How many moles do you have?

Raisinsandweetabix · 30/04/2024 19:10

I'm covered unfortunately. Typical reddish hair, blue eyes, tan easily but also burn. Reason for asking is that apparently if you have over 15 moles your risk of breast cancer increases quite significantly which has scared me!

Too many to count, all over arms, legs and back, some on my front, probably hundreds, all small and flat, I had 3 raised ones cut out as they were in uncomfortable places, I heard it increases skin cancer not heard it increases breast. I try not worry what might be, not much you can do, I don't spend too long in sun.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 30/04/2024 19:27

Lots - dark hair but blue eyes. I avoid too much sun but I seem to be mole-prone. I keep an eye on them for changes. I didn't know they were linked to breast cancer, but I do check myself for breast lumps/changes regularly anyway.

Try not to worry too much - there are so many risk factors for different types of cancer (and other serious illnesses) that it would be hard to find anyone who didn't carry at least one.

I'm a natural ginger, blue eyes, extremely pale skin and burn like a lobster after 10 minutes in the sunshine, I think I have 1 or 2 moles, freckles on the other hand, hundreds.
My partner however, olive skinned, brown/green eyes, has hundreds of moles, he's covered in them. We take pictures of them every 6 months or so just to see if any are up to no good and it takes a ridiculous amount of time.

None but two gerbils.

GoodnightAdeline · 30/04/2024 19:45

Not many and the ones I have are tiny more like slightly raised freckles. However I am COVERED in cherry angiomas.

Diversion · 30/04/2024 19:55

I am covered in moles. The largest which was on my thigh and was there as a freckle when I was born was removed at the insistence of a gynaecologist when I went to see him about something else. That one was fine. Ive had two removed from my face, because they were large and bled if I caught them and one removed from my back which was pre-cancerous. That one was noticed by my friend and my husband, both who said it was changing and it was itchy. I have a lot on my back and really should get photos taken at regular intervals so that I can monitor any changes. Ive also got some in weird places, on the inside of one of my toes, one in my ear and one in my belly button.

I have about 20,000. I have olive skin and dark hair and my entire body is very moley.

familyissues12345 · 30/04/2024 20:19

Probably about 50? I'm also fair, strawberry blonde, blue eyes and very freckly!

WolfFoxHare · 30/04/2024 20:21

Five or six. I’m fair with light brown hair and blue eyes.

BiPolarBabe · 30/04/2024 20:39

Hundreds. I'm covered in the things. Recently seen a dermatologist and had two biopsied as they didn't like the look of them, went to see her as one was constantly getting caught and irritated (under my bra strap)
Typically the two they took off weren't the one that's irritating me.

mynameiscalypso · 30/04/2024 20:40

Hundreds and hundreds. I've had a few removed but nothing dodgy in them thankfully.

PuppetQueen · 30/04/2024 20:50

Interesting. There was a study a few years ago that suggested that people with lots of moles had longer telomeres (the "caps" on chromosomes that protect from damage), and hence a slower rate of ageing.

The question: Do moles mean you will live longer?

Aida Edemariam: The answer, according to researchers at King's College, London, is yes.

Raisinsandweetabix · 30/04/2024 21:28

Sounds like most of us have more than 30! I have had four taken off. But so many seem to appear as you get older. It must be a certain 'gene' type I think. So hard not to worry as the ageing process begins

Breast cancer? That's weird. I can imagine them being linked to skin cancer but not breast.

In answer to you question @Raisinsandweetabix None really. I did have a large-ish one on the side of my neck, and a smallish one on the side of my face. I loathed them so much that I had them removed (about 20 years ago.)

Got none to speak of now. I am shocked that so many posters have 30+ moles. Are we talking, big sticky-out ones?!! My DH has just one - on his back. My 2 DD have a couple each. On their back - just small and quite flat. We are all fair haired, blue eyed, fairly light skinned. Very little body hair. Dunno if that makes a difference.

I don't recall my folks and brother having any moles to speak of either. Just a couple of smallish flat ones.

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 30/04/2024 21:48

I am covered. I counted the ones on my legs once. Over 30 on one thigh and over 50 on the other. No idea about the rest of my body. Too many to count.

Xray83 · 30/04/2024 21:50

Loads and loads especially on my back!!

SavingNotSpending · 30/04/2024 21:52

I have loads of moles - arms legs back stomach face - I remember counting them as a child and I’ve definitely got more as I’ve got older. Most are small flat sort of ones but I do have some bigger ones. I have two on my face that I’d love to have removed but have been told that the scars would be worse unfortunately

Raisinsandweetabix · 30/04/2024 21:54

It's to do with high levels of estrogen in the body, which can cause more moles aswell as influence the risk of breast cancer. Too much information is sometimes a bad thing !

My moles can't be oestrogen related as I have minimal oestrogen in my body since having my ovaries removed 8 years ago - but the moles still keep coming!

ohthejoys21 · 30/04/2024 22:55

I only have one small mole, our skin consultant said he has never seen a body like mine without moles! Dh has lots all over and 6 years ago had a melanoma taken out. He has his whole body examined every 6 months.

CrunchyCarrot · 01/05/2024 05:56

I think 2 or 3 small ones. I am very fair skinned with blue eyes. Sunburn in minutes in summer so tend to stay out of the sun, also it causes more freckles!

nothingsforgotten · 01/05/2024 09:12

I have loads of them - but I live in NZ and the sun is very damaging here, plus when I was a child/teen no-one knew much about the risk of sunburn. I've never heard about a link between the number of moles and breast cancer.
