Shopping list for heavy cold

ChristmasLightsLover · 11/05/2024 11:50

I'm sat in bed with a heavy cold, feeling quite meh. I think I must be missing something to help me with this.

What's on your list?

Paracetamol. Ibuprofen.
Lemon and honey glycerin.
Baby wipes (to save my nose from getting red/sore...)

What else?

Years ago, I bought Sula sugar free cola boiled sweets. They've stopped making that flavour now so need to find an alternative. Ducking on a boiled sweet usually helps with ear/glands pain.

You could buy one of those steamy cups you put drops and hot water in?

And crunchy/sour snacks if you can't taste anything 😜

cherryassam · 11/05/2024 12:10

Honey, lemon and ginger to make into hot drinks or add to tea

Jakemans menthol sweets are my go to

Chicken soup

Vaseline to form a barrier on the nose skin

Ice lollies, jelly if you’ve got a sore throat

LizzieBennett73 · 11/05/2024 12:13

Fizzy vitamin c tablets
Tissues

Quartzine · 11/05/2024 12:13

Otrivine decongestant and Covonia- the bright green one.

CancelledCheque · 11/05/2024 12:17

Whisky, lemons, honey, cinnamon sticks and cloves for a hot toddy.

Or just the lemons/honey for a hot drink. The whisky can help a little with sleep at night time though.

Olbas/Vicks decongestant nasal sticks. They can help a blocked nose temporarily.

Warm up with a hot toddy. The combination of whisky, honey, lemon, cinnamon and cloves really packs a punch and is great for entertaining in winter

Yes! A steamer cup. Haven't seen ours in a couple of years.

I'm feeling the same OP so following this thread 🤧
Sore throat, cough, blocked/runny nose.

I've been taking extra strength cold and flu tablets and hay fever tablets just in case but neither have made any difference 😩

SeaToSki · 11/05/2024 14:43

Zicam or zinc supplements. Vitamin D supplements. Vitamin C supplements.

ChristmasLightsLover · 12/05/2024 17:46

How have I not thought to do honey and lemon as a drink before now? I added some ice to the boiling water and it's lovely...

Well, I have this currently but mine is Covid, tested positive a few days ago.

Ordered ice cream and my favourite yoghurt. Along with the usual cold remedies and extra packs of soft tissue.

Jobnightmare2023 · 12/05/2024 17:55

Sudafed!

Yourethebeerthief · 12/05/2024 22:06

-Chicken soup if I can't be bothered making my own
-orange juice with bits
-orange ice lollies
-werthers originals
-painkillers
-decongestant nasal spray
-Olbas oil to put a few drops on the tiles when I have a shower
-honey to add to my tea
-Kleenex balsam tissues (baby wipes would sting my nose!)

I'm a champ at being sick with a cold. I hunker down with all my comforts: soup, chocolate, tissues, box set and a blanket. Quite happy feeling all sorry for myself. There's genuine pleasure to be had in being sick enough to mope a bit but not so sick you're in misery.

oObyeOo · 12/05/2024 22:09

Brandy in my lemsip then a nightnurse and antihistamine before bed

countdowntonap · 12/05/2024 22:12

King prawns!! Good quality protein to build strength against the virus.

DelphiniumBlue · 12/05/2024 22:14

I'd add fresh ginger to the lemon and honey, and then take extra Vitamin C & D - mega doses of each plus all the fruit I could get. Maybe orange juice too.

Lokshen · 12/05/2024 22:15

Vitamin C and Zinc

AdaColeman · 12/05/2024 22:21

Lucozade
Fizzy vitamin C tablets
Tissues with balm
Savlon creme if you've got a sore nose
Lip balm
Hot whiskey with lemon & cloves
Strepsils if you've got a sore throat or cough
Evian spray to keep you cool

Egg-in-a-cup if you are at death's door.
I hope you feel better very soon.

howchildrenreallylearn · 12/05/2024 22:25

Elderberry syrup (Sambucocl with extra Vit C and Zinc - get it at Amazon/Boots)

Elderberry and Echinacea tea (Pukka)

All good for immune system.

TakeOnFlea · 13/05/2024 10:47

Curry pot noodle
Lucozade

ChristmasLightsLover · 15/05/2024 13:11

I am loving this list.
What can I put on my nose and upper lip as the skin is so sore and cracked? Vaseline? Sudocream burned so I am now reluctant to experiment without recommendation...

OP posts:
cherryassam · 15/05/2024 13:53

I usually use petroleum jelly of some sort - so Vaseline or own brand / generic because I’m cheap!

Vaseline will be the only thing that doesn't sting. Or coconut oil maybe but I've never tried that.

IndependentUndefeated · 15/05/2024 23:52

I hope you lot don't feel as bad as I do, I've never felt so ill with a cold before. Thanks for the list, I'm not thinking straight and hadn't considered honey and lemon. Sage and lime is good too and I actually have some in my fridge woo hoo! I don't really want to eat but had to go out to get some (more) Beechams and thought I'd grab a tin of Heinz Oxtail soup from the petrol station. It's the only thing I fancied. They didn't have any. I went to the supermarket on the way home and they didn't have any either. I may have cried when I got back to the car. Even my teeth hurt.

WalkingaroundJardine · 15/05/2024 23:55

Paw Paw cream or Aloe Vera gel for the cracked lips and nose. So gentle but soothing.
