Daughter is gone 14 and no period

Just wondering if anyone else has this experience? DD was 14 in July and no sign of her period. She has all the other puberty signs, breasts growing, pubic hair, acne and mood swings! But no period. It's really getting her down and she's inclined to be anxious anyway. She just said to me, 'what happens if it never comes, and I can never have children'! What do I say to her? Anyone else got a 'late starter' in their family?

Not at that age, dont be ridiculous

They did for a friend of mine. It isn’t ridiculous.

I would most girls seem to start menstruation before this. A quick scan could put her mind at rest. If there is a problem the quicker you know the better.

What quick scan are you referring to? My understanding (and recent experience) is that vaginal ultrasound is the best way to check a woman's reproductive organs for abnormalities. Think as a 14yo I'd rather the reassurance that it's perfectly normal to not have periods yet.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 14/08/2024 18:51

I was 15. Neither short nor terribly thin.
My mum was 17. I anticipate my daughter will be a later starter as well.

They won’t do an internal scan on a 14yo. They did an abdominal ultrasound to check she actually had a womb, and checked hormone levels.

Abetes · 14/08/2024 18:59

My dd was 15 when she had her first period. She was tall and slim build but not underweight. She's now 23 and has been regular since she started. She wasn'r an outlier with her friendship group either - most had started earlier but she definitely wasn't the last.

So a blood test as well as a 'quick scan'? I don't see any point in putting a girl through that when she's still well within normal range.

Viewfrommyhouse · 14/08/2024 19:02

I was knocking 15 before mine. Nothing untoward 🤷‍♀️

Newbie8918 · 14/08/2024 19:17

I was almost 16. I remember a girl from my class was 14 and all of us other girls were amazed. She was very early compared to the rest of us. 14 is no age at all.

I was 15

DreadPirateRobots · 14/08/2024 12:41

I started at 16. I was always short and slim. I'm entirely healthy and conceived immediately every time I tried in my 30s.

14 is perfectly within the normal range.

Are you me? That was my exact situation only when they did start, they were far heavier than all of my friends. It’s like the pay back for starting later! 😭

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 14/08/2024 19:23

Back to the OP, I can't actually remember if I was 14 or 15 which is funny given the huge deal it was for me at the time, but I notice a few pps have mentioned late starters being tall and slim which was definitely the case for me too. And I didn't stop growing until I was 19!

MushMonster · 14/08/2024 12:46

Take her to the GP.they most likely will book her for a scan to check that all is good.

No they won't not untill she's atleast 16!

PurpleReindeer2 · 14/08/2024 19:44

OP try not to worry. No periods are ok until she is 16. Being active and sporty, I was the same. No problems conceiving when ready.

CharismaticMegafauna · 14/08/2024 19:48

14 is within the normal range I think. I didn't get my period until I was 15, going on 16. I was always a healthy weight and was not sporty, but I was very small for my age.

Cas112 · 14/08/2024 20:15

@caringcarer she won't get given a scan if taken to go. They will tell her to wait it out

WaltzingWaters · 14/08/2024 20:30

I was almost 17. I was short and slim.
If she’s slim and sporty I wouldn’t worry yet.

TokyoSushi · 14/08/2024 20:34

I was well into being 14, probably not far off 15, 2 children, no issues, always very 'easy' periods - lucky me! 😃

HollyFern1110 · 14/08/2024 20:37

I started at 15 so I’m not worried that 13 year old DD hasn’t got there yet either. We’re both larger body types too (tall, not skinny).

mamakoukla · 14/08/2024 20:40

15 is the age at which an investigation would be merited. Even for sporty/active types. Menstrual periods = in good health. There are consequences to hormonal imbalances etc.

MumofCrohnie · 14/08/2024 21:02

My DD is 14.5 and hasn't started yet. She got Crohn's at 10.5 and her breast buds disappeared as she lost weight. She was then treated and was ok for a couple of years. Has a bust, hair etc. then got ill again and lost weight and this seems to have stalled things again. She was 46kg at 5'4" in March. She was out on steroids and proper treatment and she is now 54 kg and curvy. I have noticed her skin is starting to break out now so I don't think it will be long. However she has already been referred to gynae for primary amenorrhea as the IBD doctors only give 3 months after treatment initiation for the body to catch up.

She had an MRI for her IBD which showed normal ovaries, uterus a year ago before her illness flared up again, so I am not too worried.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 14/08/2024 21:49

Another tall skinny almost 15 starter - conceived 2 children very easily and very regular easy periods, three days a month then all over. I think myself very fortunate and hope my Dd is the same (she was almost 15 when she started).

I'm 50 now and this is the first month that my cycle has been irregular - peri is here!

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 14/08/2024 21:58

i thought the tall thin sporty late start was common knowledge?
it certainly was when my dd was heavily involved in sports?
so far we are a family of late starters and with an 11 year old grand daughter i have my fingers crossed that she too makes it well past 13 and nearer to 15/16.

otravezempezamos · 14/08/2024 22:00

Nothing to worry about at 14. If nothing at 17 the doctor can investigate but 14 is average. It will happen.

Christwosheds · 14/08/2024 22:01

ShoehornSheryl · 14/08/2024 12:39

When did she start puberty? Onset of periods is around 2 years following the start of breast buds.

i should also add that 14 isn’t ‘late’.

Edited

I had breast buds start at 11 but no periods until 16. My Mum also 16, my dd 14 and a half. OP no need to worry yet, she will start fairly soon by the sound of it.

pippapipps · 15/08/2024 00:11

I was worried about my dd too but at 14 and 9 months she got her first period..started at a wedding reception too!
