Bleeding after diarrhoea

FigsAndFerns · 08/09/2024 19:17

My husband had explosive diarrhoea last night and vomited once. He’s feeling better today but is now passing squirts of blood… he feels an urge to go, hourly or so, and then nothing but blood comes out.

We’re currently waiting for a call back from 111.
Could this be caused by an infection or blood poisoning? He doesn’t have a fever but has discomfort in his lower abdomen (no more cramps).

Your poor husband. Food poisoning such as campylobacter can cause blood. What did 111 advise?

Covidwoes · 08/09/2024 19:19

Apologies, just saw the time of your post, so you won't have heard back from 111 yet! If he goes pale, faint, dizzy etc, go to A&E.

FigsAndFerns · 08/09/2024 19:23

We’re still waiting for the call back. He doesn’t feel very ill, just tired and under the weather as you’d expect after feeling so unwell last night.
But I am worried he’s still passing blood.

JulietSierra · 08/09/2024 19:25

I had this with campylobacter. I needed antibiotics to clear it so it’s definitely worth getting checked out.

Swissrollover · 08/09/2024 19:29

Might he have piles that have been exacerbated by the diarrhoea?

Covidwoes · 08/09/2024 19:31

@JulietSierra, me too! I never found out what food caused me to have it.

FigsAndFerns · 08/09/2024 19:32

He’s had piles in the past but the blood isn’t mild streaks but more extreme. Quite alarming to pass nothing but blood. But maybe it’s a possibility…

OP posts:
FigsAndFerns · 08/09/2024 19:38

For those with the food poisoning, did you pass significant amounts of blood?

OP posts:
WetWeasel · 08/09/2024 19:40

If he is just passing blood, no poo

He needs to go to the hospital

Do not wait for 111

JulietSierra · 08/09/2024 19:59

I was passing liquid stools which were completely red. I guess it wasn’t all blood but looked most alarming!!

givemeanother · 08/09/2024 20:01

Agree he should go to hospital. My husband had this as a precursor to major bleed that needed hospital treatment. We needed an ambulance when that happened, and if ever in that position again we'll go to hospital at first sign.

Swissrollover · 08/09/2024 20:02

As someone who very frequently has passed just blood and no poo, I think you should wait for 111, not go to hospital. He doesn't sound particularly unwell currently.

I have Ulcerative Colitis and even prior to diagnosis, passing large volumes of blood whilst alarming, has never warranted urgent care. If his other symptoms were alarming, then I would be more concerned.

This is such dangerous advice and it should not be allowed on a site like this !!!

You have NO IDEA what this is

Blood coming out every hour with no good reason even while feeling ‘ok’ IS warrant for A&E

Or they should continue to wait for the medical advice from 111 who didn't immediately arrange an ambulance or urge them to attend A&E. It isn't unexplained bleeding considering the history of explosive diarrhoea and piles.

There was another poster offering very blasé advice recently re. bleeding from the bottom because they have UC and it’s normal for them. Maybe the same person.

Either way: passing blood is not something to be blasé about if the person in question does not have UC but is instead showing signs of a nasty infection.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/09/2024 20:53

I'd be wanting a stool sample, at the least, to make sure it isn't such as E coli 0157, where there would have to be some serious safety netting done for the next week or so.

FigsAndFerns · 08/09/2024 21:03

111 have advised a&e so we’re on our way now.
Thanks for the advice.

Ofcourse it is unexplained !

111 are proven to be unreliable and its because of posters like you that people dont go to hospital when they should and they get very sick

111 have advised A&E and rightly so

PLEASE REFRAIN from giving the ‘Wait at home, he’ll be fine’

It can actually cost a life !!!!!!!

FigsAndFerns · 09/09/2024 00:51

Relatively quick time at A&E… and home already. He had blood tests and they showed sign of infection but blood loss not a worry at this stage.
Hopefully it will all settle quickly. If he’s still losing blood in 3 days they’ll do further investigations.
Thanks for your messages and advice. A rocky couple of days … can safely say that food poisoning taking hold at the cinema (when you’re hemmed in against a wall at the end of a full row - of course) is not the best!

Swissrollover · 09/09/2024 06:18

Glad that following 111 was the right course of action and that at this stage all seems likely to pass quickly. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Posters hysterically urging A&E unnecessarily is why they are full of people who don't need to be there. It is likely that this would have been a GP recommendation had it not been a Sunday night. 111 was entirely appropriate as proven.

So if Having a urge to poo and just blood coming out every hour isnt an A&E job then i am at a loss

Ok, THIS time he didnt need to be admitted
But 111 (A DOCTOR) sent him to A&E ?
Because there was no way of knowing what the reason for the bleeding was

It wasnt a stubbed toe

The NHS is broken but trust me it is NOT because of people like the OP’s Husband

I suggested that they follow the medical advice, which was to wait for the doctor to call back. 111 had already performed a triage and advised this.

People are rightly alarmed by blood and should seek immediate medical care, but having already done this and been assessed by 111 as not in immediate danger and not requiring immediate A&E, it was considered safe to wait for the DOCTOR to assess. NOT to just turn up at A&E as people were hysterically urging.

A&E apparently gave no treatment and said to give it another 3 days of potentially pooing blood hourly, so I'm still not sure why I'm attracting such outrage for suggesting they wait for the DOCTOR to call back.

I was pooing pure blood between 8 and 25 times a day for 2 weeks, with no A&E or hospital admission. I saw my GP who referred me to Gastro, who I saw almost immediately, but I had to wait 2 weeks before my colonoscopy date with no treatment in the interim. (Private care, not NHS, as the wait was over 9 months!) It was tough, especially as I was breastfeeding a 2 month old baby and was still recovering from the c-section.

I again wish the OP's husband a speedy recovery, so it is likely a passing food poisoning episode rather than the lifelong condition I have. I never said OP's husband was breaking the A&E system. The 111 system worked and he was directed there on medical advice, which OP waited a reasonable time for.

I'm personally at a loss about the lack of comprehension skills shown on MN 🤦‍♀️.

It has nothing to do with comprehension skills and i find your post rather insulting

It does not matter that you was in a similar situation at all - It does not mean that just because you were ok , that meant that the poster husband was going to be ok too

111 advised A&E as soon as they spoke to a doctor, the wait was not that long, 111 is a service where you have to WAIT
and it goes on answers from a computer screen, you arent actually assessed straight away from a doctor. So the wait was procedure
AND for your information 111 is not always correct
111 sometimes does not call back and VERY often gives you the wrong info / wrong diagnosis
I know on one occasion they said i was ok and was waiting a call back which ended up withe talking to 2 nurses and 3 doctors and then while i was STILL waiting for a call back my partner luckily had the sense to drag me to the car, where i was admitted into hospital and nearly died
The 111 call back came the next day and the ‘answer’ was, give it afew days, it will pass
So excuse me while i do not trust 111 and the service it provides.
Asking questions that a computer tells you and putting you in a Q is inadequate and dangerous ‘health’ care in my opinion

Again, this is not the same medical problem as you have and someone else losing blood isnt always going to be ok just because you survived

So in future i actually think that you shouldnt be advising people to stay home as you know nothing about them
It could actually be a medical emergency and someones life could be at risk
