Sorry. Im feeling stressed.
Ds age 6 got sent home from school at lunch in an awful lot of distress screaming that his ear and head hurt.
Been to gp just. He has

  • Temp of 38.5 despite calpol and ibuprofen
  • a large swelling behind his ear at the top of his neck
  • a lot of pain in his head and ear
  • very pale
  • distressed / crying / falling asleep very quickly

She was concerned and did a full body check including testes. Told me she has no idea what's caused it and then noticed his ear is bleeding and has very weird brown spots in too.
Has prescribed antibiotics and an ear spray.
Wants to see him again Tuesday to review the swelling In neck (size of a golf ball but not as prominent)
Said if I'm concerned at all go to a&e immediately
Has anyone seen anything like this in an ear before? She said it looked almost like a rash but odd that it's bleeding.
It's also on his school collar.
He had a nose bleed earlier this week which I forgot to tell her. The first one he's ever had

Ouch, poor thing. DD had a perforated eardrum like that looks and we had a rough ride for about 4/5 days before improvement. Lots of rest, fluids and painkillers.

Newnamewhodiss · 30/04/2024 21:47

Oh bless him. As with others, once my son’s ear drum had burst we found the worst was over. It’s horrible seeing them so in pain before it pops though - DS used to scream. Sending unmumsnetty hugs. Hope you all get some rest tonight Flowers

My child nearly died from mastoiditis complications, I would be keeping the closest eye on him for the next while!
I guess we are just prone to ear stuff as a family. I had regular infections as a kid and then a resurgence a few years ago where my eardrum burst in the middle of the night sleeping over at my then new-ish boyfriend's house. The pain was shocking but the relief was instantaneous.

GoodnightAdeline · 30/04/2024 21:54

Glad you’ve been seen, I’m sure you will but keep a very close eye on him maybe set an alarm to check on him every couple of hours. Hope he’s on the mend very soon!

Poor lad! Hope he enjoys his birthday

Tinysarah1985 · 30/04/2024 22:30

Normally I would say no, but that looks like a perforated ear drum. Don't mess around with it. Did he say it felt 'fizzy' at all? My ear went like that and it was perforated

justasking111 · 30/04/2024 22:39

My adult son spent eight days in hospital on intravenous antibiotics. The infection was in his nose, ear and brain. The bone in the ear that protects the brain was missing.

Please watch for headaches, don't hesitate to take him back if he deteriorates

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 01/05/2024 06:31

Glad you are home. Youngest had burst eardrum many years ago. Hope your dc recovers soon.

QuiltedHippo · 01/05/2024 06:36

Poor little thing, glad you went - how was he overnight?

He was absolutely fine thanks for asking. He slept straight through till now and is a lot more himself today. I think like some have said, the perforation has released the pressure and made him feel better!

Glad to hear it OP!

Boringthreadalert · 01/05/2024 08:16

This is this mornings image, so still a little bloody and not very pleasant looking but he's a lot better in himself! 🙂

Good news op.
No swimming for a bit! Be careful washing his hair too. Some kind of earplug is good as he’s young. You need to not let water in

Yourinmyspot · 01/05/2024 09:29

Poor boy, I had an ear infection a few years ago and it was awful, once my eardrum burst and all the infection came out it started to get better and less painful.

I hope your son continues to feel better and enjoys his birthday weekend.

TheShellBeach · 01/05/2024 12:09

Poor fella. It must have been agonising. I'm glad he's a bit better.

I would be at a and e OP. Could it be horrendous sinus infection? Ears, nose, gland in neck? Poor little thing. Must be in a lot of pain.

Just have. Ah OK. Dd has this a couple of months ago then went swimming after 6 weeks but was too soon and got terrible ear infection again. So yeah, put swimming off for a long time op!

LoreleiG · 01/05/2024 15:46

Poor him! I was in hospital once with similar and still remember the pain. Glad he is on the mend.

Frances0911 · 01/05/2024 17:49

Could he have poked his ear with something, or shoved something down it? I'd definitely go to A&E, and play on it that the doctor was unsure what was wrong.

CatherineDurrant · 01/05/2024 18:01

I hope you've taken him to A&E by now...
