Anyone had a Bartholin cyst removed?

Haaaaaaan · 18/08/2024 22:11

I have one, 3cm diameter, which is mildly uncomfortable. I have the choice to have it removed, likely under general anaesthetic, or to leave it.

Has anyone had one? Did you have it removed and how did that go?

Have you tried hitting it with a Bible? It's the traditional, non-medical method of attempting removal.

I'm pretty sure you mean a ganglion cyst not a Bartholin cyst - or at least I hope so 😂😂😂

Urgh2302 · 18/08/2024 22:32

I’d one burst, which I do not recommend.

Haaaaaaan · 18/08/2024 22:36

I don't own a bible and I'm not sure you'd want to return a book to lender after doing that

I’ve currently got one and considering stabbing it with a needle as it’s not bursting on its own (any tips welcome!)

Tbh if someone medical was offering to remove it, I’d 100% say yes at the moment!

Haaaaaaan · 18/08/2024 22:43

No it sounds awful...I've asked for it to removed because knowing non urgent nhs care it'll be 2 years waiting anyway. Just curious really as online NHS info and consultant didn't really give the same answers. I got the impression he wanted me to leave it but it is a huge lump unlikely to go unless it ends painfully in infection or bursting...

Haaaaaaan · 18/08/2024 22:47

@Spitalfieldrose well his words when he said they'd contact me about booking in were "it might be a while" and given they operate on cancers and NHS backlogs I imagine it will be forever. Have you had yours long, does it bother you and did the GP not refer you to a gynaecologist like mine did?

OP posts:
Spitalfieldrose · 18/08/2024 22:57

This one is the worst one I’ve had for a while (it’s huge and hurts so much!) and I’ve had it about 3 weeks. But I seem to be getting them pretty frequently either side and not just one spot either. The GP wasn’t that interested I got a ‘it’s probably your age’ as I’m 52 and just to follow the NHS advice. So yet another menopausal issue maybe?

I’m actually impressed that they have sent you anywhere near a gyne for it! But you’re right it probably will take forever, I’d get on the list in case it decides to get worse. Hopefully it will just go on its own, all my other ones have even if it’s taken a few months.

Haaaaaaan · 19/08/2024 20:44

@Spitalfieldrose oh that's rubbish I'm sorry, if it's painful I'd go back to the GP and be difficult, although you're probably right it'll go before they get round to doing anything.

Thanks for your message, I was wondering if it might just go away. I had a baby a year ago and it popped up in the months after that so it's been around a long time already!

Excellent idea

Growsomeballswoman · 19/08/2024 20:54

Why would anyone want to whack their private parts with a bible? I'm not god fearing but crikey I'm sure that's wrong.

Haaaaaaan · 19/08/2024 20:54

Ive now seen there's loads of previous threads about bartholins cysts, it seems that treatment received differs hugely with some people taken in for immediate surgery and others in pain ignored for years, and a large number of "DIY" poppers, which I was told not to do!

EwwSprouts · 19/08/2024 20:54

Sit in a hot bath for a very long time, every night. I've had one twice and that did draw the pus out after a few days. Both times I'd been to gynae outpatients and given antibiotics.

Smeshier · 19/08/2024 20:57

Hot bath. Lots of pressure. Its AMAZING!! I get them a couple of times a year.

🤣 true! But image of OP bashing a big book against Bartholin cyst has given me the biggest laugh today 🤣

If it is going to be years then maybe revisit the bible idea?

Sorry, I am sure its painful and I hope you get sorted soon

Tristar15 · 19/08/2024 21:17

I’m waiting to see if I’ll get on the list for removal. Had it for 2 years and it is painful and going nowhere! Appointment in autumn to hopefully get things moving.

I think this should come with a “please don’t try this at home” warning. 😂😂

Haaaaaaan · 19/08/2024 21:21

The logistics of the bible...... Definitely for ganglion cysts not Bartholin!

I think a lot of people end up with infections, I was warned about that. Otherwise there's no reason to take antibiotics as they won't do anything!

It's not painful although it bothers me a bit so for now I will see how that waiting list goes and make a decision if removal is offered or if it gets painful!

I recently spent 3 hours in a hot tub at 40° so I'm not sure hot water is that magic for me!

OP posts:
halfshutknife · 19/08/2024 21:43

Could you make a bread/milk poultice? A flannel as hot as you can tolerate for 30 mins then a bread poultice on a sanitary towel? Or is it proper proper internal?

courtyardofhope · 19/08/2024 21:51

Sympathies op
I have had one before and think I have a non painful returner
Bit of a cotton wool pad and very hot water helped reduce its size

BeADinosaur · 19/08/2024 21:58

I've had 3 removed by surgery; drained and marsupialisation. Was told after each surgery I'd never get another.

Then got another and had a word catheter fitted. Was told I DEFINITELY wouldn't get another.

Had one more removed by surgery. This one was just sliced and diced in a side room under local because the hospital was a trauma hospital and there was a terrorist attack so all the operating rooms were full.

Had a few more since then, but I catch them early and get antibiotics so they don't get big enough to need surgery.

Sitz baths are meant to help, though they never did with me. Sitting on a hot water bottle for hours did help, it burst by itself, which while grotesquely unattractive, was preferable to surgery.

Last time I had one, the Dr said it was the biggest she had ever seen, but it was the smallest one I ever had!

I literally feel your pain, I hope you get it sorted, whatever your method!

fridaynight1 · 19/08/2024 22:01

I had one removed under general anaesthetic when I was 19. They packed it with gauze and I had the dressing changed every day until it was healed. I'm 60 next week and I've not had another one since. If they are giving you the option to have it removed - I would go for it.

Cellotapedispenser · 19/08/2024 22:40

I am not a good example but I have some lab experience and a set of dissection knives. Mine got to 5cm. So I did a diy job (lots of alcohol and boiled water), most amazing sporn ever. I did twist the knife a bit to ensure an irregular scar to prevent it forming again. Never had one again, whereas when the hospital did it I got one almost immediately. I don't recommend it if you're of faint heart though.
