Anyone had their wisdom teeth out?

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 17:40

I had all four taken out on Tuesday. I can still barely open my mouth, my tongue is numb, and there is a dubious taste in my mouth. I am still eating soup through a straw. Anyone have any idea when I might start to feel more human?

took me 2 weeks to get back to normal and one side of my tongue is still numb 7n yrs on but cannot notice it as much anymore does take a while to get back to normal as jaw is crammed for ages to take teeth out hope you feel better soon

Lucycat · 18/04/2008 17:46

ooh poor you - it's horrible isn't it? You have all my sympathy.
I had all 4 of mine out when i was 16 and all I can remmeber is my friends laughing at me for having a face like a hamster for about a week, terrible bruising on my chest where the surgeon had leant to pull them out and that nasty taste.

I'd say you've got another few days yet....good for weight loss though

madamez · 18/04/2008 17:49

Ten days to a fortnight before you feel normal again. Had mine out at the age of 19, still remember it, eugh - and here are my top tips.

Plastic cutlery feels less scary on a tender mouth.
Have your food/soup/puree warm, not hot and not too cold
Glycerine of thymol (sp?) mouthwash, mildly antiseptic, much less nasty than salt water.
Plenty of paracetamol/aspirin/painkiller of choice
And if you are going out of the house, particularly if it's as horriblly cold as it has been today, wrap a scarf or shawl round your head because the cold wind on your face will hurt.

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 17:55

Oh no!! All the bumpf said I'd be better in a couple of days, which I thought was a trifle optimistic. I hate not being able to eat, makes me really grouchy. I have been looking enviously at ds' mush. And I take it leaving my tongue firmly in the middle of my mouth, not venturing to gaping holes either side, is best course of action?

don't eat rice or other 'little' food for a while yet. Agree, couple of weeks after the op and you'll be fine. There's strange things I couldn't do for a while like blow candles out. So I hope it's not your birthday

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 17:59

No birthdays, but ds thinks I'm in a bad mood cos I can't blow raspberries . Any food suggestions would also be appreciated - sick of soup and mash. And when do I get to drink wine again?

Lauriefairycake · 18/04/2008 18:01

I had two out and was ok in about 3 days.

Bugger eating by the way - if ever there was an excuse for wine or vodka jellies this is it

ClareVoiant · 18/04/2008 18:06

you have my sympathy. I also had all 4 out in hospital, they were impacted, was a good 3-4 weeks before i could open my mouth all the way. my friend visited me in hospital nad bought me toffees, black jacks and fruit salads had mine out the week before christmas many years ago now. took me ages to eat food, had it cut really small, and had to keep microwaving it, as it would go cold. avoid peas, cos theyre a real bugger to remove from the holes, i had one stuck for a few days . i don't remember drinking to be a problem, especially with the codeine

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 18:10

lol at blackjacks. And, sorry to harp on, how long do the holes take to heal? I haven't even dared investigate that aspect yet

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth out 20 years ago - I think it took a couple of weeks for me to be able to open my mouth properly. I can certainly remember having to melt chocolate in my desperation to get it between my unyielding teeth !

ClareVoiant · 18/04/2008 18:27

they heal reasonably quickly, 2-3 weeks, but you still have indents for a while to trap food. for me it was my jaw that took longest.i think they must have clamped it like the 'flip top head' man from the toothbrush advert.

Cammelia · 18/04/2008 18:30

It does take a couple of weeks to feel totally normal. Mainly from the jaw manipulation they do.

Must say having all 4 out at once was rather stupid very brave of you

MrsWeasley · 18/04/2008 18:32

I had 1 out in february and can still remember the dreadful taste in my mouth Yuck

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 18:45

Cammelia, the dentist surgeon said I should have them all out, as they were all buggers, and at least this way I was asleep for it. And didn't have to pay the /nhS dentist for the privelege. Not bravery or stupidity - more like tight-fistedness!

I had two out at a time in a chair with local anaesthetic, the injections were very deep and very painful. But I was eating normally again after 3 or 4 days but was careful to keep the sockets clean. The taste of blood lasted 3 or 4 days too.

General consensus amongst my friends is that if you have it done with only a local, you will suffer much less jaw ache (because you're watching the dental surgeon). If you have a GA, they wrench your teeth out with more force than precision!

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 18:49

I've checked, there is no bruising on my chest, thank heavens.

know how your feeling i had 4 wisdoms out 5 years ago most of which were impacted so had stitches in my mouth aswell .i had a general anestetic and was scared witless when i woke up in recovery coz my mouth was rammed full of wadding to stem the bleeding(they didnt tell me about that)face looked twice its normal size and the only thing i ate was macaroni cheese.my head hurt more than my mouth strangley .was better within two weeks and now im so glad i had it done because the infections that they were giving me were fay worse that the op itself. the only negative i had was a clicky jaw if i yawned and when chewing but that has stopped now

madamez · 18/04/2008 20:55

Oh I heard the thing about avoiding a general if possible and had all 4 of mine out with a local... and a Valium injection. Which is quite enjoyably hallucinogenic, only the anasthetic wore off as they took the last tooth out (after more than 20 years typing that still sends a bit of a chill down my spine).

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 20:58

Madamez, wow. Hats off to you, you brave brave lady. I am too much of a wuss however, and also quite like having generals - i never drift off to sleep that well usually

OP posts:
Solitaire · 18/04/2008 20:58

Oh you have my sympathys, had mine out at 17 and got teased for the entire two weeks it took the bruising and swelling around my face to go down as I looked like a bloody chipmonk

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 21:00

Strangely, I have practically no bruising or swelling. So it's only when I try and speak and sound half-cut that people notice.

OP posts:
Solitaire · 18/04/2008 21:03

I think the dentist must have stood on my face and yank them out with pliers. God knows I was knocked out at the time. Refused valium as it does funny things to my Dad and sister (my dad thought he was 5 years old when he took it and my sister sits and cries for hours)

madamez · 18/04/2008 21:04

Actually, I am an absolute wuss and it was the dentist who insisted on the local-with-sedative. I was petrified and threatened to bite them all.

gigglewitch · 18/04/2008 21:06

2 weeks for me too last September
baby food and painkillers til then mate - then it honestly does happen reasonably magically
[she would say that she's a witch..] and you feel quite a lot better. try arnica tablets, they really help to get the bruising down.

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 21:07

I can't bear to think exactly how he got them out. Although he did pop by later to inform me he'd had to do some drilling... I think I could cope with the pain though, if only I could eat nice food and drink wine. Gah!
