Is this 'wet eczema' ?

Any ideas much appreciated. DD now 12 weeks and has had skin problems from couple of weeks. It started by redness in her creases. This first showed beind her ears at 2 weeks where they got very red then weepy with green stuff oozing out of them. This cleared on it's own. However this then progressed to neck, under arms, knees etc. Took er to gp who gave us daktacort and said he thought it was infected eczema. This cleared it initially and i thought that was the end of it however it has come back with a vengeance this week whilst we have been away. The pharmacist on holiday wouldn't give us daktacort for a young baby. So any ideas before i take her back to gp on Mon would be much appreciated.
Can you use daktacort long term ?

My dd got pretty nasty infected eczema at a similar age. It was red and weeping (although not green) and it spread all over her body. She had to take a course of anti-biotics to clear it up. We've managed to keep it under control with good management since then and it hasn't ever flared up as bad again.

the only reason i know it's green is the marks on her vest under her arms where it's worst. We are back home now so have been putting daktacort back on but how can i stop it keep flaring up, do i need ab's if it 's still in her system ?

I'm no medical expert, but I don't think the cream will help if it's a strep infection- you'll need oral ABs. I would definately take her to a doctor as soon as you can.

my dd has ongoing since birth scabby often oozing behing her ears after 2.5 years, after finally having enough of feeling fobbed by gp's everytime I mentioned it. I took her to see a diff gp when it was at it's worst via emergency appt, got oral ab's for skin infections, and canasten HC (anti fungal and steroid) and hurrah they've finally healed up.

So go back to gp's urgently

lilyloo · 19/04/2008 22:08

ok thanks will get her to docs asap if you don't mind me asking how did you keep lo's from getting it again ?

I found organic sunflower oil with added vitamin E very very very good. It's used for baby massage and very similar to natural skin oil.

Izzywhizzy · 19/04/2008 22:11

By religiously doing the following:

  • Only dressing her in natural fibres (except wool)
  • Using aqueous cream instead of soap and emmoilient in the bath
  • greasing her up several times a day with either 50/50 cream or Doublebase
  • Letting her have as much naked time as possible

Her's has got a lot better during winter. I don't know whether it's going to come back once the weather starts warming up again (if it ever does).

lilyloo · 19/04/2008 22:12

thanks for all your help will try and get her seen tom and get a grip of it.
It does seem to be spreading but felt like i was over reacting when i saw gp last time.
She is so placid but does cry when i try and clean under her arms will ask for ab's.

does dekacort contain cortisone? If so you need to taper as you come off any steroid. It took me ages to get ds1 off steroids. I had to go form a strong steropid, to 1% to 0.5% to 0.5% every other day, then every third day then once a week to get off.

If you don't taper you can end up with rebound where it all flares up again.

emma1977 · 19/04/2008 22:14

Sounds as though she has bacterial infection in the eczema and may need antibiotics.

I suggest that you get her seen by out of hours GP tomorrow.

I also find that some we start to get diminished marginal returns with treatments. So the 50/50 will work really well for a while and then won't seem to work, so we'll swap to doublebase for a while, etc.

I agree with MMJ- it's totally individual. You have to go through a bit of trial and error to find the regime that suits best.

The Eczema Society has a useful website [www.eczema.org]

CarGirl · 19/04/2008 22:18

one of my other dc has classic excema and most of the normal creams they give you made it far worse, a lot of trial and error involved.

yurt1 · 19/04/2008 22:20

Gosh do you still get 50/50? Where? (used that years ago thought it was fabulous stuff).

GP's are crap at passing that info on lilyloo but you really need to taper with steroids, really important. I struggled as we tried to go from a strong steroid (can;t remember its name now) straight to 0.5% HC, but it didn't work; we needed to add a 1% HC bit in.

lilyloo · 19/04/2008 22:20

Sounds like a long process, guess i just need to get it under control though at the min can it spread to nappy area as she has it on the top of her thighs but her nappy area looked red today ?

OP posts:
emma1977 · 19/04/2008 22:20

Daktacort contain antifungal and hydrocortisone which is a very weak steroid. Weak steroids don't usually need tapering off slowly for safety reasons.

As TMMJ says, there is no 'cure' for eczema, the aim of treatment is to keep it under control. Some children don't rebound straight after the creams are stopped if the eczema is mild, however some unfortunately do and he eczema can become recurrent.

Izzywhizzy · 19/04/2008 22:23

Yes, it can spread to nappy area. My dd's infection was all over her body, poor little mite. Her little, chubby neck was absolutely covered in it.

The ABs can be a bit difficult to get down them, but try and persevere. Once the infection is cleared up, you'll be able to work on the management side of things.

Yurt- got the 50/50 on prescription from my GPs. I've got great big tubs of it all round the house.
