · 08/11/2024 08:48

Urgent appointment at docs.
I had similar, years ago after oysters in Barbados.
I was this ill for just under 2 weeks and was a stone lighter by our flight home 😕
3 weeks is too long and you need to be seen asap.
You must be completely exhausted by now, hope you get sorted x

It’s better not to go to the hospital if it’s infectious diarrhoea.

OchAyeTheN00 · 08/11/2024 10:01

The doctor needs to do a stool sample. Bacterial causes of diarrhoea can be treated with antibiotics. Demand a test if they don’t offer it.

Antihistamine62 · 08/11/2024 10:03

Just about to say this sounds like campylobacter

WaffleDogg20 · 08/11/2024 11:32

Thank you all, still waiting for the doctor to ring. Iv got a massive headache and pain behind my eye this morning plus my tongue and hand feels like pins and needles :(

Are you drinking something like diarrolyte to replace things like sodium and potassium op? Let the gp know about all your other symptoms, you may be very dehydrated. They can check with a blood test. If you haven’t been drinking these then please get some. They also ought to check your inflammatory markers.

I hope you feel better soon.

WaffleDogg20 · 08/11/2024 12:39

Iv been drinking liquid iv x

They rang and I have to go in and see her this evening to see if I need iv fluids.

my head is so sore :(

I was going to say sounds like campylobacter to me, which is often contracted from dirty food outlets. I had something less severe than you're experiencing when I had it, but it was horrible. You sound very debilitated with it and three weeks is a long time to have it without it resolving on its own. You may well need a course of antibiotics. And it could be something else too. Be brutally honest with the doctor how bad it is. I hope you get the treatment you need.

I recently had my worst ever crohns flare. It was unreal. Having the iv fluids made me feel a whole lot better in general (didn’t help the stomach, but at least the rest of me didn’t feel on deaths door any more). Hopefully it will help you a bit too. I needed potassium supplements for a while after too.

I hope they can pinpoint the problem and get you sorted out soon. It’s miserable running to the loo constantly😔 💐

The doctor needs to do a stool sample.

They really do. Campylobacter is notifiable, the authorities are supposed to investigate where it came from. I sympathise, I got it three years ago, at one point it was very much like yours and my digestion hasn't been the same since. It also might not have been the fish and chips to blame but any one of the other meals you ate within the projected incubation period.

I've heard nothing yet, I'm immunocompromised and had 10 days of a 40c temp, headache and diarrhoea like nothing I've had before
People say food poisoning sometimes for a day of an upset stomach but this was every 30 mins for days on end
A&E said it's really nasty but the antibiotics cleared it up luckily and I'm taking probiotics now

buffyspikefaith · 08/11/2024 13:50

Oh and it was bright yellow/orange, lost 17lbs with it

WaffleDogg20 · 08/11/2024 14:04

thank you,

im going this afternoon. I had some food at 1 for the first time in 2 days and just been sick. The minute anything hits my stomach I feel so sick and feels like I’m going to poo myself. I’m so fed up because I’m hungry :(

harriettenightingale · 08/11/2024 14:28

Yes I had that for ages after, just the act of eating would trigger needing the loo immediately. I hope you get some help, it's miserable Flowers

Bobkite · 08/11/2024 15:20

So sorry OP, that sound utterly miserable. Absolutely demand they take you seriously. If you were a dog, they'd have already had you in on a drip!

OchAyeTheN00 · 08/11/2024 16:59

Not good enough! You need to know the cause so you can have the right treatment.

Incakewetrust · 08/11/2024 17:45

I hope you're getting sorted now! Really you should be admitted to hospital xx

Papergirl1968 · 08/11/2024 17:56

I had three weeks of awful watery yellow diarrhoea in the summer, including not being able to make it to the bathroom in time, plus a bit of projectile vomiting.
Did a stool sample and had lots of GP appointments and they put it down to viral gastroenteritis. There was talk of me having to have an IV drip but it wasn’t needed in the end.
I didn’t really lose any weight though surprisingly, maybe a couple of lbs.

Dunk19 · 08/11/2024 18:16

You poor thing, you must be feeling so weak. I hope they have taken it seriously and getting the help you need now.
