How do you get rid of half used calpol?

Hiya, I have about 3 half full calpol bottles I need to throw out. Do I tip calpol down the sink or am I supposed to take it somewhere for proper disposal so it doesnt get into the environment/water. Thanks

Why not just keep it and use it?

They will laugh at you if you hand it into a pharmacy. It’s not a controlled drug so doesn’t need to be handed in. Throw it in the bin

They shouldn't laugh at you. I did once get told I really should be completing the course of the antibiotics I was handing in but that was sorted once I explained I'd taken one and had a severe allergic reaction

Am I the only one wondering how you end up with 3 x 1/2 bottles of Calpol ?

I’ve never had leftover calpol. My kids get sick too often. We have spare full just-in-case calpol.

MurderousCheekbones · 27/03/2024 19:21

What is 'properly' disposed of? I'm curious!

Surely it all just gets tipped into landfill somewhere along the line.

Dilbertian · 27/03/2024 19:48

Pharmacy. Don't pout it down the drain. Paracetamol accumulates in rivers etc and is toxic to plants and fish.

Rainbowshit · 27/03/2024 21:03

Pharmacies won't even take expired epipens anymore. They're not going to take your calpol.

PuppyMonkey · 27/03/2024 21:10

Another one here wondering why you don’t just finish the bottles. Confused

vanillawaffle · 27/03/2024 21:14

It's not a good idea to use the bottom unless you know for sure it has been shaken according to instructions each and every time

Brightshoe · 27/03/2024 22:04

Out of interest what does happen to it when it's disposed of "properly"? Presumably there aren't lead lined vaults of old paracetamol anywhere?

thesleepyhoglet · 27/03/2024 22:06

Drink it

JackSpaniels · 27/03/2024 22:07

Drink it
Put it in the garden - into soil.
Throw it in the bin

🤣 same here. And a nurofen too

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 27/03/2024 22:22

Off the point but I have never not finished a bottle of Calpol.

Oh good I wasn't off point haha.

Seriously we give our kids Calpol or nurofen almost every other day it seems..

I know, mine seems to be teething constantly and the amount of Calpol and nurofen syringes I own is ridiculous 😆

WetBandits · 27/03/2024 22:25

Just hand it in to a pharmacy for correct disposal. They won’t laugh at you as a pp has said Confused

Paracetamol is actually a pretty nasty drug in large quantities. If everyone tipped half a bottle of Calpol down the sink, that’s a lot of paracetamol just accumulating in rivers.

FoodieWoodie · 27/03/2024 22:26

Am I the only Mum here that really likes the taste of calpol? If I had the opportunity to have 3x half bottles of the stuff going spare, I’d be in my element!

MurderousCheekbones · 27/03/2024 22:27

Once they get to, say, age 10 or so, a bottle doesn't last that long if they're unwell and need the four doses a day. Been years since one went unfinished in this house!

I bloody love the taste of Calpol, thought I was the only one😁

Chewbecca · 27/03/2024 22:50

Yes, use it! Either for your DC or yourself. Even if 'out of date'.

I’ve found my person! Do you take a little 5mls for yourself? 😉

Unused pharmaceuticals are incinerated.

Lots of pharmacies don’t take them now - please put them in the bin and not in the water.

Just use it. These things don't suddenly go out of date, the law just obliges manufacturers to come up with some future date to put on the packet. Even if it does, it simply won't be effective. It's not going to kill anyone.
