I am so so so so tired ...

NotQuiteCockney · 17/04/2008 08:05

And I'm not sure why.

a) I had an op three weeks ago. I'm mostly recovered

b) it's been Easter holidays forever, no time off for me, no real exercise

c) my diet's been a bit shit

d) I think I have hayfever

So ... I have today off. I am no good at sleeping in the day. I'm wavering about going running. I deffo need to do some domestic sorting out. But do I lie still? Do I run? Run then lie still?

sorry but LOL at last 3 questions

I think the last one sounds good
hope it all improves - it is no surprise you are feeling rough

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 17/04/2008 08:09

I think that all the reasons you listed could be why you're tired

Not being a runner myself, I can't really comment on the running, but I do know that if you lie down all day you will feel sorry for yourself and won't actually feel any better, whereas if you get on with it, you will probably feel ok for the majority of the day.

So I would have a run, then a lie down. And get an early night if you can.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/04/2008 09:08

Yeah, I think I will run then lie still.

It's not really a mystery that I'm tired, is it. I keep having really involved strange dreams - last night, they wouldn't let me into my favourite club night because of the phase of the moon.

My diet's not been that bad, considering, but I've not been strict about my GI, which generally doesn't help. Actually, all three meals yesterday were respectable (cereal, then tricolore salad, then pasta w/ lots of ratatouille), so I'm not doing that bad.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 17/04/2008 18:04

I didn't run.

I didn't really have the energy to do anything today, not even shower.

I'm treating it as 'one of those things' and hoping it gets better soon. I do want to go clubbing this weekend, and have a bunch of activities planned in the next few weeks which won't be possible if I feel like this.

NQC, I know nothing about recovering from ops, and even less about running [flinch] but I am sorry you're feeling wiped out at the moment

can I go against the tide and suggest some proper rest, physically and mentally - don't think of it as 'not doing' X, Y orZ, just think of it as actively therapeutically 'doing nothing' - positive relaxation! Have you got books you've been wanting to read? Can you palm the kids off on a friend for a bit?

I know being fit is important, but if you really are drained and below par I think it can be counter-productive [speaking, wildly inappropriately, as someone who had ME/fibromyalgia and decided to try and 'push through it' with exercise)

FrannyandZooey · 17/04/2008 18:14

evening - sorry things got worse

Greeny if I thought NQC would listen I would always be telling her to rest! however running seems to keep you sane at least if a little physically dodgy doesn't it NQC?

maybe Greeny will scare you into having a rest

saltire · 17/04/2008 18:16

Have you got any more truffles greeny? i could do with some myself

I agree with what you say, try resting- even just lying on the sofa watching tv, not neccesarily going to bed (says she who would love to have gone to bed this afternoon)

CeilingCat · 17/04/2008 18:20

NQC - was it a very bloody operation? Just wondering if you could be a bit anaemic (speaking as someone who was v anaemic a couple of months ago, but is now pumped with iron and raring to go).

Greeny - I now have a yearning for dark choc truffles and novel, damn you.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/04/2008 18:21

I have been sitting on the sofa all day watching tv. The kids were with a teenager.

I might try using her again tomorrow maybe. Another day of lying still would do me a world of good. I can't believe how tired I am. Still.

Running does keep me sane, but I keep thinking, 'eh, I always want to run. If I don't feel like it, there must be a good reason for it'.

Blah.

constancereader · 17/04/2008 18:23

I was going to ask if your iron levels had been checked too. I would do this asap.

FrannyandZooey · 17/04/2008 18:24

I'm happy to sit on sofas and eat truffles for you if you prefer, NQC

because I am just kind that way

pointydog · 17/04/2008 18:29

Is it a virus?

NotQuiteCockney · 17/04/2008 19:03

I had my iron levels checked before the op. They were fine. I don't think iron levels are the problem. I think I am just worn out.

I'm not sure 'sitting on the sofa and eating truffles' is the sort of task that can be delegated. Although my appetite is a bit buggered up, too.

Whatever happened to CONVALESCING after an operation????

Running?? Are you serious???

How about a gentle walk then a snooze?

Poor you - I have no idea what your op was, but I hope you feel better soon.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/04/2008 19:09

I have already gone running since the op. And biking. It was a tear duct thing, not that big an op, I was only under for an hour.

I went running 1.5 weeks after, and again last weekend. But last weekend was crazy busy (clubbing at night and in the day) lots going on, and the kids have been off for weeks, and it all seems to have become a bit too much for me.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 18/04/2008 08:50

Still tired today. Have unloaded DS2 from 9am to 2pm (DS1 is at school). So that will have to do. I'm coughing up some ugh, so there seems to be a few things going on here. Will try to lie still this morning.

OP posts:
3littlefrogs · 18/04/2008 16:08

Did you have a general anaesthetic? If so, that is enough to require a reasonable period of rest and recovery - a GA is quite a physiological assault and not to be taken lightly IMO.

I hope you will be feeling better soon. Are you doing your deep breathing and coughing exercises? Very important after a GA.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/04/2008 17:44

I did have a GA. But it was 3 weeks + 2 days ago now. What deep breathing and coughing exercises?

OP posts:
constancereader · 18/04/2008 18:00

Have just remembered that I felt knackered for ages after each GA I had (seven in two years).

3littlefrogs · 18/04/2008 18:01

They are to make sure your lungs get fully expanded so that you don't get a chest infection after having the anaesthetic. Very old fashioned probably, but if you are coughing stuff up, it wouldn't do you any harm.

It is really just making sure that every hour or so you take some deep breaths, stretch your arms up and out, move your shoulders etc and have a bit of a cough. Any stuff that is down there will come up - (sorry if TMI).

If you have had a tube stuck down your throat and gases pumped into your lungs for an hour, it isn't surprising that you need to recover a bit.

Also, lots of hot drinks are good - helps to make the stuff in your chest easier to cough up. Sorry - a bit graphic - hope nobody is eating their tea.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/04/2008 18:04

I wasn't allowed hot drinks for 48 hours after the op, for fear the steam would go up my nose and cause a bleed.

OP posts:
3littlefrogs · 18/04/2008 18:09

But you have them now , (or even after the 48 hours were up).

FrannyandZooey · 18/04/2008 18:51

NQC sounds like you need an all round rest

hope coughing passes quickly

NotQuiteCockney · 18/04/2008 19:13

I don't really like hot drinks. I should give them a go.

I don't think the op has too much to do with this, I did feel 100%, well, 90% anyway, the other week. I was ok on Saturday and Sunday, but had a really mad weekend, and as of Monday was just exhausted. But I still did quite a bit on Monday and Tuesday, and found myself totally dead at the end of the day.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 19/04/2008 08:20

Ok, yesterday I started feeling feverish and having joint pain. Which is, tbh, an improvement. Because at least it is a new symptom. I no longer feel bone-crushingly tired. I'm still tired, but not as bad.

This morning I actually feel ok. I might have a hot drink and see if it helps. I meant to have a lie in, but DS2 woke with damp pj bottoms (but not a damp bed) at 6:30. And I suck at sleeping in anyway.
