Mirena coil users - have you gained weight?

JoshandJamie · 22/04/2008 09:51

I just can't seem to stop gaining weight despite really cutting down on food and doing exercise. Am convinced it's from the mirena coil and several of my friends have said they have the same problem. I'm going to ask my doctor to remove it but I know she's going to have a moan about it because it was only put in last Oct.

I want to know whether weight gain is a normal side effect of it.

I had mine in for a year and no weight gain here either

cmotdibbler · 22/04/2008 10:03

Have had them for a total of 7 years, and no weight gain.

Mine · 22/04/2008 10:07

i'm about to have one fitted this morning... changing from the pill to the coil beacause of weight gain. I'm hoping the coil will stop this.....

I'm watching this with interest...

squeaver · 22/04/2008 10:09

No. Can't speak highly enough of the Mirena. No bleeding at all, No pains. love it

jellybeans · 22/04/2008 10:14

Hi I gained 2 stone and got acne and had it removed (after 18 mths) but later found out I had thyroid problems which could well have caused the weight gain. I still had the acne for about 2 yrs after removal so don't think that was the mirena either. I am going to go on it again when done with babies.

Molecule · 22/04/2008 10:14

I lost 2 stone (doing Weight Watchers)after having my first fitted 7 years ago, and although I've put on half a stone subsequently that's down to sheer greed rather than the coil. As soon as I follow WW the weight comes off. Think how much you'll put on if you get pregnant.

Clary · 22/04/2008 10:38

Yes.

But in my case prob because I stuff my face

bigTillyMint · 22/04/2008 11:06

I am wondering about this too. Are you people who didn't put any weight on, natural beanpoles (well, people who do not have to be careful to keep their weight under control)?
I am a greedy pig and so can be prone to gaining weight, and also VERY hormonal - do you who already have one fitted, think the Mirena coil affects people differently, depending on that sort of thing?

cmotdibbler · 22/04/2008 11:36

The trouble is that people are happier to blame anything else that the simple equation of more calories in than burnt = fat for them putting on weight.

I don't have to be super careful about putting on weight, but am not a huge eater either.

cupcake78 · 22/04/2008 11:46

No the coil is not to blame, its just the fridge door keeps opening and food jumps in my mouth. Only its never celery its always biscuits and crisps... funny that

JoshandJamie · 22/04/2008 11:55

Well I can't blame what I eat. I'm eating far less (and drinking far less) than I was before I had the coil fitted and I'm still packing on weight.
My diet is high fibre, low gi, skimmed milk, low fat everything, no chocolate crisps or biscuity type things. It's not fair!!

Oh dear Jand J! That sounds worrying!
Ideally, I would like my DH to have the snip, but he flatly refuses as he doesn't like hospitals! It's a bit depressing to think that I am the one who has to suffer any side effects for the next ten or so years, while he gets off (literally!) scot free!
Has anyone found the other coil better? I read that it can make your periods words and mine are bad already!

BeauLocks · 22/04/2008 12:06

No weight gain here but then I don't eat much at all and am a gym bunny. My GP did say that there was so little hormone in it that weight gain was unlikely although not impossible.

How much have you put on?

SparklyPrincess · 22/04/2008 12:10

The coil hasn't had any affect on weight - any ups and down are purely down to me! As I understand it the hormone levels are so much lower than on the pill that I'd be surprised if it did.

It has made my periods ... different. Not worse, sometimes v light, the last one was heavier but I've only been on it 6 months so perhaps they're still settling down. Was bf'ing until 6 months ago too.

JoshandJamie · 22/04/2008 12:13

Not sure how much exactly I've put on - I think about 4 or 5kgs. I'm not obsessed with weight but I do get pissed off when my clothes don't fit.

My DH is getting the snip - next month. We won't be safe for a while yet though.

I agree with J&J I had mine put in in Sept and I have put on nearly a stone. Can't blame my diet as I have been in bed for 12 weeks following a major op and not been able to get to the cupboards to get to the junk! At the moment I am starving but still putting on the weight. It isn't a myth it is on the leaflet and on netdoctor as a side effect, and I was a beanpole all my life before this and am now fed up with only being able to fit in one pair of trousers!

Mine · 22/04/2008 16:30

I went to my GP this morning to discuss my options.. she said that the Mirena (sp?) coil contains hormones so you may put on weight, but the copper coil doesn't.

I'm going for the copper one!

JoshandJamie · 22/04/2008 16:30

oh thank you mumoftwo - I felt like I was the lone voice from fatland.

You are welcome J&J I am practically starving myself just stay at the weight I am now. I am seeing my Doctor this week to get the bloody thing removed .

Divastrop · 22/04/2008 16:44

its not a myth, but it doesnt affect everybody,so those who dontgain weight seem to tell those who do that they must be eating more etc(like the stupid nurse at the FPC).i gained 10lb in a week,no joke.i was bloated and my BP went up.it was removed after 3 eeks and the weight came off very quickly when my periods went back to normal.

Mine · 22/04/2008 22:25

is anyone on the copper coil??
if so, did you gain weight..?

mosschops30 · 22/04/2008 22:27

no weight gain here, weight loss but not sure if its just natural or the coil.

ingles2 · 22/04/2008 22:32

If you get a copper coil, make sure you have it changed within 3 years. I've have just had 6 months of constant bleeding and awful infections before I could have it removed. Dr has suggested a mirena but I think I'll stick with condoms for now...
