Anyone had their wisdom teeth out?

I had all four taken out on Tuesday. I can still barely open my mouth, my tongue is numb, and there is a dubious taste in my mouth. I am still eating soup through a straw. Anyone have any idea when I might start to feel more human?

You poor thing! Much sympathy from me. I must admit that I had my 4 wisdom tooth taken out in GA at age 21 and it wasn't too bad. But last year I had one tooth taken out which caused me agony for days. I had a dry socket. It took ages to heal. So much sympathy from me

I had mine taken out in November and it took about a week to stop hurting and a few months for the holes to fill in. My dentist said to eat lots of icecream (she even included a voucher for a free icecream from a local shop with my antiseptic mouthwash and painkillers). I took it a bit far and ate nothing but icecream for two days but it was the only thing that didnt hurt. She also gave me a list of after surgery instructions which I can email to you if you want. They are in french and I had to translate them via babelfish so they do read amusingly but I followed every word and healed really quickly.

It's the holes, the holes. I hate the bastard holes. I do like the idea of free ice cream. We have no ice cream in the house at the moment. Feck and arse

Have you got an icepack or cold flannel you can hold to your cheek? I also got given an antiseptic mouthwash to use and was told to take the painkillers as they help with swelling and puffiness. I am just checking the instructions and she said nothing hot or warm in the mouth, no tea, coffee, alcohol or smoking. No hot baths, saunas or sunbeds, sneeze with an open mouth, soft cold food after three or four days. Basically I had a really miserable few days but it was worth it as after a week I was fine (about from the excess weight gain from having eaten three full boxes of icecream )

I had 4 out at the dentists (under anaesthetic) and had one day off work, then went back only slightly puffy. Back to normal completely within a week. Hope you recover soon.

i had 2 out and was fine after 2 days

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 21:32

Milliways, you're the quickest recoverer yet, and you have given me hope. DingALongCow, bugger. Have just had a hot bath, in the absence of anything else fun to do with my evening. And it's my last two weeks of maternity leave.... sob!

I had 3 out, nearly 14 years ago now. The holes were a real pain - I got a sort of blunt syringe from the dentist to squirt salt water into them to keep them clean. They do fill in after a while, but keeping them clean is important.

I'm sorry about the numb tongue - the right side of my jaw was numb, and it still feels different even after all this time. Much better than it was, but still not perfect. There are important nerves running through the jaw which can be damaged, or even completely severed when they pull the teeth. They gave me a form to fill in just before the op, to say they'd warned me about nerve damage as a possible side-effect. If I'd had longer to think about it, I wouldn't have gone through with it, but my parents had come down for a few days to look after the baby and I felt I couldn't back out. If I had it to do over, I would only have had the one out undfer a local, not 3 and a general.

Top tips:

Do NOT swill neat whisky around your mouth thinking it will have an anaesthetic effect.

Do NOT eat rice or other small foodstuffs for at least a month, or be prepared to have an expression as though you are in training for the local gurning contest as you try to get it out of the holes with your tongue.

Do NOT think it will take any less than 2 weeks to feel "normal" again, otherwise you will disappoint yourself, and this does not set yourself up well, psychologically speaking.

13 years later, I feel fine!

gigglewitch · 18/04/2008 21:40

listen, TF. I can really recommend this lot...
babysitters - as many as offer
lavender pillow no idea why but it stopped me feeling sicky
chlorhexidine mouthwash (but only for a couple of weeks max) if hospital has suggested it
ice cream
salt water mouthwashes
bottle of red wine with straw
codeine 30mg tablets [but not swilled down with the red wine]
arnica tablets [think i've already said that. losing marbles]

thetoothlessfairy · 18/04/2008 21:45

Ok, this is good. I have a plan (buy ice cream) and a timescale (two weeks). And I shall continue to ignore the bloody holes.

I had my 2 bottom ones out by local anesthetic a couple of years ago. The dental surgeon promised me 20 minutes from start to finish and succeeded. This was private so they offered me a lovely meal soon after which I couldn't eat

Luckily dh was there and could !!

Regarding the sockets, I was told on no account to clean them or gargle because the blood clots were part of the healing process and when people wash them away there is a significant risk of infection.

I had one impacted wisdom tooth taken out in November and even that took about a week to feel better. However it felt very sore and was bleeding a bit so I went back to the hospital and it turned out that one of the stitches was pinching the skin and constantly irritating it, once that was snipped out it healed up. Off work for 4 days and had some smashing bruising down my neck.

I really feel for you, you will be better soon but it takes a while. (((hugs)))
