Toothache but dentist can't see anything

Since Wednesday at 5am I have had the worst toothache, I can't work it is so bad and didn't sleep much last night. Ibuprofen does seem to help a little. It is in my top left side yesterday, and today it is bottom left!

I've been to 2 dentists. One said it is because I am brushing too hard or that my wisdom teeth are growing and moving my teeth. Second said she thinks I need a root canal, but doesn't know for definite and to wait a week to see how I feel.

The pain is so bad.

Anyone had this? Will it go away?

I was worried I'm maybe clenching my jaw at night so have brought a mouthguard today. Btw I can still eat on my left side, doesn't hurt to eat !

I’d suggest a sinus infection too, that can cause horrible toothache.

Look up Trigeminal neuralgia. I’ve had 2 teeth removed as I was adamant it was my tooth hurting. Actually diagnosed with Trigeminal neuralgia.

Came here to say this!

This was exactly how my Trigeminal Neuralgia started - I then started getting numbness & altered sensation on my left side which was the same side as the tooth pain. My teeth felt like they'd been kicked by a donkey. Here's the NHS link to check to see if any of it resonates with you - there's also an informative fb page. Many of us have had unnecessary dental work when the teeth weren't the true problem at all.

Trigeminal neuralgia

Find out about trigeminal neuralgia, which is sudden, severe facial pain, often described as sharp, shooting or like an electric shock.

Thank you so much. I'm still suffering and really had enough this morning so I'm really going to get things sorted now.

@Sleeponit I'm still suffering too , it just seems to be dull ache/pressure ! The dentist is saying that it's my impacted wisdom tooth pushing aswell . Haven't been to the dentist in a few months though , so I've booked for tomorrow for her to double check the teeth again as it's been a while !

I have been having a similar problem on and off since January!!! Agonising pain on several different occasions, it's a bottom right molar that had a huge filling in it. X-ray showed no tooth decay, gum disease or damaged filling, so dentist said must be a crack.

She was all set to extract the tooth, when had a change of heart and started a root canal instead. In between appointments 2 and 3 (so during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend), I developed an infection and needed antibiotics. The pain was even worse than the original pain!

Tomorrow I should have the final root canal appointment, but I started to get some.pain again today and have had some twinges over the last week. Very worried there was nothing wrong with my actual tooth and its either my jaw or something else!!!

Off to Google that neuralgia thingy everyone else has mentioned upthread now.

How are you getting on?

I can have mild tooth ache, related to Parkinson’s, nothing wrong with teeth, generally in hands tho.
Destonia I’m told, very annoying

How are you getting on?

The tooth that caused me pain is all good after about 3 appointments to have a root canal, touch wood.

However, I'm about to start a 2 appointment course of treatment for a (costly) crown on a pre-molar with filling where one wall of the tooth has broken off!

Absolutely dreading the pain during and in between, so wish me luck with it 🤞

Nets888 · 01/01/2025 13:21

@Sleeponit did you find out what's causing your pain? I've similar but also sensitive to heat.

Oblomov25 · 01/01/2025 15:13

You have to wonder how any health professional could be so stupid. To tell someone in excruciating pain to come back in a week beggars belief. Make another appointment and ask them to not be so dismissive.

Oblomov25 · 01/01/2025 15:15

Ask gp for stronger painkillers and some antibiotics.

Deedoo · 17/10/2025 10:03

@Tumbler2121 can yoh share the physio exercises what manipulation did they do! Be lucky if nhs did hands on

Deedoo · 17/10/2025 10:13

@Nets888 you might need a root canal
