Violently sick 24 hours after swimming in a river

21yo DS went kayaking (and I assume swimming) in the river, according to DD (DS isn't up to talking atm, I'll ask him later)

He's now being violently sick, repeatedly, even though there is nothing left to come up. His body, really, really doesn't want what ever is in him to be in him! Does this sound like something caught from the river or just a general sickness bug? Does it make a difference in how I can help hiim? I've asked him only to only have sips of water.

The same thing happened 5 years ago when he swam in a ford which is now well known to be polluted.

Exactly! Compton Verney and the lake at Wootton Hall are safe, lifeguarded open water swimming spots and yet these idiots risk life and limb regularly despite signs up saying not to, and the farmer going to tell them not to swim there.

And yes they are idiots if they've been told numerous times the water isn't safe and they are trespassing and they continue to do so.

Edited

And there's the small matter of the boy who almost died in the water there a couple of years ago. The entry point by the pub is fenced off now, but that part of the river is still accessible once you're in.

A friend recently had an e-coli infection, they're currently in hospital unable to breathe for themself. E-coli can lead to septicaemia, you probably should consider going to hospital.

Toothlessdragon4 · 16/08/2024 22:05

Kidney and liver failure can come on quickly and cause irreversible damage.

21 is a funny age in males (so I’ve been told) as they can deteriorate very quickly.

If 111 think he should be seen get him to A&E.

OlympicBlue · 16/08/2024 22:05

Please see the previous posts about young healthy people. Your son is in pain and potentially severely unwell.

42isthemeaning · 16/08/2024 22:12

Please take your ds to A & E

Sorry is this some kind of reverse from a sick person whose parents are denying them help? If he was under 18, say 17 and you wouldn’t take him to teh hospital you would have social services on you. He’s in pain, has a potentially severe infection which needs antibiotics to prevent end organ damage and you’re joking around.

I've just been into his room to check on him. He's cheerfully said "I'm alright now." I'll keep checking on him.

Poor lad, I had this when I made the foolhardy error of drinking river water on a dog walk because I was thirsty. Couldn't even keep water down for days, I'd just projectile vomit it immediately. It turned out to be Giardiasis. Hope he's recovered!

SuePreemly · 16/08/2024 22:17

The OOH GP at Warwick hospital is excellent, ring 111 and get him seen OP

My partner had a very bad e coli infection, bloody stools etc. This is the only thing that really helped him with the cramps. He didn't eat much for a good few days and when he did eat, it was very bland food, scrambled eggs, plain chicken and rice.

There is a particular strain of probiotic in it that fights the E.coli.

He will need electrolytes too.

Also, he's not vomiting, and hasn't since early Wednesday.

Well that’s a drip feed and a half.

Try telling that to the arseholes who insist on swimming opposite the Saxon Mill regularly.

I work in environmental/river restoration these days and it's GRIM. I even think twice about letting the dog in it.

How did you conclude that they’re the arseholes in this scenario?

God I'd never swim in a river in this country. When you go abroad to some countries and see how pure the water can be there and think of our sludgy stinky rivers......

It should be banned until they stop duming raw sewage in them and keep them clean.

CrazyHorse · 16/08/2024 22:25

@titticaca - thank you, I've just ordered some to arrive tomorrow. Smile

He has been taking DiaCare which is Electrolytes with Probiotics. He says because it tastes funny he downed a large glass of it, which made him feel sick and gave him the pain.

He's been unwell since Wednesday and you are being told to take him to a&e but you are pissed so don't want to? Have I got that right?

LynetteScavo · 16/08/2024 22:34

@Karmaisac4t - it really isn't - read the full thread. I have given a summary in my first post this evening.

I've just spoken to someone else from 111, and given the same summary. They explained this will be severe wind. This makes sense. Ds has agreed and sniggered Hmm. Apparently gaviscon, paracetamol and fluid is the way to go.

titticaca · 16/08/2024 22:35

@CrazyHorse You're welcome. hope he feels better soon.

No, vomiting on Tuesday evening, which stopped on Wednesday. He now has bad wind it seems.

Read my other posts:

They've been told the water quality is awful
They're trespassing
Access was blocked nearby because a kid drowned there not long ago
There's safe, lifeguarded open water swimming venues open from 5am nearby

I don't understand why you'd risk life and limb to do it.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/08/2024 22:41

I had this from infected water. I was severely dehydrated and nearly needed hospital admission. It destroyed my stomach for many years. I still have IBS now.

CrazyHorse · 16/08/2024 22:41

The woman I just spoke to found the whole thing very funny and said she had this to look forward to because her DS is 14yo. I said to tell her DS not to swim in the Avon. She replied that she can tell him in till she's blue in the face, but he'll still jump in if his friends do and the weather's hot.

Something similar happened to me, sprite saved me, give him a couple of cans of 7 up or sprite, have him take slow sips every now and them, it's basically sugary drink with lots of glucose and electrolytes which he needs if he's throwing up so much. You want to keep him hydrated. Do not give him any food.

Ahh, the Saxon Mill.

Are you the OP, posting with 2 different names on this thread? 🫤
