Dd and her "turns"

skippy67 · 07/08/2024 15:48

My dd is 23. For the past 3 years, she's been having some worrying symptoms. She's described suddenly feeling very very weak, and losing all strength in her arms and legs. She finds it difficult to speak and sometimes has blurred vision too. These "turns" can last from 30 mins to hours. She's had ECGs, a brain MRI and numerous blood tests. Thankfully all normal. Years ago when we were at an outside event, she suddenly started crying, saying she couldn't see. We got her out of the crowd to a quiet area, and calmed her down. Eventually her vision returned and we went home. GP said she'd had an occular migraine. Could these episodes she's been having ever since be related to that? Thanks for reading.

does she work? social life? live independently?

Sera1989 · 07/08/2024 15:54

Has she had her blood pressure checked during these turns? Are they either when she's standing for long periods or going from sitting to standing?

Icannoteven · 07/08/2024 15:57

I get this. I wore a blood sugar monitor for 10 days and self diagnosed hypoglycaemia. I keep it in check with a low carb, high protein diet.

There doesn't seem to be a pattern. Sitting or standing. I'll ask about blood pressure. Thanks for replying.

How does she describe the vision loss?
I have aura migraines which affect my vision, speech & sometimes cause tingling/numbness in my arms.
It starts as feeling a bit spaced out, the a hole appearing in my field of vision which opens up until I can see less and less. The edges of it are burry or kind of zig zagged.
I sometimes feel confused and a bit disoriented afterwards. If the symptoms are similar it could be a migraine.

The vision loss hasn't happened for a while, but your description is exactly as she described it.

I’d be checking blood pressure and ocular migraines as well.
I used to get dizzy and faint and part of that was also losing my eyesight when a faint was coming on.
It was due to my blood pressure crashing.

BananagramBadger · 07/08/2024 16:20

Sounds like migraines to me too.

Mine were affected by low progesterone levels - didn’t know that until I started HRT but haven’t had one in two years since.

Mine were also never properly diagnosed - just confirmed ‘not epileptic and no brain tumour’ then left to get on with it. They operated differently each time so was hard to describe a pattern. No headache on the day so wasn’t a typical one etc.

Beanie567 · 07/08/2024 16:22

Get blood tested - my daughter had this and it turned out to be B12 and B6 deficiency, long term leads to all sorts of neurological symptoms. Easy to treat with tablets and she also uses a B12 spray but does take a LONG time to get back to normal.

AnnaMagnani · 07/08/2024 16:27

Another vote for blood pressure check during a funny turn- this was a bit easier for me as I work in Healthcare so nurses were around within minutes.

I am famous for my funny turns, I never actually black out but if I get close my vision goes black and white. It's low BP and I am completely exhausted for hours after.

I also get migraine and she could easily be having migraine- my aura is a black hole with a bright edge a bit like an eclipse. Again followed by headache and feeling crap for hours. You and she could look for triggers, the most common are being hungry, latenights, stormy weather, alcohol but there are lots more.

given three years and multiple tests and appointments, has blood pressure never been suggested?

She's had lots of blood tests already. Not sure what they checked though, so thanks for this.

I'm not entirely sure. She's been away at uni so there are gaps in my knowledge

Given what you describe

it is…. astonishing and intriguing that blood pressure wasn’t the first enquiry made rather than expensive tests!

Ask you daughter!

Nomorecoconutboosts · 07/08/2024 18:05

I have migraines with aura and have at times experienced these type of symptoms. It can feel
like terrible is happening especially if it’s new to someone
it may be worth her considering what her triggers might be. For many people they will cope with one trigger e.g. being tired. But if other triggers such as hormones, low blood sugar, not drinking enough fluids, drinking alcohol etc are added this can lead to a migraine. Well meaning people may tell her she should avoid cheese/chocolate etc - these are not always the common causes that people used to think - although some people are more sensitive of course.

i think you need to sit down with your DD and establish the facts

spinningtheweb · 07/08/2024 18:22

Sounds a lot like migraines.

greenleaveseverywhere · 07/08/2024 19:44

It sounds rather like the anxiety attacks I used to have.

Id suddenly blackout and felt like I couldn't really move/ see or breathe.

Learning to manage my anxiety with therapy helped these turns/ attacks to stop happening.

psed · 07/08/2024 20:04

Sounds like functional neurological disorder (FND). Can be diagnosed with the hoover test when she's feeling weak, it isn't a diagnosis of exclusion - though ask for a neurology consult and MRI/CT to see if anything else is going on as well. Neurosymptoms.org is your go to for answers, the NHS can't deal with it. I know, I have it. It's the most common neurological disorder no one has ever heard of.

I've just asked. She had her blood pressure checked once following a faint. It was found to be low. She was given fluids at the scene which brought her round.

I think that's your answer then, I've had to deter people from taking me straight round to A+E, apparently I look very dramatic when my BP is low.

If she wants to spend some money on this then Dr Boon Lim is amazing, I can't recommend him highly enough. Transformed my life when I was keeling over everywhere.

His advice to me was: drink 3l of water a day, most of it in the morning. Wear support stockings. Add more salt to your diet. And if you start to feel funny squeeze your bum cheeks, they are your biggest muscle. If not working then get yourself on the floor and put your legs up before you fall down.

so exactly at the point of ones of these incidents… her blood pressure was shown to be low

and in 3 years this has not been further explored beyond that one reading at the time of an incident?

Why are you being so snippy? Your tone on all your posts has been quite aggressive and you sound weirdly annoyed? Just leave the thread if it's winding you up so much.
