Sorry. Im feeling stressed.
Ds age 6 got sent home from school at lunch in an awful lot of distress screaming that his ear and head hurt.
Been to gp just. He has

  • Temp of 38.5 despite calpol and ibuprofen
  • a large swelling behind his ear at the top of his neck
  • a lot of pain in his head and ear
  • very pale
  • distressed / crying / falling asleep very quickly

She was concerned and did a full body check including testes. Told me she has no idea what's caused it and then noticed his ear is bleeding and has very weird brown spots in too.
Has prescribed antibiotics and an ear spray.
Wants to see him again Tuesday to review the swelling In neck (size of a golf ball but not as prominent)
Said if I'm concerned at all go to a&e immediately
Has anyone seen anything like this in an ear before? She said it looked almost like a rash but odd that it's bleeding.
It's also on his school collar.
He had a nose bleed earlier this week which I forgot to tell her. The first one he's ever had

its good he is already on Antibiotics. However I would go in and hopefully get seen by someone who sees more of this sort of thing maybe even ENT also they would be able to scan. Mastoiditis treatment is intravenous AB I have been through that with daughter and as others have said that was around 5 days in hospital and a CT scan to see what was happening. My daughter had a raised area just behind her ear, but it was only slight. AB worked and we came home after 5 days and had a follow up a few weeks later to check hearing and all OK. I wouldn't mess about if hearing is at risk. We were seen by GP 3 times over a few weeks and then sent directly in, she had had two courses or oral AB. We were lucky that one of the GPs at the surgery is a P/T ENT so he looked at it and knew what it was so phoned ahead.

Good Luck sorting it out

RB68 · 01/05/2024 18:47

Glad you were seen and understand whats going on - poor little thing he will be a bit miserable till the AB really kick in. Hope he perks up for the week end but he will be worn out with it all

You need to go urgently. Not to alarm you but friends daughter had the same and had ear infection that spread to the skull which had to be removed under general anaesthetic...I forgot what the condition is called . GO!! rather safe than sorry

Ineedaholidayyyy · 01/05/2024 18:51

Glad you went and it's nothing too serious, you can relax now and not have to worry. I would have done the same in your shoes. I wouldn't have been too concerned about the temperature, but with him also have the large swelling and how his ear looked, you did the right thing getting him checked over. Hope he feels better soon.

Just caught up on this. Looks nasty. My DD had a burst ear drum. She was poorly before we went on holiday and the GP said it was viral and wouldn’t give us anything. We flew to Australia and she was very restless on the plane and for a few days after so we took her to the GP in Australia who gave us some antibiotics to keep holiday of in case it got worse. But didn’t think we needed them straight away. We then did some travelling for a week and the fridge on our campervan wouldn’t stay on when we were in transit. So the antibiotics didn’t keep. We returned from the travel but if our visit and had a night of absolute hysterics - mistaken for poor behaviour by family. Put her to bed early and when we got her up in the morning her pillow was full of gunk. Her ear drum had burst overnight. Took her back to GP who gave antibiotics and took a swab to make sure we had the right ones and they called us back with results when we did. Flight home was fine because once burst the eardrum was no longer causing pain. It was the worst pain I’ve seen a 3 year old experience though.

DisabledDemon · 01/05/2024 19:12

Straight off to A&E with that little lad. They'll see him quickly.

I know! Especially when the thread is so short anyway!

Fluffmum · 01/05/2024 19:40

Perforation of ear drum or mastoid infection. Take him to A and E

Umbongowasyuk · 01/05/2024 19:43

Urgh I give up

Littlemissprosecco · 01/05/2024 19:46

So do I

YouAreInMySpot · 01/05/2024 19:50

I’ve had a burst eardrum, which healed in its own. I was deaf on that side for about a month though, so mention it to school so they can seat him near the teacher till it heals.

nappysan · 01/05/2024 20:32

I hope your little boy is feeling much better soon.

I had a burst eardrum last year and GP prescribed Otomise spray. It stung like mad and I couldn’t hear anything after using it. Turns out it is contraindicated in case of perforation and I now have hearing loss in that ear.

Please be very careful and double check everything you are prescribed, I wish I had

StressedOutButProudMama · 01/05/2024 20:47

Get him to hospital it may be nothing but they'll do a scan to be sure.

Crazycrazylady · 01/05/2024 20:48

Might be a burst ear drum. Incredibly painful .

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 01/05/2024 20:49

Do people really not bother to read threads or at least the OPs updates????

JKRIsRight · 01/05/2024 20:50

The pain before a burst eardrum is probably the second worst pain I have ever felt in my life.
I would have done the same in your position, hopefully the antibiotics treat it but at least there will be some relief now the pressure has eased a bit.

Some people clearly don’t, mentioning no names @DisabledDemon @Noangelbuthavingfun @Fluffmum @StressedOutButProudMama @Crazycrazylady and that’s just this page.

Jeannie88 · 01/05/2024 21:02

Please go, i would be worried about anything to do with bleeding in the head. When checked and hopefully a scan at least you will have peace of mind. Xx

Have you bothered to read the thread??? Clearly not as the op has updated.

noosmummy12 · 01/05/2024 21:16

Could be a burst eardrum….

sorry couldn’t help myself! I hope he’s feeling better now he’s had a good sleep! Bet you needed it too! Hope his birthday weekend goes well xx

Proudofmynane · 01/05/2024 22:43

Could it be one of his back teeth? A cracked tooth or a bit of decay could have caused a bad infection!! I hope there is someone at A+E who can help you and you're not just sitting all night!!

Lovemybunnies · 01/05/2024 22:45

My daughter has had a bleeding ear and has had mastoiditis twice and this sounds similar. I think the GP should have sent you up straight away. Hoping he gets better very soon. Mastoiditis is awful and my Dad (77) is deaf because his wasn’t treated.

I do apologise, I saw it, had more urgent issues to attend to, then back to it when I had time to it. Sorry this has enraged you.

DiduAye · 01/05/2024 23:26

Sounds like and looks like it could be mastoiditis in which case I'd be at A and E asap my schoolfriend had an awful time with that and my granddaughter ended up hospitalised for a week on Iv antibiotics
