Violently sick 24 hours after swimming in a river

21yo DS went kayaking (and I assume swimming) in the river, according to DD (DS isn't up to talking atm, I'll ask him later)

He's now being violently sick, repeatedly, even though there is nothing left to come up. His body, really, really doesn't want what ever is in him to be in him! Does this sound like something caught from the river or just a general sickness bug? Does it make a difference in how I can help hiim? I've asked him only to only have sips of water.

The same thing happened 5 years ago when he swam in a ford which is now well known to be polluted.

@SuePreemly I didn't know about Compton Verny and Wootton Hall, as we're on the other said of Warwickshire, so thank you- I'll tell DS and his friends.

@Howdoesitworkagain It would seem so. I'm guessing my posting names
are continuously showing in the Opening Poster Colour. Sorry if I'm being really confusing.

And just to clarify DS wasn't swimming in the Saxon Mill this week- that was years ago.

Instead of calling the people who want to enjoy river sports arseholes, we should be furious that the water companies are robbing us of this valuable resource. When my kids have been canoeing in the river I make them drink full fat cola, as (apparently) it's so bad for you it kills anything you might swallow.

This x 10000000000000.

We should all be able to swim in rivers and lakes without worrying about being poisoned by sewage.

Blame the previous Tory government and the water companies who gave all the profits to shareholders instead of investing the money in making the sewage systems safe so that they don't poison all their customers when they swim in lakes and rivers,

Makes my blood boil. Feargal Sharkey is a brilliant campaigner. We need more Feargals in the world.

Op, I'd take your DS to the hospital. My DS got badly dehydrated on holiday after being sick for over 24 hours and deteriorated quite fast. Was put on a drip in the hospital and he picked up within half an hour but had to stay in for a few days. Was quite scary.

Iasonnas · 16/08/2024 22:56

Why did you ring 111 tonight after a load of Prosecco and the intention of going nowhere if he's not been sick since Wednesday?

Scottishskifun · 16/08/2024 23:00

DH is a kayaker many rivers will make you ill the Nottingham white water centre its well known.
Drinking full fat coke before and after kayaking helps keep it at bay as it kills it basically.

For now keep him hydrated (again coke but flat coke) can help stomach upsets or flat lucazade.
When he does start eating again he needs to avoid dairy for a good few days as he risks developing a intolerance to it due to the body being in overdrive.

Hairyfairy01 · 16/08/2024 22:29

He's been unwell since Wednesday and you are being told to take him to a&e but you are pissed so don't want to? Have I got that right?

That's exactly how I read it 🤷‍♀️

CrazyHorse · 16/08/2024 23:09

@Iasonnas because I wanted advice and reassurance on how to help DS cope with it the stomach pain, which I ultimately received.

liveoppositeacrazyhorse · 16/08/2024 23:11

Ah ok missed the bit that he hadn't been sick since Wednesday. Probably ok now then.

CrazyHorse · 16/08/2024 23:12

@Scottishskifun - that's useful advice, thank you

He may have kidney injury

I would take him to A&E like a medical professional has told you to!

CrazyHorse · 16/08/2024 23:16

Now I think it's a really good thing DH and I had both had a Prosecco - or DS would have been dragged out to hospital with bad wind!

Exact same thing happened to ds when he was kayaking last weekend and he was violently sick early hours of Saturday morning and later on in the morning. Was rough on the Sunday and okay by the Monday

We had this OP. DS and pals went swimming after GCSEs. He was sick once but a day or so later DH and I had 24 hours of thinking we might die. Truly awful but over fairly quick.

But that's a sickness bug if your ds passed it to you? Not a bug caught from swimming in polluted water.

EarthSight · 16/08/2024 23:28

111 want to send DS off to hospital. DH and I have both had a Friday night Prosecco, and I think DS just needs to sit this out, and there isn't actually anything a hospital can do

You need to get to the hospital. Stuff you can catch in bodies of water can very nasty.

The risk is that eventually he won't be able to keep water down and he'll get dehydrated and his liver will be under stress. This has happened to me.

And yes, they can do something. If it's bacteria, they might give him an anti-nausea injection or drip, followed by anti-biotics. If he's that sick, he will love nausea injection alone because it will allow him to get some rest, and actually keep basic things down so he can maintain a bit of strength to help him get better.

GP surgeries can also administrate that injection. Careful they do it slowly though - it can hurt like hell if they do it too quickly or someone inexperienced is doing it.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/08/2024 23:29

For the love of god...the Avon wasn't fit for swimming when I was younger, never mind now! Look at the discharge data for Stratford, Welford, Bidford etc Confused then when he's less delicate show your son & hope he thinks better of it next time his mates suggest it. Sewage discharge map

Just try & keep him hydrated for now & I hope he's feeling better soon.

GatherlyGal · 16/08/2024 23:30

Maybe @outdamnedspots but all the boys who swam in the river had it and some family members got it too

Your always have Prosecco

You wont always have your health!

Enjoy 🥂

Please don’t tell me it’s the Avon at Batheaston 🤢
It horrifies me the number of people swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding there, oblivious of the obvious sewage floating past/hanging from the riverside bushes.
I know of at least 8 people who’ve contracted d&v from the water there yet idiots continue to ignore the advice NOT to swim etc in the river Avon. The sewage outlets are just upstream and constantly flowing into the river.

My DD got a similar illness after doing an organised paddleboarding session near there. We told them and they claimed that they'd never heard of any illness after paddleboarding at that location. Worst vomiting she's ever had.

You can get sick after nursing people suffering from water-borne disease, or food-poisoning. The pathogens (or do I mean bacteria?) can be spread through droplets, via hand-towels etc.

The lady who rang was VERY irritated when i said we didn't have a car to get him to the hospital, but DS is 21 and usually very healthy- I think he needs to sit this out rather than. Have antibiotics (and I'm the first person to take antibiotics for anything!)

I want to know how to help him through this- paracetamol? Gavciscon? Kefir ? Just sips of water? I've told him to have a shower as water will help with the pain and suggested he takes some of his sisters melatonin to help him sleep, but he's told me I'm stupid, and he may have a point there.

I appreciate I sound like a an idiot. I hate it when he's on pain, because he's not a fusser.

Ibuprofen may help. My son was ill this week and I gave him that for a few days. It did help.

DeadpoolvsBlackswan · 16/08/2024 23:42

When he's better give him a good scolding for being so bloody stupid. Hopefully that will teach him to stop swimming in sewage. Remind him it's piss, shit and sanitary pads he's swimming with.

CrazyHorse · 16/08/2024 23:42

OK, he is now drinking well, and today he ate. I think the pancakes with beans and cheese he's admitted he made for lunch weren't the best idea. give me strength

It seems he has wind, in his stomach, not his kidneys. I have had a kidney infection and there is no way I would be dithering if for one moment thought his kidneys were at risk.

Walking around seems to have shifted the wind. Confused He's now looking quite happy and healthy, and the drama wind has passed. Who knew wind could make you writhe so much!

We are such an overpopulated country all the shite has to go somewhere .

  • Water companies are greedy and they should all be nationalised and made to up their game.

Kidney injury doesnt cause kidney pain
