Operation Recovery ...

NotQuiteCockney · 29/03/2008 12:55

I had a fairly straightforward operation on Wednesday.

I've been home since Thursday.

I've been getting better, but today I feel worse. The side of my face feels more swollen, the wound site feels itchy, and maybe infected?

I'm not on antibiotics.

I feel nauseated and hot and foggy.

Is this normal? At what point do I go to the hospital?

I'll try to dig up a thermometer, that's probably the best check for an infection ...

(And should I stop watching House? I think that may be part of the problem )

Swollen can be a sign of infection as is feeling hot. Give the hospital a ring and ask for advice

Neverenough · 29/03/2008 13:32

Contact the Out Of Hours GP-that's what the hospital will advise you to do.

NotQuiteCockney · 29/03/2008 13:36

I'll try taking my temperature. DH says my eye area doesn't look v swollen. But it is a bit more swollen than yesterday.

God I suck at being patient and waiting to get better.

Believe me nurses (or even retired nurses like me) are a whole lot worse LOL I make a terrible patient

NotQuiteCockney · 29/03/2008 14:31

I found a meat thermometer, and got an armpit temperature of 36 something, so I'm fine. Just impatient.

My eye etc doesn't look dodgy.

I just want to be well now, damnit.

I'm feeling better. Stopping watching House maybe helped. I think I just need to be patient.

Good!
Do something to take your mind off it-crosswords, esketch, sudoku?

NotQuiteCockney · 29/03/2008 22:22

I watched a crappy movie with DH. As long as repeatedly shouting 'WTF!?!?' doesn't make things worse, it's a reasonable pasttime.

what op did you have? ibuprofen is good for reducing swelling

expatinscotland · 29/03/2008 22:27

frozen peas for the swelling.

if you do use ibuprofen and you had a GA try taking them with food - ibu can be hard on the gut sometimes.

drink LOTS of water!

very normal to feel nauseated and sluggish and foggy after GA.

all my wounds itched like mad! it's apparently part of the healing process .

HATED it.

gigglewitch · 29/03/2008 22:34

can you get a few painkillers in you and sleep it off NQC? it worked for me after wisdom tooth/jaw surgery last year. Caught up on years worth of broken nights - bliss the elephant-stunning doses of codeine did the trick for me...

expatinscotland · 29/03/2008 22:46

i admit to keeping a supply of diazepam or tamazepam and co-codamol at the ready for such occassions.

NotQuiteCockney · 30/03/2008 09:33

I have cocodamol. Haven't tried sleeping through the day - probably should have, when I was more ill. I do have prescription sleeping pills, although I'm not a fan.

I was told to avoid iboprofen as it thins the blood and would make me bleed more.

I had an eye duct bypass thing. I now have a stent in my eye. Grr.

I am feeling a lot better today, though. Which is good, because I'd like to be able to wrangle the kids on my own.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 31/03/2008 08:03

Think I'm still on the mend. There's still a sore spot on my left wrist where the cannula is. And I'm working out that quite a bit of my discomfort is from the stent that will be in for the next 2 weeks. But at least I know.

I even managed a shower today. I'm managing the kids on my own today, have booked tomorrow off, then I'm doing a shift at the nursery on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday I might have off, will have at least the mornings off, I think.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 31/03/2008 08:03

Where the cannula was. God I hate cannulas.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 31/03/2008 19:52

Fuck. Ing. Hell.

I needed to be me today. I needed to do 'my' work. I walked maybe 4km if that, slowly. I took care of children, in a minimalist sort of way.

I am the most tired I have ever been, I swear. I have been stuttering since about noon, which is something I only do when tired. (DS2 has been imitating me for humour, which is a bit rich, as he has a strong toddler stutter.)

Fuck, it's infected, I'm on oral antibiotics now. It's not badly infected, anyway. But it's infected all the same. The doctor was kinda picking at it, and seemed to want to get the pus out ... ugh.

OP posts:
Kaz1967 · 01/04/2008 20:19

Is it where you cannula was that is infected? Or the other scar? what ever at least it is being treated so should sort it's self out soon

expatinscotland · 01/04/2008 20:22

NQC, I think your body is telling you you need to take it easy a bit more.

It's had a knock.

I know how hard it is - I had 4 consecutive knee surgeries at a time when I was a 25-year-old athlete.

But seriously, it's only been a week and your eye is pretty fragile in relation to some parts of your body.

Be kind to yourself.

NotQuiteCockney · 01/04/2008 21:14

It's the other scar that's infected. Not very infected, at least.

Problem is, it's a bit tricky to take it easy. I'm not running or anything (I wish!) but I have to do a shift at the nursery tomorrow. I'm trying to sort out childcare for Thursday and Friday during the day, at least. DH leaves for Amsterdam tomorrow, to Friday.

Next week I only have DS2, as DS1 will be at my ILs. I can't wait until my inlaws feel up for taking both of them!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 01/04/2008 21:16

chill out of an evening, let DH do it all.

let the folks at the nursery know you've just had an operation.

it's only been a week.

your bod needs a rest, NQC.

it'll thank you later!

NotQuiteCockney · 01/04/2008 21:16

The other scar = a cm-long cut beside my nose. It's a bit red and angry. Dunno what's up with the cannula site, the medic i saw today was the same one that stuck a fucking needle in my eye (ok, in the duct, not in my eyeball), under the pretense of "flushing out the ducts". With a probe apparently. It's not a needle. Apparently. [needlephobic]

At least she noticed the site was infected, I guess.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 01/04/2008 21:18

The folks at the nursery = me. I am lead parent. I do need to work tomorrow morning, but I'll take it easy.

(I have been taking it easy - I unloaded the boys on a random teenage babysitter. And when she smsed to say 'oh, sorry, I have a meeting at 4pm, want me to bring them back then? Or my boyf could keep them' I said 'ok, your boyf can keep them'. They came back with homemade bows and arrows.)

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 01/04/2008 21:18

Body to NQC: Heeelppp moi! Don't take me for walks just now. Let me sleep! I vant to get better!

NotQuiteCockney · 01/04/2008 21:20

I know, I know.

Annoyingly, I promised the DSes I'd go to the art supply store today, to get cardboard so we could make roman shields. So I walked a fair bit today.

Tomorrow I have to walk to the nursery and back, once (maybe 2km). And that's it. I'll try to minimise my exercise the rest of the week ... I keep thinking I'll feel well enough to bike, which is less work, right?
