My little boy was jaundiced at birth so has been shoved full of breast and formula to try and feed him up and hydrate him in his roasting hot room under the lamp. We've been home since last night and he really isn't pooing. Hasn't done since last night. He's weeing, so can't be too dehydrated, do you think it's just the transition between meconium and proper poo? When should I worry? He's eating well...since we've been home he's had at least 40 mls/30 mins breast every three hours. Milk came in today so have had much more breastfeeding and no formula.

I'd give it til tomorrow morning and see if anything happens. if not then ring your midwife and see what she says.

avenanap · 30/03/2008 23:36

As long as he has pooped since he was born then this is fine. It just takes a short whie for the tumy to get going sometimes. Phone your midwife tomorrow if you are concerned. Sometimes breast fed babies can go a couple of days without pooing.

Prufrock · 30/03/2008 23:41

Don't panic - wet nappies are more important than poo in indicating hydration levels. But do be prepared - my 2 (breastfed) both used to go 3 or 4 days without a poo, but when it finally came I knew about it. Sometimes it used to explode out of the necks of babygros

It's my understanding that very young newborns do generally have at least one bowel movement a day.

I agree with fingerwoman, give the midwife a shout in the morning. It doesn't hurt to check and they really don't mind you asking.

Doesn't that depend on if they have got rid of all the muconium?

IdrisTheDragon · 31/03/2008 00:11

I'm pretty sure that newborns should poo frequently (it's after a few weeks when them not pooing for a few days isn't so much of a problem).

I'd call your midwife in the morning.

turtle23 · 31/03/2008 00:20

Last night's massive poo was meconium( but has moved onto brown rather than dark) He has pooed quite a bit, but not today. Am guessing that the ormula is just moving very slowly. He doesn't seem uncomfortable.

bf babies don't poo that much, tbh. like you say, his system will just be getting itself sorted out, and as you say he's weeing plenty so he really will be fine. Breast milk is the perfect food for your baby and practically all of the nutrients from it are absorbed, so the only thing left is the excess liquid that his body has used, ie wee.
Try not to panic

VeniVidiVickiQV · 31/03/2008 16:11

Just wanted to clarify that older (than two weeks at least) b/fed babies dont poo often and it isnt a worry.

Newborn b/fed babies should poo about once a day really.

Did you speak to the MW today?

fingerwoman · 31/03/2008 20:11

hi turtle, has he pooed yet?????
I bet if he has it was explosive, seeing as your milk had come in lol

do update us and let us know all is well

turtle23 · 31/03/2008 20:11

Little man has excelled himself in the poo dept today. Think we've had 8! All back to normal and kinda wishing I hadn't prayed for poo....

Oh, yes - there'll be times when you wish you'd never see a speck of poo again

fingerwoman · 01/04/2008 19:43

oh jolly good

and, from your other thread, how are the blocked ducts?
