Unsure whether to insist DH goes to a&e

He's woken up this morning with, firstly, an upset stomach and quite severe mid-to-lower back pain which has now progressed to some fairly heavy duty vomiting. Took his temperature and it came up 34.4 which is worrying but I'm not sure how securely he had it tucked under his arm and I can't get him to take it orally as anything in his mouth is making him vomit. He feels normal-ish temp to touch although very clammy. I'm thinking kidney infection although he says he had no urinary symptoms until about an hour ago, now he's saying he constantly feels like he needs to go but nothing happens when he tries.

We're awaiting callback from 111, they said within 45 minutes but that was an hour ago, just looking for opinions on whether to keep waiting (and for how long before I call back/take him to a&e) or whether his symptoms are worrying enough that I should be taking him to hospital now. He's a terrible patient at the best of times but is in a lot of pain with his back so think he would go if I insisted.

Dh had similar. Monster kidney stone. Hoe he’s ok.

MissyB1 · 07/04/2024 19:20

Bless him, hope he’s ok.

Louu247 · 07/04/2024 20:31

Hope he’s ok x

Loopsielou · 07/04/2024 20:47

Yep. Mine had a huge kidney stone. Was in crippling pain. Had an operation to remove it

tribpot · 07/04/2024 20:49

Best of luck, hope your wait isn't too long.

Janetsmug · 08/04/2024 03:27

They admitted him with query kidney stones/infection, got him started on some hefty antibiotics and painkillers and he's a lot more comfortable, thanks for everyone's concern. Scan tomorrow to check for stones (they don't do this particular scan at the weekend apparently) and hopefully they will have done a urine dip by now, he still hadn't managed to wee when I left but has now provided a sample, just in time to avoid a catheter thankfully! I have to say the hospital have been pretty amazing considering the current state of affairs in the NHS, not a massive wait at any stage and they're looking after him well on the ward. Thanks again for everyone's replies.

that is amazing, well done to the hospital, good luck for his prognosis and treatment.

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 08/04/2024 03:30

I’m so pleased that you got through A&E quickly. Well done for following your instincts and persuading your dh to go in. Hope you get some sleep after a stressful evening.

LostittoBostik · 08/04/2024 03:36

So glad you took him in, definitely the right place to be. Glad he was admitted swiftly. Hope you both get some sleep

ShrubRose · 08/04/2024 04:26

So pleased you acted quickly, and that DH is more comfortable and being well looked after. Hope this all resolves very soon. Thanks for letting us know, OP.

whatisforteamum · 08/04/2024 04:29

Was going to say kidney stones as I've had them.
Glad he is getting sorted out poor man.

scaredofff · 08/04/2024 04:59

Aw what a relief he is getting the care he needs. What a shame, my dp had kidney stones years before we met and he still goes on now about how bad the pain was

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 08/04/2024 09:09

Dh has kidney stones a lot. Glad he’s getting care he needs.

Janetsmug · 08/04/2024 20:40

They've decided to keep him in after all Sad The kidney team (can't remember the term, neph-something) want to see him because his white cell count is raised apparently. Apart from infection does anyone know what else that might signify? Just want to know whether I need to be preparing myself for anything more serious than kidney stones or a really nasty infection tbh, I will cope better if I know all the possible outcomes. Bit scared tonight, stayed with him as long as they would let me and feel a bit lost at home.

ShrubRose · 08/04/2024 21:23

So sorry you are going through this, OP.

I don't know of anything else that an elevated white cell count might mean; I'm not a doc but some MN responders who are health care professionals may be able to help.
If there is an infection, the meds and his own immune system will fight it off.
Try to take gentle care of yourself tonight. This kind of thing takes a big toll on the body and the spirit.
Sending good wishes to you.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 08/04/2024 23:06

I don’t know what those results mean but sending you hugs.

Janetsmug · 08/04/2024 23:08

Thanks both, trying really hard not to google so just going to have to hope it's nothing sinister 🤞

Algorhythum · 08/04/2024 23:12

Sounds like exactly the symptoms I had when I had Kidney stones. The elevated white blood cells can be caused by this too. Please try not to worry too much. Well done for not hanging around and getting him into a and e.

Nik2879 · 08/04/2024 23:14

45 mins for 111 that would be a miracle I waited 23 hours for a call back for my 2 year old. Would never waste my time again. Hope he gets sorted asap.

TurtleMoon · 08/04/2024 23:22

I think an elevated white blood cell count signals there's an infection in the body? Mine were really high when l was very unwell with what later turned out to be gall stones and a badly infected gall bladder.

scaredofff · 08/04/2024 23:47

My mum has regular blood tests for chemo treatment and twice couldn't get it when the white blood count was elevated, they said it is when her body is fighting infection

Janetsmug · 08/04/2024 23:50

He's just messaged to say the nurse in charge tonight has told him they want to do a urine culture now as well, and that the kidney team will be wanting to make sure his white cell count is coming down in response to all the antibiotics they're firing into him before they let him go so I'm a bit less worried now. That just sounds like they think he has a nasty infection and are making sure they've got on top of it doesn't it?

OP posts:
ErikaReadsTheDailyMail · 08/04/2024 23:55

I'd imagine the urine culture will be to determine the precise bacteria causing the infection, and to make sure he's on the right antibiotics for that infection.
I'm sure he'll be fine OP, though it is scary for you. Hope he's home soon x

Remo22 · 09/04/2024 00:01

@Janetsmug
Coming from an Md
Don't worry
Most people with his case resolve very well in ABs and cultures are quite routine in a suspected case of UTI (urinary tract infection)

The rare occurrence where a problem might happen is a reaction from onw of the antibiotics
Or the infection being resistant (not responding to the antibiotics well) therefore prolonging his hospitalization

Or the rarest is that it affects his kidney functions permanently (lets hope it doesn't happen)

Every person and every human body is different

But lets be hopeful and optimistic
Probably he will be well and going home without any problems within 10-14 days

Best wishes Op

Hope you're doing alright Janet 💐 he's in the best place
