Bleed on the Brain - help or advise

Anyone got any experiences or knowledge of a bleed on the brain?
I firstly thought I had a sinus infection, but after 2 lots of anti bi's it is no better. I have been given some more today but gp said if no improvement then an urgent appointment with neurologist.
I am so scared and have looked on the web for symptoms etc and they are similar to a bleed on the brain. However, I may be reading too much into it.

My symptoms started with pain in the neck.
I also have constant headache and a lot of the time they are chronic. When i have the headache I sometimes vomit and always have a pain right behind one eyeball.

Does anyone have any knowledge that could put my mind at rest?

I get terrible headaches/migraines when my neck is out and my osteopath always sorts it out. I also get nausea with it and she told me that the vagus nerve that serves the stomach can be compressed if the neck if out.

Did the doctor tell you that you have a bleed on the brain? In my limited knowlege, isn't this a stroke?

droopytits · 27/03/2008 20:04

They didnt say it was - they said that if i dont have any improvement in a few days i must go urgently, or if it gets any worse go straightaway etc.

I do suffer from migraines too, but this is different - the pain in my neck is very rare now, but the headaches are constant and have been for over 2 weeks.

I am probably worrying over nothing, but i am so scared.

I havent got any snot and i'm not bunged up which makes me think it may not be sinus related. The pain behind my eye worries me too.

Have you had your eyes tested recently. An optician would examine the health of the back of your eyes, droopy.

droopytits · 27/03/2008 20:07

Yes I have had them tested only a short while ago - just have slight short sightedness but no problems other than that

misdee · 27/03/2008 20:09

never ever google symptoms.

droopytits · 27/03/2008 20:31

i know misdee I shouldn't have done it - i've scared myself sh*tless!

dh has had a bleed on the brain. his eyesight went in one eye.

sounds to me like it could be migraine/cluster headaches? i'm no doctors but the pain in eyes and vomiting is how i get with a migraine.

also are you under a lot of stress?

pickie · 27/03/2008 20:46

If they suspect a bleed on the brain they would have sent you in straight away or even called for an ambulance on the spot I think

When I read your post I thought maybe a whiplash as I had all those symptoms and as Detta mentioned a osteopath is great for that!

DH had bleed on the brain but think depends where the bleed is as symptoms vary as to where it is. He had none of your symptoms if that helps

droopytits · 27/03/2008 20:48

oh phew thank you misdee and pickie.

I'm not convinced about the migraine/cluster headaches though - i do get migraines, but this is different - and for so long?

What were your dh's symptoms pickie if you dont mind me asking you?

It really sounds like cluster headaches to me, they are an incredibly painful boring pain usually on one side of your head and deep in your eye. They can be accompanied by a stuffy or runny nose and I'm sure the intense pain could cause vomiting!

www.emedicinehealth.com/cluster_headache/article_em.htm

HereComeTheGirls · 27/03/2008 20:51

...and the attacks can come several times a day for weeks at a time, in a cluster.

pickie · 27/03/2008 20:53

He was kept asleep for the 1st 7 days but when he woke up he was fine at first sight but he is still coming to terms with impact of the bleed on the brain

Symptoms that spring straight to my mind are very forgetful, short tempered, cannot handle stress situations, seems to have lost quite a bit of vocab and is sometimes lost for words but lots of little things that make you the person who you are IYSWIM

droopytits · 27/03/2008 20:57

oh pickie it sounds awful. How did you know it had happened - did he collapse or have a siezure?

I do hope he is recovering from it now - must have been terrible for you both.

I'll check out the cluster headache link thanks herecomethegirls

Actually on rereading it sounds more like a series of migraines. But I don't really know that much about it so will shut up However I don't think a bleed on the brain would cause just pain for two weeks.

pickie · 27/03/2008 21:00

Yes it was awfull but very surreal. He fell 10 metres on a concrete slab and had loads of injuries hence they kept him asleep for 7 days (ITU). Very very lucky to be alive

They say most recovery is done within the first 2 years which was 4 months ago but we'll see, he is a very postive person (and so am I)

droopytits · 27/03/2008 21:02

dont you? oh thank you thank you. I know i am being stupid really but wanted a realistic view on what it could be.
When you have been in pain for this long in your head you really do thing the worst, and then the doc suggested an urgent hospital appt if no improvement and it really frightened me.

HereComeTheGirls · 27/03/2008 21:03

Urgent on the NHS just means you don't have to wait a year these days I'm sure he just wants to help you get rid of your pain as soon as possible ~hugs~

droopytits · 27/03/2008 21:09

the doctor actually called another doctor in too as they are a bit baffled about it all and concerned its lasting so long and not responding to the anit-bi's

I had it that bad with my sinuses too. My Gp wanted to rule out a brain tumour, as the pain was so bad it felt like my eyeballs were going to pop out of my head, my entire bone structure in the face was hurting so bad. I had a CT scan, it came up ok.

But we discovered that tooth problem I told you about on another thread on a routine visit to the dentist and an xray (I had no tootache prior to this), basically, I needed a rootcanal (cost a fortune down near harley street) with a specialist, as the root was rotten and twisted, and it turned out that infection was seeping into my sinuses, as an xray showed that the root of my tooth was growing directly into the sinus. This meant that the infection spread from my tooth, into the sinuses of the cheek, and further up to behind my eyes. Also, the fact that the tootache was so bad, made my entire face ache.

I know you said you had been to the dentist and all was fine. My point is rather it doesnt have to be the worst. Let the docs figure it out, and i am sure they will find some explanation that does not involve neither bleeding on the brain nor brain tumours.

Good Luck!

HereComeTheGirls · 27/03/2008 21:12

Definitely if they thought it was a bleed on the brain you would have been sent straight to hospital. So that's two doctors who haven't thought that, which should reassure you

HereComeTheGirls · 27/03/2008 21:13

You could also ask the GP why he wanted an urgent appointment and tell him that hearing that scared you, I'm sure he will reassure you!

madcol · 27/03/2008 21:20

Brain bleed is v.unlikely unless you have some predisposing risk factors e.g.
severe high blood pressure

family history of brain bleeds or kidney disease

Recent history of head injury

More likely are migraine- related syndromes - can normally be treated with imigran and the like.

If you have chronic headache associated with vomiting you may be referred for a CT scan and neurology opinion just to be sure that there is nothing else underlying it.

Time to visit A+E if :

Worst ever headache imaginable
Neck Stiffness
Blurry/disturbed vision
Difficulty looking at light
Rash
Weakness in limbs

This can still be migraine but other things need to exlcuded asap in such an instance

Hope this helps

droopytits · 27/03/2008 21:27

thanks madcol. I did start with neck stiffness but that seems to have eased now.

I could ask the gp why he said that, but think i know anyway - its because they dont know why the pain hasnt yet gone and although they thought it could be sinus, idont have classic symptoms.

OP posts:
madcol · 27/03/2008 21:32

Problem is worrying likely to make it worse. personally I would bite the bullet and ask for a referral. That way the more serious things can be easily excluded and the worrying at least can stop.

A neurologist will probably listen to your symptoms possibly ask for a scan and come up with a diagnosis.

Are you using painkillers?

droopytits · 27/03/2008 21:48

i have tried every painkiller possible - they gave me tramadol last week and cant believe they are not working either.
