Toothache but dentist can't see anything

Since Wednesday at 5am I have had the worst toothache, I can't work it is so bad and didn't sleep much last night. Ibuprofen does seem to help a little. It is in my top left side yesterday, and today it is bottom left!

I've been to 2 dentists. One said it is because I am brushing too hard or that my wisdom teeth are growing and moving my teeth. Second said she thinks I need a root canal, but doesn't know for definite and to wait a week to see how I feel.

The pain is so bad.

Anyone had this? Will it go away?

I was worried I'm maybe clenching my jaw at night so have brought a mouthguard today. Btw I can still eat on my left side, doesn't hurt to eat !

Toothache is the worst. I had something similar a few years ago. My dentist and I couldn’t really pin point what tooth it was. He ended up putting an injection in somewhere to a nerve that dealt with one part of my mouth and that helped him work out whether it was an upper or lower tooth. You can buy ibuprofen mixed with codeine now which is better than ibuprofen on it’s own. You can then top up in between with paracetamol. Be careful not to take too much. I hope you get it fixed soon.

GoodVibesHere · 18/04/2024 20:48

I'm.not recommending that you mix drugs but I have resorted to a swig of whiskey before now, for an extremely painful tooth.

Look up Trigeminal neuralgia. I’ve had 2 teeth removed as I was adamant it was my tooth hurting. Actually diagnosed with Trigeminal neuralgia.

Datafan55 · 18/04/2024 20:52

I had awful tooth ache once. Dentist couldn't see anything, sent me to a specialist. Thankfully a specialist said not to remove a root canal as no proof (based on xrays). Then I twigged it was nerves in my shoulder/neck/jaw ... Nothing to do with my teeth at all!

bellsbuss · 18/04/2024 20:52

I had that once , it turned out to be a crack in an old filling I had. The pain was excruciating

cointos · 18/04/2024 20:54

I had a toothache I worried was Trigeminal neuralgia. I was on the floor with the pain. It was shooting up my cheek beside my nose from my canine tooth. I went to a dentist who immediately said it was my wisdom tooth. I thought she was wrong because it was from the wrong place but the pain disappeared immediately after an extraction and I haven't had it since.

What happened? Did you get it replaced? Was the pain just in that tooth?

They did an x Ray but couldn't see anything , dentist wasn't sure if that was the problem but luckily it was. Yes he removed the old filling and replaced it and no more pain.

Where was your pain? I'm just confused because my top and bottom hurt.. like they are taking it in turns to hurt. But always left side.

I had this in molar, nothing seen on xray, dentist did some tests y tapping each tooth & turned out I had a crack right down side of tooth which wasn't visible but once tooth was filled/capped it disappeared.

Mouthfulofquiz · 18/04/2024 21:05

Yep I had exactly this. Had an X-ray (showed nothing) had an examination of my ears which showed a bulging and infected ear drum. However, the pain turn out to be a nerve dying due to infection under a large filling further back in my mouth. Not nice, take all the pain killers (obviously
follow medical advice!)

EffinMagicFairy · 18/04/2024 21:12

DS had excruciating pain, GP diagnosed to tonsillitis but he could actually swallow, I thought something up with his teeth, pain subsided a bit and said he would allow someone to look in his mouth, took him to out of hours dentist, had full x-ray and turned out he had salivary gland stones which are very painful, ended up having them removed as every time he got a cold his gland got infected.

AnnaMagnani · 18/04/2024 21:15

How many teeth hurt? If it is a lot of teeth then tooth grinding is likely.

If you have a partner, have they ever noticed you grinding your teeth overnight?

I got diagnosed when I went to the dentist complaining that half my teeth hurt. You need a dentist fitted mouthguard.

Here’s a possibility … I had temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) awful pain, couldn’t tell whether it was toothache, earache or jaw ache. One strange symptom was that I couldn’t open my mouth normally. Physiotherapy helped a lot.

CherrySocks · 18/04/2024 21:22

Could be Trigeminal neuralgia as others have said

Meredusoleil · 18/04/2024 21:33

I have been having a similar problem on and off since January!!! Agonising pain on several different occasions, it's a bottom right molar that had a huge filling in it. X-ray showed no tooth decay, gum disease or damaged filling, so dentist said must be a crack.

She was all set to extract the tooth, when had a change of heart and started a root canal instead. In between appointments 2 and 3 (so during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend), I developed an infection and needed antibiotics. The pain was even worse than the original pain!

Tomorrow I should have the final root canal appointment, but I started to get some.pain again today and have had some twinges over the last week. Very worried there was nothing wrong with my actual tooth and its either my jaw or something else!!!

Off to Google that neuralgia thingy everyone else has mentioned upthread now.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/04/2024 21:36

The worst toothache I'd ever experienced in my life resolved after taking decongestants.

Turns out that blocked sinuses can press on nerves that go right to the teeth.

SlowBurn · 18/04/2024 21:37

I had that and the dentist couldn’t find anything. The pain went on for so long they gave me antibiotics anyway and the pain went and never came back.

How did you find a specialist physio for this? Was it NHS or private? Thanks!

I was seen fairly quickly through the NHS. Fairly painful manipulation and had exercises to do.

mlc0 · 18/04/2024 21:55

I had this and it was a crack in my filling and it was switching from top tooth, to bottom, to the one next to my front tooth. Honestly never felt anything like it. My tongue brushing against the tooth would leave me screaming in pain. When dentist realised what it was I had the tooth pulled

loropianalover · 18/04/2024 21:57

I second swishing some whiskey around your mouth, or very carefully dab clove oil if you can pinpoint the pain at all.

Do you really have to wait a week, can you call up dentist in the morning and ask for an injection or more xrays?

I don't have pain but I have very clicky jaws. Y dentist has recommended acupuncture (which actually has helped, on one side at least, to my amazement) but I'm very much in the market for other things that might help. Do you think it would benefit meeven if I'm not in pain?

bellsbuss · 18/04/2024 22:42

@Sleeponit tbh the pain was so bad I only knew what side it was on, I didn't know whether was it was top or bottom. I've given birth 4 times and the pain was worse than than childbirth

GG1986 · 18/04/2024 22:43

It could be sinusitis? Does it hurt if you bend forward?
