Flu vaccine side effects or something else?

Hi all.
I had the flu vaccination on Monday morning and began to feel ill on Tuesday, suffering with fatigue, waves of nausea and a pounding headache. Unfortunately, I've continued to feel ill all week, although from Wednesday onwards, it's been fatigue and nausea. As I write this, I'm still feeling rough. Is it normal to feel like this for so long?
During the week, I've also developed a trapped nerve in my shoulder and arm, which just adds to the misery.

The flu jab doesn’t usually cause such severe side effects, no. They’re usually mild. Have you had the flu jab before?

NTstar · 18/10/2024 19:27

Littlesparklystar
Yes, I've had the flu jab several times before without any problems.

I know two people who have had similar reactions this time. I am wondering if the jab is slightly different this year.

Mine is booked and I am usually in favour of all jabs but am rethinking this one.

outdamnedspots · 18/10/2024 19:43

I've had the flu jab and Covid jab on same day. All fine.

It's worth having the jab for almost everyone, I'd say. If you react to the jab, won't you react much worse to having flu?!

NTstar · 18/10/2024 19:44

Did the two people that you know experience the similar symptoms for the same length of time?
How long did it take for them to get over it?

The more elderly one more ill for about four days. The younger one ill for a couple of days, feeling like eating on day three but still a bit weak and shaky.

Both completely better now.

I agree with you I work in the care home and most of our residents do feel ill after the flu jab some for few days and some a bit longer. I only felt ill after a flu jab few years ago because I took the vaccine while I was having a cold and it took me 2 months to recover.

Scutterbug · 18/10/2024 20:44

Every time I have had the flu jab I have felt really ill for several days after, really bad headache, fever, body aches. I refuse to have it now and take my chance!

Krumblina · 18/10/2024 20:51

Could have been incubating a virus when you got the jab.

MassiveOvaryaction · 18/10/2024 20:53

Mum felt ill after hers this year (she had flu & covid jabs together) - headache/fatigue/chills/fever sort of thing. Took to her bed during the day which means she was proper poorly! She was still feeling knackered and headache-y when I spoke to her 5 days later.

User135644 · 19/10/2024 08:17

I had nausea and an unsettled stomach for a day or two after mine this week and am normally fine. Was okay to go into work but felt a bit off.

endofthecorridoor · 19/10/2024 08:31

I had terrible reaction to this years jab. 3 days exhausted achy nauseous and stomach cramps and headache and so did my dad. Mum and dh h absolutely fine. I had to take to my bed for 2 days to recover

Openup · 19/10/2024 12:54

I had both Covid & Flu jabs yesterday morning, and started to feel unwell yesterday evening and absolutely horrific by this morning with nausea, body aches and exhaustion.
I normally feel a bit ‘iffy’ for 24hrs, but this is much worse.

Fernie6491 · 19/10/2024 12:58

I had the flu jab about two weeks ago, and felt fine for a while, then by teatime I felt properly 'fluey' for the first time ever, aching all over , but the next day felt fine again, except for a sore arm where the jab went in.
BUT, I did have the covid jab on the same day. I wondered if it was the combined effects that made me feel rough.

Me too. I have a physical job and am self employed so can’t afford to be ill for a few days when I’m normally never ill.

It’s happened every time so I just won’t have it again.

NTstar · 19/10/2024 21:07

I'm starting to think that it's my anxiety flaring up. I take 10mg of citalopram and I wonder if the vaccine has caused my anxiety to mimic flu symptoms. Unfortunately at this point, I'm starting to feel it in the chest.

It's 5 days later for me and I'm definitely still feeling it. Headache, sore, achey muscles and just generally a bit off. But it's better than flu and I'll always have this vaccine.

LorettyTen · 22/10/2024 16:32

I felt like that after the Covid jab but it only lasted 2 days.
I'd suspect you picked up another virus around the same time as your flu jab happened. As others have said the after effects don't usually last so long.

Delatron · 22/10/2024 16:55

I haven’t been ill for nearly a year. There’s no way I’m getting a jab if my it knocks me out for 5 days. That’s the same as a cold.

Fallulah · 22/10/2024 17:05

I was told my covid jab was Moderna this year whereas I’ve previously only had Pfizer and Astra Zeneca. Had Covid and flu jabs yesterday and currently feel awful - temperature, headache. I had covid a few weeks ago though, which was worse, so it’s worth it to not go through that again!

Oliveoily · 22/10/2024 23:33

It hasn't knocked me out for 5 days though. I can just feel it. I'm guessing it's my immune system. My daughter had proper flu last year and had a fever for 14 days straight. I would never risk that again, it was horrible.

artant · 23/10/2024 00:19

I had my flu and Covid jabs yesterday. Had Covid a couple of weeks ago which was very mild (I only tested because I had a temperature and I look after my elderly mother). Headachey yesterday and today and the arm the Covid jab went in hurts. Can’t feel the flu side. This is my first Moderna Covid jab so I’m blaming feeling a bit rubbish in that.

Cloud44 · 23/10/2024 12:41

Yes! Having the same at the moment, starting to think it must be a general bug and not from the jab? How are you feeling now OP?

Theoldcuriosityshop · 23/10/2024 12:47

I had both on the same day, flu and Covid and had no reaction at all apart from a stiff shoulder for a few hours.

familyissues12345 · 23/10/2024 20:50

I had both on Saturday, felt pretty shite Sunday (every inch of me ached, temp, and delightfully threw up on the bathroom floor whilst having a wee)

Was back to normal by Monday morning. So better than getting Covid/Flu but I always prepare myself for at least one rotten day!
