Trapped Nerve? I need advice

JustLaura · 30/09/2024 22:14

I've been having a shoulder and hip issue (both same side) for years. Some days it's far worse than others. Today it's bad.

I've had a MRI on hip years ago pre-covid and a MRI on shoulder/neck this year.

This year's MRI showed a slight issue with neck discs.
MRI on hip and spine years ago showed a common problem with lower discs in back.

I can usually cope with it on its own but today both hip and shoulder are bad.

I have been back to the GP a few times and MRI results were reiterated to me and I have been told it's likely a trapped nerve.

What can I do? I can't continue like this.

I am getting a tingly sensation from my hip to groin to front of thigh.

I am also getting tingling from my shoulder to arm and hand.

I do have other symptoms but all been put down to being Perimenopausal. Is this normal for Perimenopause?

Is this how trapped nerves feel?

Any ideas. I feel so lost.

Book in with a physiotherapist. There's exercises out there for you and treatment.

fabricstash · 30/09/2024 22:26

I had a trapped nerve in lower spine - it was so painful and had other issues. I had NHS physio and then physios switched and new one suggested accupunture which actually worked after 4 sessions. It got spine back moving and nerve free. I still remember sensation of suddenly being able to feel through my toes again a few hours after a treatment

DeliciousApples · 30/09/2024 22:27

I second getting a physio appointment. Some people swear by chiropractors or osteopaths. Up to you if you want to pay fir them or get the nhs free physio. The waiting list in my area was a good few weeks for physio.

DeliciousApples · 30/09/2024 22:28

And yeah acupuncture is brilliant. But again it's not free.

NotMeNoNo · 30/09/2024 22:31

I recently had a trapped nerve in my neck/shoulder and physio has fixed it inside a month. Maybe not as serious as yours but the exercises were well targeted.

fefoo · 30/09/2024 22:31

Find a good chiropractor, they can change your life in a really good way!

I have exactly the same.
Lower back pain and numbness or tingling down the leg.
Physiotherapy is the best route.
Try a physio before you consider osteopath.
It took many months of exercises but I did get massive improvement.
I do pilates and keep up some of the exercises.
It flares up from time to time but I know the exercises and stretches that work for me.

Thanks @Pirri

That gives me hope. I'm going to check out physio prices and have a look on YouTube for exercises.

Does your hip feel odd?
If I've been sitting in the car for a while, I can hardly walk for a couple of minutes afterwards.

Mine seems better when I'm moving?
When I sit or go to bed, then my S.I. joint feels painful and slow if that makes sense?

Thats so familiar. I'm feeling worse, think it's the cold weather. Sometimes I run a really hot bath pour in Olbas bubbles and soak. That does ease it.

Chiropractor nor osteopath could help me only stuck with physio exercises because they do help.

Weirdly the other day I was kneeling on the floor cleaning out cupboards that opened up my joints I think.

You're right to keep moving.

It definitely is worse in cold damp weather.

Actually that's spot on. I saw the phrase "opening the gap" on a physio website.
What works for me is curling up in a ball, knees to chest, so my back joints are opened.
@JustLaura I have rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis as well so it's sometimes not obvious where a problem comes from, but yes my hip sometimes hurts and it's not damaged by arthritis so could be back related.

Find a good chiropractor, they can change your life in a really good way!

Or a osteopath - they can really help in releasing a trapped nerve and provide good advice.

Having a bad day done exercises maxed out on pills done the hot bath. Lying in bed in pain from lumbar area to feet. Like the worst cramp in my legs 😢😢

Bloopy2 · 01/10/2024 17:01

I get this too. Do you have a tight piriformis muscle? I've had good relief from a sports massage but it is painful!

@justasking111 It's definitely a pain like nothing else. Does it go into your toes?

@Bloopy2 I have no idea but I will Google that and ask once I can get a call back from a physio. Thanks

@justasking111 My Mother and Grandmother suffered from scoliosis but when I asked when I had my MRI they said not?

I had an MRI for something else bowel/bladder related in 2019. The consultant pointed out my scoliosis. I nearly fell off the chair. My spine was like an upside down question mark.

Decades of back issues, chiropractor, x-ray, no-one had pointed it out before.

When I started to have trouble walking two years ago, thinking it was my hip I decided to go private. The hip pain is was caused by my spine, sciatica, L1,2,4,6, were damaged. How I carried three children without collapsing is a mystery to me. I think that I was just so active back then I overcame it with strong muscles.

Yes it goes into my toes and my instep. It's like my feet want to claw up.

@justasking111 I'll look back at my MRI to see what discs were problematic. They told me 6 out of 10 people have my issue but many don't have symptoms of it and only find out if have an MRI.

I think a major issue for me is lack of muscle so I need to get back into exercising.

When I gave birth for the last time I remember the surgeon asking for more suture. One of the other people queried it as said they had checked that ?? we're on the table. The surgeon replied "There is no tone". It's baffled me but I assume that meant there was no muscle?

Like a tingling?

Mine is more noticeable to me when I'm in bed but I don't know if that's actually the case or my mind running away with it.

I would have thought being flat and relaxed would help it - but not in my case!

I do notice it more in bed because I sleep on my stomach and my feet won't behave and relax. It's more than a tingling it's like my feet seize up painfully. Rather like when using a mouse with a laptop and your hand seizes up.

I had pins and needles in a foot a few years ago, and pain when I put my foot to the floor. I went to a podiatrist, she said I had a trapped nerve, dip a deep tissue massage omg it hurt, but worked. I usually go to an osteopath I have been going to this "family firm" for 40 years, and always one manipulation has sorted it. I trapped a nerve in my back in the summer after falling backwards on wet grass. Since we've moved the osteopath is almost 80 mile round trip,so I bought a ring cushion to sit on (I fell on my sacrum) I had an x ray, bad. Did hot and cold therapy, and ride it out. It took almost 2 months.
