Unsure whether to insist DH goes to a&e

He's woken up this morning with, firstly, an upset stomach and quite severe mid-to-lower back pain which has now progressed to some fairly heavy duty vomiting. Took his temperature and it came up 34.4 which is worrying but I'm not sure how securely he had it tucked under his arm and I can't get him to take it orally as anything in his mouth is making him vomit. He feels normal-ish temp to touch although very clammy. I'm thinking kidney infection although he says he had no urinary symptoms until about an hour ago, now he's saying he constantly feels like he needs to go but nothing happens when he tries.

We're awaiting callback from 111, they said within 45 minutes but that was an hour ago, just looking for opinions on whether to keep waiting (and for how long before I call back/take him to a&e) or whether his symptoms are worrying enough that I should be taking him to hospital now. He's a terrible patient at the best of times but is in a lot of pain with his back so think he would go if I insisted.

How’s your dh doing @Janetsmug

Janetsmug · 10/04/2024 13:34

He's ok WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout, thanks for asking. They didn't actually discharge him til yesterday as they wanted to see his white cell count coming down and he still had some blood in his urine but all good now and he's feeling heaps better. They're pretty sure he did have a kidney stone and that caused an infection but the stone has now gone so we're assuming he passed it without realising, they were pumping so much fluid through him he was peeing like a racehorse so it must have flushed through.

Discharged with antibiotics and back at work today amazingly, would have preferred him to take the rest of the week off but he's self employed and wanted to get back. Hospital have given him a telling off for not drinking enough (like I haven't been telling him for years!) and he's making a real effort to drink more so hopefully it won't happen again. Thanks for everyone's advice and support, was a scary experience seeing him in that much pain.

Oh phew @Janetsmug that sounds like a huge relief.

MILTOBE · 10/04/2024 18:58

I'm really glad he's better now.

OP, have you seen the scene in Friends with the kidney stone?

Could be kidney stones. They tend to cause quite dramatic symptoms in men. (That's not meant as a dig at all).

Blueuggboots · 10/04/2024 20:35

Get me! Promise I hadn't read the thread!!!

BlondeFool · 10/04/2024 20:37

Glad he's on the mend
