What is going on with DD's skin? Should I be worried?? Pic Attached

Please help, does anyone recognise what is going on with the skin on 5yo DD's legs??

DDDay 1 started with a small cut-like graze on her right knee cap so i put a plaster on it (now the largest sore on pic 3)

Day 2 the sore looked bigger and more 'raw' plus another cut appeared where the sticky bit of the plaster had been so i assumed sensitivity to those plasters and so dressed it with a large dressinv instead. DD also mentioned 2 tiny spots on her left leg that looked like a heat spot or small bites. Both on the inside of her leg but one above and one below the knee so not next to each other.

Day 3 after taking the plaster off her left leg her knee is a complete mess, sores everywhere. And those 2 tiny spots are now big blistered sores.

Please, can anyone help? DD does not have a fever. She has been complaining about tummy pain a lot lately but don't know how that can be related??

Third photo definitely infected.
GP tomorrow.
Hope she's okay.

timetobegin · 24/06/2024 22:18

Dr in the morning that’s creeping

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 24/06/2024 22:19

The tiny spot next to the sore in pic 1 is what the 2 sores on her left leg looked like yesterday.

Could be impetigo? It's highly contagious and I think you might need antibiotic cream if it is.

LittleMonks11 · 24/06/2024 22:20

Poor thing. GP first thing.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 24/06/2024 22:21

Looks like impetigo (skin infection caused by nose bacteria in a cut) in which case she needs antibiotics

Take to GP or do an online consultation with photos- ours will prescribe from pics for impetigo as it is a common childhood problem

GrazingSheep · 24/06/2024 22:21

I agree it looks like impetigo.

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 24/06/2024 22:22

Thankyou, yes definitely GP tomorrow. I nearly threw her in the car and drove her to A&E tonight until family talked me down saying shes fine, doesnt even have a temperature. I have form for over reacting so redirecting my distress here Grin

NotPennysBoat · 24/06/2024 22:23

Impetigo, had the exact same with DD.

LightSpeeds · 24/06/2024 22:24

My daughter had an odd skin thing that started a bit similarly to this (grazes appearing on her body). It turned out to be something very serious (Steven's-Johnson Syndrome). She also became ill in herself.

If it's getting worse, I'd get her to the GP tomorrow...

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 24/06/2024 22:25

I've just had a Google at Impetigo, does it matter that it's only on her legs? Everywhere else is clear including her face hands and arms.

My son had something much like this that started from a cut on his leg and spread like this all over his leg and then torso. It was a staph infection from the cut and he needed antibiotics. The swabs also showed it had strep in it too. I then caught it off him. Defs doctors tomorrow!

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 24/06/2024 22:29

Just googled Steven's-Johnson Syndrome, one cause is a reaction to a new medication... DD just started omeprazole last week incase her tummy pain was reflux. Hopefully that's just a coincidence!

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 24/06/2024 22:34

Oh wow was he ok?? Ive seen documentaries on tv where people lost limbs from staph infections. I'm going to keep a close eye on her tonight. I tried to phone 111 before giving up due to lines being so busy and just taking her up to bed, wishing I'd just persevered now.

Looks like impetigo. It's highly contagious and will spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. Get her seen by your GP asap, she needs antibiotics.

Readnotscroll · 24/06/2024 22:53

Is she allergic to the dressing? Just the pattern of it, and you describe blisters. I would leave it uncovered overnight and see if it dries out. See these sensitivities often (am a nurse). Doesn’t look like impetigo or particularly infected.

Courseofjustice · 24/06/2024 22:55

It does look like impetigo, but also consider the plasters. My son is allergic to latex plasters and has a similar reaction to the photos in the past. That could then cause the impetigo??

Yes, blisters is exactly how I would describe what my son’s reaction to latex plasters looked like.

Bluebunnylover · 24/06/2024 23:06

She could be allergic to plasters or have an excema infection-this happened to my daughter and looks similar. Take her to minor injuries tomorrow 😊

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 24/06/2024 23:43

She is sensitive to some plasters but it never looks like this (the knee cap area) when she has a reaction. Every time she has a reaction, Every part of the skin in contact with the adhesive takes on a scaly appearance like eczema, so creates a rectangle shaped scaly patch except the centre where it's gauze touching the skin. It has never created big sores like these. Plus the sores on her other leg developed despite having no plasters on those areas. And also, the type of plasters I used are ones she has always been fine with.

OP posts:
asterel · 24/06/2024 23:50

Definitely infection - could be staph/impetigo/or maybe cellulitis if the patches spread very quickly. Monitor overnight, and get to GP/A&E/minor injuries walk-in super-early tomorrow morning for possible antibiotics.

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 24/06/2024 23:52

The 2 sores on her left leg, which look like the ones on her right leg, were uncovered all night and all day today so clearly not related to a plaster reaction.

Sorry, actually 1 of the spots on her left leg was covered with a plaster over night (pic 1). But you can see the outline of the plaster with zero reaction and the blisterd sore in the middle. The tiny spot on the leg near the blister is how it actually looked last night. It was a tiny spot and I only put a plaster on it to make her feel like I'd done something to help since she said it was painful. I'm hoping that new tiny spot doesn't blister overnight. Urgh poor baby, her legs are a mess Sad

Does your DD wear a dress/skirt and socks during the day allowing the areas affected to be exposed to the sun?
If so it could be a drug reaction triggered by exposure to the sun. Omeprazole is known to occasionally cause this type of reaction. There are a lot of drugs where you need to avoid exposure to the sun while taking them.
Your GP will be able to confirm this but it may be worth stopping the drug for the time being.

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 25/06/2024 00:11

No, all last week she wore leggings as the weather up here had been cold.

Thankyou all for your suggestions though, there has been some really useful advice tonight and things I should be more aware of. I had no about omeprazole and having to keep out of the sun! I have decided to stop giving it to her anyway until I know it has nothing to do with what is happening.
