i just rather embarrasingly fell over in town (was on my way to the off licence!) Slipped up, and landed really heavily (i am rather heavy) on my but, elbows and head.
was so embarassed i crawled straight back to the car and managed to drive home.
It hurts. it is getting worse by the minute and i can't sit down!
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwww.
just needed to let that out.
is ice or heat better?

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 13/04/2008 18:32

ice

expatinscotland · 13/04/2008 18:32

empathies.

i broke mine about 9 years and it ssooooo hurt.

i find ice better at first. frozen peas wrapped in a muslin cloth.

Slubberdegullion · 13/04/2008 18:32

and Oh dear that sounds awful. Have you got some paracetamol. You will need to Mn or watch telly on your tummy tonight.

expatinscotland · 13/04/2008 18:33

get some paracetamol with CODEINE and take lots.

sorry, but when you truly break a bone, just paracetamol doesn't cut it.

it hurts. badly.

zippitippitoes · 13/04/2008 18:34

ooh nasty i did this and it lasted about six months i broke some ribs at the same time

slipped on ice on the way to get on the bus to the airport at the end of a snowboarding holiday

not sure what to suggest

Slubberdegullion · 13/04/2008 18:35

This will sound a little intimate, but you really need to get the ice wedged between your buttocks (onto the coccyx) so few crushed ice cubes (or frozen peas) in a small placcy bag, wrap in damp muslin/cloth as expat says and mould into tube shape.

Wedge in

20 mins

Slubberdegullion · 13/04/2008 18:36

plus ibuprofen.

If you do the paracetamol/coedine combo you need to start on prunes STAT as constipation plus # coccyx is deeply horrid.

NaughtyNigel · 13/04/2008 18:38

girls. you are so kind i'm crying with a combination of pain and warm fuzzy feelings. am off to crawl to the freezer.

TsarChasm · 13/04/2008 18:41

Oooo nooo. Very nasty . Def see a dr asap for whatever very strong painkillers they can prescibe.

My mum did this years ago on a bus. She got up to leave. The bus lurched unexpectadly and she fell back onto a metal handle on a seat corner.

zippitippitoes · 13/04/2008 18:41

sitting up in bed is awful for it

you dont notice until you try toi move after

NaughtyNigel · 13/04/2008 18:48

have peas up my bum crack.
have taken pain killers.
can't sit down so am kneeling.
i'm sure if it was really broke i wouldn't have been able to drive home - but just had to get off the road before someone saw me.
have sent dh to tjhe off license instead.

If you are still in agony you might need to make a trip to A&E tomorrow to have it x-rayed, not that there is much they can do unless it is a displaced fracture.

You may need to invest in a rubber ring to sit on.

NaughtyNigel · 13/04/2008 18:55

god. can't have that bit xrayed! also know people in xray (am a nurse!). i'll wait and see!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 13/04/2008 18:58

Mine was confirmed by xray. I'd fallen whilst abseiling and, even with a helmet, a bit of jagged rock had been able to slice my head open at the base of my skull and the fall knocked me out.

But when I came to, the FIRST thing I felt was that tailbone.

Try lying on your side when you need to sleep, and standing actually made me feel better.

Frozen peas, frozen peas, frozen peas - a tea towel is usually too thick so go for the muslin cloth to wrap them in.

You can also freeze some water in a polystyrene cup and then peel back the side of the cup till you have an exposed bit of ice. That way you can rub the ice on the area and your hands don't freeze.

Or freeze 2 parts water to 1 part rubbing alcohol in a zip back. It won't freeze, it'll go all slushy and be the perfect temp for icing the area.

Yes, codeine+ibu for the beginning and prunes or prune juice and raisins because being bunged up when you've got a break there is BAD.

I second the rubber ring if you get a confirmed break.

It SUCKS.

Slubberdegullion · 13/04/2008 18:59

I used to have a little heart sink moment whenever coccydynia was on the referral card (I was an OP physio BC) as it often meant carrying out the tricky contortionists act of buttock seperation with one hand (often used the elbow as well) and ultrasound probe to coccyx with the other.

expatinscotland · 13/04/2008 19:00

LOL @ can't have it xrayed.

They don't shove anything up your arse, just take a little picture of it .

Seriously, it hurt worse than my head, and I had to have 14 stitches to that.

I remember that, Aims.

Ooooowwwww!

It's soooo sore.

And just when you forget you've done it, you move a certain way that reminds you.

NaughtyNigel · 13/04/2008 19:14

abseiling, snowboardibg - you are so adventurous.
i was after a bottle of red!
will wait til tomorrow and see how it feels then.
thanks

Sanguine · 13/04/2008 20:31

If you are told it isn't broken, it's possible that you have subluxated your coccyx and/or your sacro-iliac joints. It sounds bizarre, but it is possible - my pelvic joints are forever doing that (combo of SPD and ehlers danlos syndrome). Hurts like blazes. The first thing is to deal with the pain and inflammation (get to a doc and get some decent strength opiates and anti-inflammatories). Get an x-ray to see if it's broken, if it isn't, and you still have pain after a couple of weeks when the bruising has gone down, I suggest you seek out a decent osteopath or chiropracter.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/04/2008 20:45

I did mine sledging down a hill on a bivvy bag when I was a student. Hit a rock.
Very ouch.

Psychomum5 · 13/04/2008 20:52

sympathies....I have also broken mine too, and it bloody hurt!!!!!

did mine coming off a slide and landing on my bum rather than putting my feet down.

had DD1 and DD2 on my lap and I was early pregnancy with DD3 so couldn't take strong painkilers or have the xray to confirm.......they confirmed mine by palpating the injury while I screamed and jumped bloody high (almost hit the doctor in the face too).

took mine months to heal, altho more because of the pregnancy rather than the injury IYGWIM.

NaughtyNigel · 14/04/2008 18:47

Oh great all these messages about how this is going to hurt for months. BAH!
am feeling a little tetchy - sorry.
went to work. Bum still bloody painful. phoned A & E to ask advice but as i'd have to take of my trousers to be examined i declined. i am the worlds biggest prude and unless i am unconscious noone is seeing my body unclothed.
so have taken a shedload of painkillers and am perched on on cheek on my chair here. i suppose if it still hurts in a few days i might see someone.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 14/04/2008 23:29

What?!

I didn't have to be 'examined' at all.

This was in the US, though.

All they did was Xray me.

How weird.

Get your GP to refer you for xray.

The last thing you want is someone diddling with your broken fucking bone when there's really nothing that can be done about it.
