Sorry. App is glitching.

3rd attempt!

Spatone doesn't contain enough iron.

While I agree with PP that the reason for low ferritin levels should be examined, it's possible to have low levels for no reason, specifically.

I did for many years, ultimately consistency with ferrous sulfate resolved it, and focusing on diet.

I’m interested in this . Mine is 16? But it was within range (just) by the nhs standard but I am constantly knackered?

Nice guidelines say should be over 30..

You want it more towards 80 / 100

I feel normal at 24, but currently 8. Gp planning to push for iron infusion if it doesn’t improve in three months. I’m exhausted and want the infusion now.

Swimbikerunmummy · 22/04/2024 20:52

I’ve managed to get my ferritin from 19 to 41 in 5 months by taking 2 spatone sachets a day. It contains less iron but is more easily absorbed as I understand it. I can’t tolerate iron tablets.

Frankley · 22/04/2024 20:54

My ferritin and folate were low for years. Hb fine. I used to stuff myself with the correct foods to try and raise ferritin , to no effect.
Later on , l became anaemic. I was found to have Coeliac disease. Ferritin and folate levels good now.
Ì did not have any of the "classic ^ symptoms for Coeliac.

Celiac is something theyve tested for and ruled out

But glad they found a reason // diagnosis 4 you

You could try arguing for it now
As yours is below 30

My gp gave it to me fast when mine was 8

( feretin is stored in liver ,
And some other places)

I question if i have sibo too

I’ve tried. Nice no longer support iron infusions for low ferritin and it’s my fault because I refuse to have a coil… my periods last 4 days and aren’t heavy but my male gp knows best. I’ve always responded badly to hormone contraceptives so I’ve said no because I don’t think it’ll solve it anyway. Mine was 6 in October 2020 and the highest I’ve got it is 24 since then.

Have they ruled out or considered pernicious anemia ? - have u had the instinct** factor blood test ?

** however its spelt..

Do you eat lotsa iron rich foods ever day ?

Have you done a recent Qfit test ?

You could have bowel polyps..

Other than say its your period - have they checked 4 other causes ?
4 example i had a gastroscopy x 2 - to check for stomach bleed

OP posts:
TeenLifeMum · 22/04/2024 21:43

They won’t check for anything because I’m 43 and it’ll definitely be my periods. I’m too exhausted to argue.

TeenLifeMum · 22/04/2024 21:44

And yes, I eat red meat and lots of green veg.

CrunchyCarrot · 22/04/2024 21:47

Those of you eating spinach - it contains oxalate which blocks iron absorption!

bluejelly · 22/04/2024 22:33

I take ferrous fumarate (on prescription) with a vitamin C tablet. Keeps my levels up.

Soooo. Most of my bloods came back as 'borderline' or 'see GP' but he didn't actually request ferritin so that's being done on bloods to be taken later this week.

Interestingly he did say I should be taking folic acid supplements, but not to start these until after the next lot of bloods.

Groovee · 05/05/2024 12:33

Yeah but I was down at 17 and it wasn't enough and dropped to 12 in a couple of weeks.

worldwidetravel2017 · 16/09/2024 22:24

Returned to this thread today as Mine is just 31 now :(

OP posts:
minisoksmakehardwork · 17/09/2024 06:42

Yikes! But they'll argue it's 'still within range'. I've just been put back in folic acid. But I am also now on levothroxine as my thyroid peroxide antibody test was way out of range by hundreds. Even though TSH and T4 were borderline/only just on the 'wrong' side.

Covidwoes · 17/09/2024 09:51

@worldwidetravel2017 I'm having this dilemma! Mine has gone down from 33 to 30, despite taking expensive supplements for months. GP won't do anything as 30 is normal. I have no idea what to do!

Has the cause been investigated ?
Ask nhs gp 4 poop test / q fit test
You may have benign bowel polyps

How are your bowels
.have u been tested 4 celiac
.have u been assessed for ibs.or absorption issues ?

You may have iron deficiency anemia

Fertility consultant wrote a letter this month saying my feretin needs to be well above 15

They marked it ok without viewing this letter

I did a Qfit a while back as I had bleeding, but it was negative. Coeliac has been investigated, and to be fair I don't have digestive issues. Mystery!
