quite severe pain (not joint pain) in leg - what could it be?

stealthsquiggle · 03/04/2008 13:29

For the past 4 days I have had a (slightly increasing) amount of pain on my inner thigh. It is sore to the touch, sore when I move, but not like a strained muscle - more like there is something sticking into it, IYSWIM. There are no visible marks and it is not noticeably red/swollen. I am not aware of having done anything to cause it.

..any ideas?!

Have you been on a flight recently? Could it be Deep Vein Thrombosis. Sorry for scaring you, just thinking out loud really.

stealthsquiggle · 03/04/2008 13:37

That was one of the things I was starting to think - except no, I haven't been on a 'plane!

OK - pain is now all the way down my leg and my foot is swollen.

Bearing in mind that I am on my own with 2 LOs - do I wait until tomorrow and make a GP appt, do something more urgently, or ignore it completely (have important meeting-up-with-MNers plans for tomorrow) and hope it goes away?

I probably wouldn't leave it if it is spreading this quickly. Is there anyone that can look after your children if you pop to A&E/ emergency doctor? I can't say what it might be as I havn't seen it but it sounds as though you need to get it looked at. You should give NHS Direct a call.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 06/04/2008 21:36

I wouldn't leave it either especially now your foot is swollen too.

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2008 21:38

by "quickly" - it has taken 6 days to get this far - is that consistent with DVT?

OP posts:
avenanap · 06/04/2008 21:42

It depends on the size and location of the clot. It may be an infection. I had a friend that had a DVT, she was in alot of pain, the leg was not swollen. Please get this checked out. Just in case.

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2008 21:52

I am the worst kind of hypochondriac as I worry about everything but don't do anything about it.

Sigh. I live bloody miles from anywhere. I will call NHSDirect and see what they say. Emergency appt first thing in the morning at the GP would be my preferred option, I think.

I can tell you now what NHS direct will should say.

A&E now. Based on what you have described on this thread you should be checked ASAP for DVT.

DVTs can progress quickly to pulmonary embolism....which is kind of bad.

Please go to A&E/walk in center.

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2008 22:06

A&E not v. practical with 2 LO's though - even if I got my DM over to babysit I would have to drive myself...

am waiting for call back from NHS Direct now

SlightlyMadSweet · 06/04/2008 22:17

I am sorry but being stranded at home with a pulmonary embolism would not be great either.

I had a suspected DVT which was spotted by my GP when I took one of my DTDs to Dr. He as so concerned that he took bloods there and then (even though it wasn't my consultation) and I ended up at the local hosp with a DVT scan.

A DVT is a potentially lifethreatening condition.

Wait and see what NHSdirect say but be prepared to be told to go to A&E.

SlightlyMadSweet · 06/04/2008 22:17

How old is the youngest?

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2008 22:18

They are 5 and 18mths - so too old for that to be a risk factor, although I am overweight.

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSweet · 06/04/2008 22:21

Yes you are right....

But your symptoms scream DVT to me.

OracleInaCoracle · 06/04/2008 22:28

SS, your health is more important. though

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2008 22:36

Lissie - just waiting for a call back. I will update you re tomorrow!

OP posts:
LilRedWG · 06/04/2008 22:37

SS - If you'd called me an hour ago I could have come and taken you to A&E but I've had acouple of glasses of wine now so can't drive! Make sure you take all and any advice and get yourself to A&E if necessary - don't mess with your health woman! There - lecture over.

Pavlovthecat · 06/04/2008 22:39

squiggle - you poor thing , hard with the LOs, not being able to just trek up to A&E and be reassured.
I hope its all ok.

avenanap · 06/04/2008 22:39

Honey. I told you earlier that my friend had DVT, she died. In a toliet. Alone. Take them with you if you have to, just get it checked. Please.

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2008 22:40

Just checked - nearest A&E, as I suspected, is 20 miles away. My DM is awake and could come over and stay with the DC but would I be allowed to drive home again?

OP posts:
Hulababy · 06/04/2008 22:43

My FIL had similar symptoms. His was a clot and he was taken into hospital there and then, once he'd been persuaded to go A&E. He was fine, but required treatment and itis a dagerous thing and can't be left.

I had similar symptoms a few years back and mine was infection. You could actually see the red vien of infection running the length of my leg, almost to my groin area by the time I gave in and went to A&E. Injected antibiotics sorted it very fast and I came home within a couple of hiurs no problemm

Now chances are that yours is not a clot, but you can't take that risk IMO.

LilRedWG · 06/04/2008 22:44

If you are not well enough to drive home they will probably be keeping you in anyway. Get your butt to A&E now, please! Call me if you need anything in the morning.

LilRedWG · 06/04/2008 22:48

Dh has his money on an ambulance! I think not, but just think of the gorgeous paramedics

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2008 22:53

I don't think so somehow, since NHSDirect said they would call me back sometime between now and 2am...

OP posts:
LilRedWG · 06/04/2008 22:57

I'd try and get some sleep then if I were you. Please do call me if you need anything. x
