Can someone tell me what the rota virus is? Not sure if the kids have it.

DD has been a bit off it since Thursday, on Friday ds1 had vomited all over his cot when he woke up, when dd came home from pre-school she fell asleep at the table and nodded on and off all day. Checked her temp and it was going up to 40.
Its kept doing this up until this morning.
DS1 started with diorreah yesterday and has woke up with it again and a temp.

Dh has also just come home from a night shift saying he feels like death and has had to go outside every 10 mins through the night as he's felt sick.

I'm full of bloody cold.

Does this sound rota virus like or do you need to be spewing your guts up permanently with that?

My DD was told she probably had rotavirus. She started with 2 days of vomiting and a high temp and then has had diarrhoea for 4 days and counting. As far as I know rotavirus mainly affects under 5s, and only rarely affects adults as they are usually immune to it. Maybe you all have a different virus?

HereComeTheGirls · 13/04/2008 07:52

Apparently rotavirus poo has a very distinctive smell too..almost sweet and very strong..we are definitely noticing this....!

belgo · 13/04/2008 07:59

could be rota virus. you'll only know for definite if the doctors want to take a poo sample.

My dd2 had what the doctors believed with rota virus, but I don't think they ever confirmed it. She was very ill with constant diarrhea and needed a drip for three days. She also had a febrile convulsion due to an uncontrollable temperature. She only vomited twice. The diarrhea took a month or more to go completely.

She was very ill, and I know two other childrenwho have also been hospitalised with rota virus.

Dehydration is the big worry with this illness - it's that what kills children in developing countries.

You need to keep their fluids up and keep thier temperature under control.

I would contact your out of hours doctor iiwy.

DS's poo does smell very weird.

Maybe it isnt it then.
DD has no diorreah and ds has only vomited once and that was 2 days ago.

Thanks for the advice

at the thought of the diarrhoea lasting a month!

belgo · 13/04/2008 08:12

the infection itself started to go after three or four days, but the diarrhea was so bad it took a month for her intestines to totally recover. At its worst she was needing 30 nappies a day, as the diarrhea was literally constant.

I had to be very careful with what she ate during that month.

Nbg · 13/04/2008 08:13

at diorreah lasting a month!

belgo · 13/04/2008 08:13

hope you all get better soon Nbq.

HereComeTheGirls · 13/04/2008 08:14

belgo..that sounds awful, my DD is only needing 10-15 nappies a day and that is bad enough, it must have been very hard for you!!

HereComeTheGirls · 13/04/2008 08:15

and yes, hope your two are much better soon Nbg

Nbg · 13/04/2008 08:16

Thanks Belgo.

Your poor dd though

The other thing I'm bothered about now is letting dd go to preschool tomorrow.
She hasnt had sickness or diorreah but they have a policy of a 48hr stay sway period if they have it.

Dont know whether to keep her off since shes been a bit off it.

OP posts:
belgo · 13/04/2008 08:17

yes it was especially as dh had gone skiing that week! Typical! The nurses were hopeless in the hospital - none of them bothered to change her nappies and I was awake nearly constantly at night changing her nappies. Diarrhea at that stage is pure acid, and shouldn't be left in contact with the skin.

DD2 is fine now though - it took about two months before she started eating well and putting on weight.

HereComeTheGirls · 13/04/2008 08:19

Yes my DD has a really raw bottom, even though we are washing it with water as soon as she has a dirty nappy

I was already worried about my DD's weight as she is in the 9th for weight and 80th for height, despite eating well..after a week of this all her bones are showing on her back, it's awful, can't wait for her to start gaining back weight!!

Nbg · 13/04/2008 08:19

Was her bottom burnt Belgo?

Ds's is today.
He's walking like a cowboy

Mbg - I would let her go if she is feeling well again, but not if she is still feeling off though, it's so awful when your child is sick, I wouldn't feel right letting anyone else come into contact with it. I know it's a difficult decision though.

HereComeTheGirls · 13/04/2008 08:21

Nbg - we are finding metanium really helpful for the sore botty!

Nbg · 13/04/2008 08:41

I don't mind her missing it too much as its just pre-school and she only does 2 and a half hour days.

I've got some metanium in a box somewhere.
Thanks.

Nbg - My DS has just got over the rotavirus. It was diagnosed by the doctor by a poo sample.

It is a form of gastroentritis. DS vomited for 1 day then had diarrhoea for about 1 week. He had a high temp (40) for the first day only. I got it and although I had no vomitting I had diarrhoea for about 5 days and awful stomach cramps.

My DS has had gastroentritis twice now and was hospitalised the first time. The main concern as the other posts have said is dehydration - give them lots of juice and diuralite sachets if you have them. You can give calpol often too as it will help with the cramps that they may suffer. I used metanium on his poor little bot.

Sorry this has gone on but you have my sympathies. You too belgo that sounded very severe for your little one

belgo · 13/04/2008 09:21

MammyofET - hope little ET gets over it completely quickly. Be very careful with his diet for quite a while.

HereComeTheGirls · 13/04/2008 09:24

belgo - what did you find were good things to eat? My DD is currently eating dry biscuits..first thing she has really eaten...

belgo · 13/04/2008 09:26

there is an acronym to help you remember:

BRAT

trying to remember what it stands for

belgo · 13/04/2008 09:27

I think:
biscuits/bread (dry) and bananas
rice
apples or do I mean apple juice
toast.

HereComeTheGirls · 13/04/2008 09:29

Thanks..I am going in right direction then! She doesnt like bananas that much but maybe she will once her appetite picks up!!

belgo · 13/04/2008 09:30

bananas are great because they help replace lost electrolytes like potassium
