I have hurt my back so badly that ex has had to take over with the kids, my house is squalid through lack of cleaning, and I can barely get dressed

Pitymme. I am in full lonely diazepam flow here .... and still in mega pain. I can't even readjust the position of my feet without wanting to cry, and I will have to go and lie down as soon as I have typed this

And tonight was supposed to be my night off the kids, but ex had them last night instead so certainly won't have them tonight, and I was supposed to be going and and that certainly won't be happening.

ooh, you have sciatica.

sciatic nerve is inflamed. it runs behind the iliac joint in your pelvis (the joints at the back, one either of your spine) and is very big as nerves go. it runs thro your bum and down the back of your legs.....that is the pain you are feeling! I am guessing it stems from your trapped nerve at the weekend.

anti-inflammitaries help lots (diclofenic works for me), as does diazapam for the immediate releif. co-dydromal helps too!

long term, pilates or chiropractic treatment help.

I suffer this ever since my two car accidents....hurts like hell at times, and others tis barely there.

SmugColditz · 01/04/2008 15:42

This hip is always a bit dicky, always has been. I am still on the diazepam and the diclofenac (or whatever volterol is called now!)

Is there any moves I can do now to sort it, or is it a wait thing, until it's calmed down?

ok....will try to explain one that my physio showed me and helps...

lie on the bed, near to the edge.....am thinking that if it is your left leg, you need to lie on the right, on your right hand side.

with you left leg, let it drop over the side of the bed towards the floor, keeping you knee bent (ie, don't swing you leg or move quickly, nor keep it straight), so your left thigh is at right angles to your right thigh.

let your leg drop towards the floor, and let your hips relax, trying to stay as much on your right side but not rigidly.

stay like it for no more than 5mins at a time.

I hope it makes sense??? It helps me, more because it stretches my pelvis slightly to releive the nerve, and also stretches the nerve slightly too!

ScoobyDoo · 01/04/2008 15:51

Defo sounds like sciatica i have this & the pain is unbearable when it really kicks in!

Have you see your doctor?

harleyd · 01/04/2008 15:53

im waiting for physio
have you been referred?

Psychomum5 · 01/04/2008 15:53

oh, and altho rest does help, not moving at all stiffens you up so some moving about is recommended.

hot water bottles can also give some relief, and also ice gel.

if you are using diclofenic (volterol for the common name) then I am not sure if you can also use the volterol gel, but check cos if you can it can give some immediate relief to the exact area.

warm bath may also help, but only if you can get in and out yourself.

harleyd · 01/04/2008 15:55

i have diclofenc diethylammonium gel
and tramadol
and anything else i can get my hands on

3littlefrogs · 01/04/2008 15:56

Are you sure you haven't slipped a disc? Has the GP examines you?

Poor you - it sounds horrendous.

Slubberdegullion · 01/04/2008 15:57

Colditz, if you are in acute pain the things you need to go are:

avoid any activities that aggravate the pain.

find positions of comfort. for classic sciatica that will be
lying on back with knees over a couple of pillows
lying on side with painful leg uppermost, pillow between knees
sitting (no longer than 20 min) with pillow/towel in small of back

use hot packs (20min)

take analgesia regularly

keep up with fluids and prunes/fruit etc as the diclofenac will make you constipated

keep moving, just gentle pottering about. no lifting/bending

avoid getting in the car or bath if possible

only exs I would advise is lying on back with knees bent up, gently roll your knees from side to side 10 time. stop if it makes the pain worse

phew

hth

Slubberdegullion · 01/04/2008 15:59

10 times for knee rolling NOT 10 min

sorry typing with 2 children on knee

Piffle · 01/04/2008 16:06

Is it leg pain down the back of your leg? If not then you could be suffering from pelvic misalignment a post natal throw back to spd.
sympathies I suffered for ages but got a damned good physio referral.
Good luck

SmugColditz · 02/04/2008 10:44

Hi, sorry I didn't get back to this, I am finding sitting at the computer quite painful so trying not to.

I am waking up in the morning quite well rested but within 2 hours I am in agony - basically the treadmill of dressing, chasing and general battling with a truculent 2 year old is knackering me! I am still taking the tablets though.
