Right, what are the strongest painkillers I can demand from my GP tomorrow morning?

This is the 6 millionth night I've been up - can't sleep for more than a few hours at a time and am in constant pain from my sodding lumpy neck and sore throat.

Have got a GP appointment at 8.40am and am thinking of staging a sit in, as the GP I saw on Monday told me to keep taking paracetamol and brufen but they're making no effing difference.

WAIL... I'm not getting better and it's been Too Long now.

ooh - I remember taking those after my c-section - good combined with diflenac I seem to remember (very hazily...).

Thanks. I'm utterly crap with pain and could cope with the not swallowing and high temp as long as I wasn't in so much flipping agony.

No, they wouldn't give me any because it's only a sodding virus.

Well I've had lots of viruses before but none that have felt like this.

Am a bit worried I'm going to crumble at the GP's and cry everywhere

What about co-proxamol? A friend of mine has these for severe back pain, they seem pretty hard core!

Dottydot · 18/04/2008 01:49

thanks - am making a mental list and will not leave GP alone until I get the drugs

Oh no, Dotty. I was hoping you were feeling better.

I think crying at the Dr is a good idea. Guilt her into giving you something that works

pucca · 18/04/2008 01:50

Another good one is dihydrocodine, this is what i was given after my section.

Just put your foot down, and ask for either of these, or if not i have heard that paramol iirc over the counter is quite good, and pretty strong.

Hope you feel better soon, nothing worse than a really bad throat i get tonsilitus quite alot and it is hell.

pucca · 18/04/2008 01:51

Infact paramol which you can get striahgt from the chemist is dihydrocodine and paracetamol mixed...so sounds promising.

info here

pucca · 18/04/2008 01:51

straight i meant of course! lol

Dottydot · 18/04/2008 01:52

Hi again UR (feel like I can call you UR after this week!).

No, I'm feeling like crap and without sleep for nearly a week - it's worse than having a newborn...

Am also worried I won't be well enough to go back to work next week. I usually work round the clock and am horribly behind, but I'm so knackered during the day there's no way I'd be up to going. And I know it's sad, but I love work.

OP posts:
Dottydot · 18/04/2008 01:53

Right - so if I get no joy from GP, I can get paramol. It's on the list...

It's very frustrating being ill and knowing that you are getting behind on work.

Anything with codeine in it should help.

girlfrommars · 18/04/2008 02:13

You can take aspirin and paracetemol. Sometimes gargling with soluble aspirin helps.

I had the flu + a tonsil infection over Christmas so I know how shitty it can be . Ice cubes or honey and hot water helped a little.

Hope you get some stun an ox strength painkillers in the morning.

Dottydot · 18/04/2008 02:23

Girlfrommars - that's exactly what I'll ask for.

In fact I'm ready to capture an ox (they roam free in Stockport), haul it in to the GP and make them stun it with painkillers so I know they're good ones.

I know, I really should go to bed...

Dottydot · 18/04/2008 09:09

FFS - I am so crap. Have come out with antibiotics and soluble aspirin.

I'm useless.

And there was no mention of glandular fever (sulk).

cocolepew · 18/04/2008 09:13

I've a a bad throat all week. Couldn't swallow at all at the weekend and by monday my throat was bleeding. Got antibiotics on monday and by Tuesday could swallow again. Hopefully they will work for you.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/04/2008 09:18

Another vote for codeine, it does work, and will help you sleep - you can get it (mixed with paracetamol) from the chemist, although you do have to ask for it.

MegSophandEmma · 18/04/2008 09:18

solpadol (same as Kapake) are good. Sounds like same thing I had Dotty a couple of weeks back. It hurt inside the left side of my troat and my ear when I swallowed. Was excruciating. Which was found out to be tonsiltous. I had to use solpadol.

gagarin · 18/04/2008 09:20

Gargle with soluble aspirin - it works a treat with throats

HereComeTheGirls · 18/04/2008 10:23

yes, solpadeine helped me SO much when I got my tonsils out. It is like kapake but not nearly as strong. You should definitely get some solpadeine and try gargling with it!

cocolepew · 18/04/2008 11:53

If you're having trouble sleeping Syndol might help it's a painkiller but it can make you drowsy.

Blandmum · 18/04/2008 11:55

Well, you could demand morphine, but I don't think you'll get it!

sorry if it has been advised before but have you used the full dose of paracetamol and ibuprofen (unless you are asthmatic)?

cocolepew · 18/04/2008 11:59

Oh and rub Vicks over your throat. Vicks cures everything.
Fact.

Dottydot · 18/04/2008 12:53

MB - I think I've been having more than the full dose of paracetamol + brufen - 1000mg/400mg every 4 hours

Well the soluble aspirin seems to be helping but I might try a knockout painkiller for tonight to help me sleep.

I've never been on so many MN threads and am making good friends with the American MNers at the moment
